Chrono Trigger loaded onto Japanese Virtual Console

Nintendo confirms Square's venerated action RPG will be ported to Wii's online store next month; US release unknown.

Nintendo has been updating the Wii's Virtual Console with classics--and sometimes, "classics"--from gaming systems gone by since the system launched in November 2006. However, though its pool of oft-requested games is dwindling, the publisher still has a few aces remaining.

Today, Nintendo announced that Japanese gamers will be able to download Square's acclaimed Chrono Trigger in April. The game will set players back 900 Wii points ($9), a 100 Wii point premium over other SNES-era titles.

Chrono Trigger on the DS proved the series has passed the test of time.

Chrono Trigger presents the story of Crono, who attempts to save his friend Marle from a malfunctioning teleportation device. However, a more sinister threat evolves through his adventures, and Crono soon finds himself altering space-time to divert the near-certain apocalyptic future.

Rather than traditional random-encounter battles, Chrono Trigger features visible enemies and an active battle system, where players have a personal countdown timer that measures the frequency of attacks. Seen as revolutionary at the time, the game also includes multiple ending sequences.

Chrono Trigger is one of just three releases scheduled for Japan's Virtual Console in April. The publisher also plans to release Mega Man X, which has itself been the subject of critical acclaim, as well as King of the Monsters 2.

Nintendo did not indicate whether Chrono Trigger would arrive on Virtual Consoles outside of Japan and had not responded to a request for comment as of press time. For more on the game, check out video of the 2008 DS rerelease below.

Wish the US could get something cool like that

I was hoping this would be a launch VC game for the Wii here in the US. Maybe the Wii HD will get it?

Agreed- compare chrono trigger to the "sequel" chrono cross. Can't understand why they got so rubbish. Hope they don't mess up Deus Ex.

@evilmaster2424 agreed! though, Square don't make games nowadays nowhere near as good as they used to :(

And it's about time too. I own the game on the Super NES and PlayStation already, so I probably won't download it, but if it's also put on the worldwide VC it'll allow new gamers to experience the masterpiece that it is. With the industry today like it is - where graphics are pushed as the most important factor - games such as Chrono Trigger will never be made again.

@alkaline_DnB: Nintendo don't own Chrono Trigger. Square own all the rights to Chrono Trigger, and the reason they never allowed Nintendo to put it on the VC before is because they put it on the DS instead. But the DS version flopped comapred to their own expectations, and that's probably why it's getting put on the VC.

this isn't even exciting, as this should have been done years ago. not only that, but I've been emulating this on my pc for the past 9 years and it takes nintendo, who owns the game, this long to port it. btw, it only says japanese vc, no indications of a US release...what a joke.

@phoenix729 It's crazy the things phones can do now. It all came about so fast it seems to. They even have PSone games running now, I was playing Final fantasy tactics a few months ago. Im just never in a place where this stuff becomes useful to play really. Either I'm with friends or I'm at work and I have a PC here that I can use for whatever I want.

They need to stop drip feeding us these great games. Release FF6 an Chrono Trigger at once! On top of that quit pretending square soft is still alive, Enix-Square. You're a sad shadow of a great company. Square soft's website was the first website I ever visited when I first used the internet.

We need info on Virtual Console, 3DSware, browser, system swap, all this stuff now. It should have been out by launch day and its frustrating having it on my system telling me it will be included "in the future"

There are actually several fan made projects that are still ongoing.

They were making a 3D remake of this game, but square enix threatened to take the creators to court. I had a few videos of it, it was amazingly well made. They shoulda hired the people instead IMO, and released the game, they coulda sold it for 50 bucks on the Wii

Rayzakk

@dark_surge If I remember right some fans attempted to make a sequel using the original's game engine called Crimson Echoes but I really don't know what came of it. I think they were hit with a cease and desist order like the people behind Chrono Resurrection.

dark_surge
dark_surge

What is this unofficial sequel you speak of, Rayzakk? :) I've heard of the discontinued (against their will) 3D remake, Chrono Resurrection, but I have never heard anything about a fan sequel. Sounds really interesting!

They should of done this before they released the DS version imo.

While companies like capcom are making games like megaman for xbox live, why can't companies like SE make final fantasy games for PSN or XBL? I know the after years may not have exactly been well recieved who wants to buy a game where you have to buy it in chapters and wait and wait for each release? Why then stop people from making sequels to Chronotrigger if you aren't going to follow it up yourself? I really don't understand developers mentality. They tell us what we want rather than listening to what we would really like to see.

barnold81
barnold81

They need to release FFVI (FF3 on SNES, USA) and then they will have released everything substantial. I was excited for FF Mystic Quest. That game is very nostalgic for me.

@Frostnut I agree. I feel like the story, character development, and environments of the games today can't compare to what they used to be. Now it's all about graphics...which sucks.

Poodger

VC is a joke, the games on it are incredibly overpriced. All the games on it need to be reduced by 50%.

@Rayzakk You should try and search an english version of Bahamut Lagoon,I have one and I also have Secret of Mana 2 (english version) both games are very good even if the graphics are old school.Still, they dont make games this good today.

Rayzakk
Rayzakk

I hated FF13. I want to control my entire party, I don't want the game to have any autobattle. That makes it like i'm playing Xenosaga and watching on of those 2 hour cutscenes where theres nothing to do. Secret of Mana was awesome and it's a shame it's sequel didn't make it to the US and I find it really hard to play games on emulators because I like to lay back and play which is the opposite direction gaming is going with motion controls. Square had a lot of games that didn't make it to the US that I would've liked to have played but didn't get to like Bahamut Lagoon and The Creation of Heaven and Earth.

Giga_Surfer
Giga_Surfer

@Rayzakk Dam Secret of Mana was pretty awesome, i had forgot all these great RPG, I guess i shouldn't have sold all my psx games =(. Now i want to play them again. The best years of gaming where the 80s and the 90s, when the gaming industry didn't care so much about profit, more about making good games.

@Rayzakk: And the sad thing is, neither Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey were SE games. It almost makes you wonder if Enix took over creative control, and Sakaguchi was the real genius behind Square until his departure. I can't even play FF games anymore. I had to force myself to play 13, but it was so dumbed down and boring, I couldn't finish it.

Rayzakk
Rayzakk

JRPG's used to be great. SE has never been great. After the merger of Square and Enix neither have released anything I would consider equal in quality of their previous releases. I konw some will throw out some title they believe shows they are still great. When you hold up the old Square titles such as FF4, FF6, FF7, FF8, Chronotrigger, Parasite Eve, and Secret of Mana, then compare them to more recent offerings there's it's very sad. JRPG's have just been sad for the past few years with no truely epic offerings from other companies. Blue Dragon and Lost Oddessey were both great, but were years ago themselves. Other series such as AR Tonelico and the Atelier games while ok lack those epic feel and quality that those older games had. I had hope with American RPG's like Dragon Age but that was quickly dumbed down like Mass Effect because we wouldn't want the masses to be turned off by somethings that might make them think. We'll just throw in some story branches and sex scenes after you've chosen which character you want to settle on and leveling and voila you have a game.

Giga_Surfer
Giga_Surfer

@dark_surge Well or you can play it on the PC using a PSX emulator, any pc can run a psx game now a days, and before someone says its illegal, no its not, emulators are legal. Also sounds funny, but psx emulator are much more reliable then the ps2 and ps3 backwards compatibility.

dark_surge
dark_surge

I hear ya, Giga_Surfer. :) I never got around to it until the PS2 era though because of all the other great PS1 RPGs and consequently I was unable to finish it because of some glitch that only happened while playing it on the PS2 that made the game freeze right after beating a boss in some cavern right before the end of one of the discs (I think that's when it happened...it's been a long time). This makes me want to play it again. Does anybody know if that glitch still happens on the PS3? I'm really sorry for being off topic..it's just that Legend of Dragoon was such a good game (from what I played of it). :)

Giga_Surfer
Giga_Surfer

@qUaRaNt1n3 Dude Legend Of Dragoon, was epic, dam now i want a remake of it to =(, its sad they never mad a second one. Even tho it didn't got a high score, i still think it was an awesome rpg.

dark_surge
dark_surge

If it's released here there's a good chance that it'll be the last Chrono Trigger release we will see for a long time as companies, Square especially, usually only release games to the VC once all compilations, re-releases, and remakes planned for that particular game have made it out the door (or e-door). Really though, the more exposure of Chrono Trigger Square gives the newer generations the better. It's always a shame when a good game, movie, or band is forgotten. :)

UnsaidWarning

There's a reason the game is still making headlines after all of these years. Incredibly moving RPG, something that SE no longer makes and instead decides to focus on graphics and characters I wish would die just to enhance the story somewhat.

magusat999

This is one of those games that they MUST continue to make available - I don't know why it wasn't there when they first opened the VC. Oh and while their at it, why not add Final Fantasy III?

Square is finally letting more of their games hit the download scene. Vagrant Story just hit the PSN too. It's amazing how much better Square was in the 16-32 bit era.
