Check out this beautiful next-gen tech demo from the makers of Bravely Default

Silicon Studio releases jaw-dropping tech demo to show off its proprietary middleware.

Bravely Default developer Silicon Studio has released a new rendering engine tech demo video and it, coupled with a serene soundtrack, is absolutely stunning.

The "next-gen" video shows off a "real time technical demo preview" wherein we see some impressive lighting systems and staggering visuals of a robot putting together a piece of technology.

In addition to developing games like Bravely Default, Silicon Studio is the creator of middleware like the YEBIS 2 post processing tech. This graphics tech has been been used in games like Ubisoft's Xbox One game Fighter Within and Square Enix's staggering Agni's Philosophy demo.

Wish they would release non-interactive demos that could be rendered live on our machines. Otherwise it's beginning to be hard to beleive it is being rendered live

Looks like pc graphics from 2012. Whats next gen in this ?

It's funny how tech demos always look 10x better than the games made on it.

Impressive work SS I especially love the lighting and the use of Depth of field in this demo. Still disappointed though that not many games employ this technique effectively in game-wise.

I'm still waiting for the killzone 2 tech demo graphics to be fully utilized in games while running in 1080p and 60 fps.

Hmmm.... Ok that was impressive.  I'm impressed.

Hm....

Final Fantasy XIII trilogy looked "absolutely stunning" too - look how that turned out....

It looks photoreal. This is running on their real time game engine? What platform? If I were to guess it would probably be PC. But how would it look on PS4/XB1? Square doesn't normally make PC games, and since the consoles are much weaker than a PC, I have doubts they will be able to render something looking this good.

Ofcourse the rendering goes smooth if it's one tiny object.

am reading the comment section and can't believe that people just can't relax and enjoy a show.

Will we see games with this kind of graphics playing on our 400-1500$ machines in the next 3 years? Probably no. But in 3.5 years there is a chance that some crazy mofo studio will make a fps game or the next thief game or skyrim game or FF game with something similar + with VR + without crippling the gameplay.

Relax and enjoy the show and the bright future of gaming that will slowly come.

well look like this last next gen because looks too real so means that ps4,xbox1 in its last gen and pc.

I seriously couldn't tell that was all rendered.  Very impressive!

What a bunch of ungrateful jerks you guys are! When the PS4 was first seen, you were all like 'boring! this isn't much of a next-gen jump to me!' Now that you have something so powerful and beautiful that it looks fake, and now we're getting 'I care more about gameplay! I don't care how good the art is!' (sigh) Nice to know you guys care how hard the artists worked on this.

I really enjoy watching gorgeous graphic details, like in final fantasy XIII and others, but still, focus more on the creative area of the game like the history and gameplay, those two "details" are the ones that really matter, this is pretty, but just that.

What's with Square Enix making so many damn tech demos...?  They should really focus on the games...  they make good to great ones already, but without all this extra fluff draining their resources they could go a lot further me thinks.

It looks great but I'm not all that impressed.  This is like watching CGI.  Show me something with this kind of graphical fidelity within actual gameplay and then I'll be impressed.

poksmote

nothing great about this only time things look good in a game is when its a cut scene then you get to the gameplay and it looks like shit again

Not very impressive. They layered on heavy depth of field, glowy lighting, and only did decent work on the camera. If you look at the environment itself it's extremely sterile and the textures are pretty simple. Current games can already look like this, not very next gen at all.

neowarrior121
neowarrior121

if they shows just that camera part at the end to an audience i don't think you could tell that its not real life, i want my games to be more graphical and such but within reason to gameplay. i dont want more killzones or reyes's which look amazing but has terrible gameplay, same with final fantasy 13 games graphically they are good but the story and gameplay for all of them sux, its a clear indication square enix sold out storyline and gameplay for a good looking game and it backfired, there still more people who would rather play ff 7 9 or 10 over it.

Very impressive. I love how you can actually see how different the materials are and see that age and patina in them. The little small and intricate details is what I love.

@PodXCOM  im more concerned about the money we will pay in the final product, and how much they lied to us about these graphics

Coco_pierrot
Coco_pierrot

@PodXCOM I would prefer more work on making the games run smoother than having photo realistic graphics ... anyway Square isn't able to make a Final Fantasy game without serious frame rate issue... so more power dedicated to graphics less there is to make it run smoother.

It sure is impressive and all but it is that impressive, until we see that kind of graphics in real time in a game without frame rate issue I'll stay unconvinced.

Also bravely default isn't a graphics juggernault but the game is smooth and fun, which is a big problem right now for too many games

Coco_pierrot
Coco_pierrot

@Dustshadow7 especially when none of the FF XIII games are "frame-rate issue free"; I don't know if it is my PS3 but those games always have issue where there is too many NPCs.

@nl_skipper @jinzo9988What does your reply have to do with my comment?  I'm not interested in OMG GRAFFIX tech demos if they're done in a cutscene or an FMV or something like that.  It doesn't mean anything.  Put that within the context of gameplay however and that's what will impress me.

It's like building a car engine that has 50,000 horsepower.  That's great and all but if you can't stick it in a driveable car then what's the point?

Expopower
Expopower

@nl_skipper @ShimmeringSwordI wouldn't say for no reason, per se. Realistic depth of field blur can be an extremely expensive operation for a renderer to perform, and showing it being done in real time might have been a deliberate part of the tech demo.

That said, I did find it a bit heavy too.
