When Take-Two Interactive announced it was bringing Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories to the PlayStation 2, many were skeptical. After all, the game would be the first title ever to be ported to a console from the PlayStation Portable. Furthermore, its stock plot and reuse of Grand Theft Auto III's setting had been cited as sore points by critics.
Sure enough, reviewers weren't exactly thrilled with the PS2 LCS. But the current GTA drought and the game's $20 price tag overcame the lukewarm press, making the game the second-bestselling title of June 2006, according to sales-volume rankings from NPD Funworld. It was just one of 12 PS2 games in the June top 20 and was joined by its sibling Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which parked itself in 18th place.
But while Liberty City Stories came close to the top, the number-one slot remained in Nintendo's hands. For the second month in a row, New Super Mario Bros. was the top non-PC game in the land, further demonstrating the success of the Nintendo DS. The portable's popularity was underlined by the fact that the number-three game, Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, also has not fallen in the rankings since May.
The top Xbox 360 game for June was Hitman: Blood Money, debuting in fifth place. It led the trio of next-gen games on the top 20, which also included Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (16th) and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (20th). No original Xbox games cracked the top 20 in June.
Meanwhile, in the PC top 20, another newcomer also nearly took the top slot, with Half-Life 2: Episode One taking the silver. The second-place finish was even more impressive given the fact that the NPD rankings are based only on volume of boxed copies sold at retail and don't count Valve Software's direct online sales of the game via its Steam download service.
However, the top PC prize belonged to Blizzard Entertainment and Vivendi Games' megapopular massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft. A fixture on the chart since its fall 2004 release, it joined a series of returnees in the top 20, such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (seventh) and last month's top finisher, Guild Wars Factions. Naturally, the Sims franchise was well represented, taking the third (The Sims 2: Family Fun Stuff), fifth (The Sims 2: Open for Business), and sixth (The Sims 2) slots.

I think the 360 would do better if the games were priced the same as their pc counterparts. The pc versions are mostly better provided you have a decent system and here in the UK are 20 pounds cheaper than 360 games. They say it costs more to make games for this new generation, then why can the pc games still be 20 pounds cheaper?! Am I paying 20 pounds extra for gamer achievements? Psp games are also dearer than DS games and surely the DS is trickier to program what with the touch screen and stuff yet they can sell for less. Sony and Microsoft are taking the piss. Hopefully the Wii will still have normal priced games other wise we really need to start worrying about the next next generation when we're paying 80 bucks for a game and 800 bucks for the console.
New Super Mario Twins rules. And Cars sells well b/c it's a liscensed game based on a very popular kids' movie. Trust me, Shrek 2 sold a bundle as well. Oh, and Caleb1dunn, Microsoft is not entering the handheld market and if you look at the buzz, it's looking like the Wii is going to sell well. Very, very well. Just b/c you forgot your roots or you're too young to remember the NES days, doesn't mean the rest of us are.
Why are so many people buying cars????
LOL gta-lcs for $20 on ps2...... sony always finds a way to own their customers. guess all you casual psp owners that got the rehash the first time around wasted some cash.
why aren't game bought online counted? Thats just stupied as there are heaps of games sold online now.
actually Cars is a great game, not groundbreaking but its fun while it last, beause i played the demo and it was fu, but no way am thinking about buying it, and the Gamecube is still kicks butt, but what happened to the PSP LOL.
konel01 there are 2 out of the top 10 published my microsoft on the original xnox. Soon enough there will be many great games published by microsoft for the 360 (mass effect, alan wake, gears of war, halo 3.) So the fact that they don't have alot of first party games out currently doesn't mean they are doomed any more then other consoles without good third party support. And as you said about the xbox scratching the surface of the asian market. THat is completely true.....but they are a region of all fanboys, and with national "pride". Meaning they don't want to buy other countries consoles. It's not like that many games come out for the PS that dont come out on XB. And nintendo is always made great games and always will.....that IS why their system sells. I am completely with you on that one.
That's just because oblivion is old now... as you can see it was 4 last month... and not to mention that lcs is $20, of course it's going to sell well. It doesn't even say how much money they made. PS2 is not owning. Wait until the ps3 to see how bad sony is going to lose.
come on enoslives7 of coarse ps2 games are going to sell more than the comp. not because its better but because millions of more systems are in consumers homes than any other system except maybe nintendo handhelds. come on get a brain!
PS2 is still owning the competition !
konel01 knows whats up. Thanks for breaking it down.
The Xbox360 should rule next month!:D
Just because you cant cap someone in the head doesnt make Cars bad...
come on 360!!,lol
The DS and PS2 are taking the Top spots in sales World Wide. Something that XboxFanboys will "Never Ever See". Even You fanboys have to Admit the 360 has no chance of scratching the Asian Market. (imo where the best game are made) Nintendo does well becuz they Make Great Games! The DS isn't the Strongest, Most Power HandHeld Ever... Mario Sells, Not just becuz he's a Recognizable Character. It's sells becuz the Mario Games are Fun as Hell to play. Sony has great 3rd Party Support. Sony doesn't really make many their Top Selling games. They Rely on other Companies to make them. The same goes for Microsoft. They Make Powerful Systems and don't really concentrate on their games. Hell I love my PS2, but all the games I loved on it are Made by Capcom, Konami, or Square. Look at What is Selling in the Top 10! - Nintendo with 5 of the spots. 3 - DS, 1 - GBA, 1 - GC - Sony with 4 in the top 10. 4 - PS2, 0 - PSP - Microsoft with Only 1 360 title and Zero Xbox games. LOOK at WHO Publishes the Top selling games for Each Top System!! - 8 of the 10 ten games for the DS are made BY Nintendo. - Sony made 2 of their top 10 sellers this month. - Microsoft.... if they didn't have 3rd party Support, well..... Then WHO do you think is getting the biggest part of the Pie?... This will conclude our LOGIC TEST for this month. Tone in next month to the Same Video Game Site for another Episode.
thats pretty awsome that cars is doing so well
gta can never be let down to consumers...
why is Cars everywhere in the lists
i don't agree with car ... i think we need more xbox360 game need more games few comeingout .... hopeful it wil get better for xbox
Summer game drout is on.
o
screw cars man....that movie sucked total ass. it sucks that nintendo is gonna win the console wars just cuz all the little kids are gonna be banging their heads on the floor for lame ass disney movie games. im still gonna buy the real consoles. whatevers more expensive will hopefully have less little kids playing online so im sticking with a PS3
Three cheers for Cars!
Oh yeah sony are in big trouble...just look at that list 12/20 of the games are on PS2.

Wow there not one psp game on the ALL CONSOLES list.
Cars is actually kind of a good game. Well, it's nice to see Nintendo doing well with the DS and Sony doing well with the PS2 but the PSP and GBA are doing horribly for some reason.
i knew alot of people would be mad at me for saying that. but it is true. nintendo has always done good in the handheld market. that hasnt changed. they are not doing any better in that market and now they have to share it with sony and most likely ms soon. And i dont see the wii taking off near as far as the 360 or the ps3 cause it is weak and offers nothing new as far as next generation. Except for new control which sony also has. if you look at what nintendo does best it is make games those charts show that and i think that is what they should stick to doing.
Wow, look at all those movie-based games. You can tell it's the summer, haha!
the PC chart is very interesting!!
pwnr, I don't own WoW and don't want it either.
PSP is weak
i agree jpfounder the psp is like WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH
Cars is almost a mark of death! I say almost because i just can't imagine xbox2 being #1 in the end... And yes, i do cry myself to sleep because of my guilt for neglecting my Gamecube. (it's all Steam's fault damnit!)
I am surprised that no one has stated the reason the DS is all over the June charts is because the DS Lite came out on June 11. Many got a DS and 2-3 games for under $200 (including me.) July the 360 will have the #1 or #2 game.
The reason there is so much games is because it is verry popular and they never fail to impress people -Hopperman Grass no its because they make them cheaply so few sales equals greater profit. C'mon, those sports games are super simple with a few gimicks/catchy gameplay features. Supermario tennis - simple with shiny charge up, fun, easy to make, +$$
ds- nintendo still rules the handheld market psp- is doomed ps2- doin good as usual but will die soon gamecube- dead for the past 2 years xbox- slowly dieing but halo still keepin it somewhat alive 360- oblivion and GRAW givin it 360. fall 06 is when the 360 takes off and will be the #1 console pc- pc are very slowly declining till consoles are far superior (the pc will always be there though) ps3- way 2 expensive (will be third) wiiiiiiiiii- will be second console 2 the 360 and the somewhat rare ps3 owner (the name is still retard and when i get mine i will call it the revolution)
Sony rocks..
I'm glad to see nintendo doing so well, but I'm VERY disapointed that the PSP is doing so poorly, I just bought one and I love it, must be the game drought, I hope things improve this fall.
nintendo and sony is number 1
the xbox is dead and the xbox 360 is about to die. just the list i like to see, more Nintendo and SONY games than xbox games. fills my heart with warmth, lmao
Caleb1dunn. most of the people who would buy an Xbox portable are PSP owners, so if anything, it would cripple the PSP many times more.
Caleb1dunn I hope you do realize that you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about
What? Cars? People sure like games from Disney Movies.
Who said Microsoft was making a portable GAMING machine? It is only a competitor with the iPod. It's not for games as far as I know. I'd like to know the sales volume for each of these titles. I don't understand the success of Liberty City Stories. Isn't anyone else sick of GTA? I have Vice City and San Andreas, but I've only completed GTA 3. (100%) I'm just bored with it. But then again, wtf is Cars doing on this list?
[This message was deleted at the request of a moderator or administrator]
Nothing new, DS is getting more popular, PS2 is still strong, Xbox 360, getting there, Xbox dead, and the GC well yeah its dead too.
damn nintendo and sony are owning!!!!!!!!!! ps2 is still selling strong.
The PS2 is still up and kicking, the Xbox is dying, the Xbox 360 is on the rise, the Gamecube is still existent, and the DS is fresh and popular. Hooray for the PS2!!!!!
