ChartSpot: July 2006

NCAA Football 07 sacks the console competition as World of Warcraft lords over the PC charts...again.

Electronic Arts' cornering of the college-football-game market almost certainly didn't come cheap. However, it appears to be paying off dividends, since NCAA Football 07 was the game to have in July 2006, according to volume-sales rankings from the NPD Group. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions of the collegiate-pigskin sim were the most and second-most popular games in the US during the month, with the Xbox version coming in fifth.

NCAA Football 07's success pushed down June top-slotter New Super Mario Bros. for the DS to third. The month's previous runner-up, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PS2, took fourth, two slots ahead of June's number-four finisher, the PS2 edition of Cars.

The Game Boy Advance edition of Cars helped Nintendo's venerable handheld stay on the non-PC game chart at ninth. Besides New Super Mario Bros., the Mario Factory's new handheld, the DS, was represented in the top 20 via Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (seventh) and Big Brain Academy (eighth). Nintendo's current-generation console also stayed on the charts via Cars for the GameCube.

Other than NCAA, July's NPD console top 20 saw several debuts, the majority of them on the Xbox 360. Sega's Chromehounds premiered in 10th, followed directly by Electronic Arts' Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II--the first real-time strategy game for the next-gen machine. In 14th place was 2K Games' much-awaited Prey, which sold decently despite tepid reviews. The other three non-NCAA newcomers were all for the PS2: Naruto: Ultimate Ninja arrived in 13th place, followed by a resurgent Star Wars: Battlefront II (15th) and Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix (20th).

Meanwhile, back at the PC ranch, the song remained largely the same. World of Warcraft was the top title again, followed by the popular film-based minigame comp Cars Radiator Springs Adventures. EA sent in the Sims, thanks to The Sims 2 Family Fun Stuff (third), The Sims 2 (fourth), and The Sims 2: Open for Business (fifth).

The PC top 20 saw only two true newcomers, THQ action-RPG Titan Quest, which hit stores at the end of June, and the expansion pack Civilization IV: Warlords, which went on sale late in July. The month also saw two games reenter the charts: The Sims Complete Collection (16th) and Lord of the Rings: Battle For Middle Earth II (20th).

Interestingly enough, this month's issue of Nintendo Power listed "Cars" at number 1 on the GBA and GameCube charts, but not on the DS charts. It's appears that next month's issue will be the same as this month's.

ok, now, anyone who ius saying the Gamecube is dead is an idiot, its still living thanks to Cars, and i can't bellieve that NSMB is No. 3, is was number 1 every week in july, i guess Americans love American Football more than Mario, but its funny that i played it once and it was boring.

Wow Looks like football may win out two months in a roll madden 07 should be the killer game for august can wait to see the next months listing.

I got really surprised how well chromehounds did, but then I suspected since I "saw" lots of people on Live playing it. Not my type, but nice, nevertheless to see something different on the tops.

Or the better question: why do people keep asking why sports games are so popular? Have you been around the last 20 years? Do you live on the planet Earth? If 'yes' to both, you should know the answer: Because humans obsess over professional sports, whether flesh-based or virtual. This is why EA can toy around with notions like, "Hmm, should we buy Crytek today or next month?" The world loves sports. Even EA Sports.

NCAA not good? Neither is Madden.

nice chrome hounds is in the top ten

lgoldberg, you say "The PS2 is still more popular than the 360" like it's a surprise - why? The PS2 has been around for over 5 years and sold over 100 million units worldwide. More people own a PS2 than anything else, meaning PS2 games have a far bigger market to compete in. The 360 has been around for just nine months and only been widely available for about four months. So for a 360 game to be runner up to a PS2 game is a great achievement and actually proves how popular the 360 has become in such a short space of time.

Cars better not be there next month!!!

dont like's real boring...anynew more better games coming up??

Glad to see NCAA up there. We all know college football is the best there is.

NCAA Football 07....isn't very good

Ps2 games sells most because peopel mostly own ps2s. I had a survey at my campus and found out that out the people who owned a console(excluding handhelds and pcs....everyone has a pc)26 percent of the people had a ps2 only, 7 percent had and xbox only, 3 percent of the people had a gamecube only, and the rest had other mixes of consoles. BTW no one had a 360 only, but 13 percent of the people who owned consoles owned a 360. BTW this survey only taked account of 6th generation home consoles and the 7th generations ones that are out(Gamecube, Playstation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360).

lord of the rings did good thats good it was first decent rts on console

Wish they had numbers to see how many were sold ...

Why are American football games that popular? It's quite remarkable.

Football? I guess NCAA is pretty fun but watch out, MADDEN BABY! Don't really care, waiting for the real games to come out in November.

yeah, PS2 will probably be the most popular system for a very long time...not nessessarily most popular actually, as just the system the most people have...that's a very important defning factor..

cars is actually a pretty good racing! guitar hero is still in the charts though! that's really good!

WHAT is so great about football and Cars? Also I noticed that the most popular game according to the first chart is a PS2 game. I guess PS2 is still more popular than Xbox 360.

holy cow !!!!! Cars made just about every systems list
