ChartSpot: January 2007

Twilight Princess, New Super Mario Bros., and an even better-selling Lost Planet started the new year with a bang; Burning Crusade sales top 1.4 million in two weeks.

by

Last month, NPD Funworld released figures showing that Lost Planet had sold an impressive 329,000 copies. As it turns out, that figure was only the regular edition of the game. Combined with sales of the collector's edition, the well-reviewed Capcom shooter moved more than 408,000 units from January 12-31, making it the month's undisputed top non-PC title.

Also doing well in January was The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. When combined, the Wii edition, which finished fifth for the month, and GameCube version (sixth) sold more than 332,000 copies. Other big January finishers were Guitar Hero II (PlayStation 2, 270,000 copies), Gears of War (Xbox 360, 220,700 copies), WarioWare: Smooth Moves (Wii, 201,000 copies), and Resistance: Fall of Man (PlayStation 3, 143,500 copies).

On the portable front, the month's top game was the seven-month-old DS favorite New Super Mario Bros., which made 10th place across all non-PC platforms by selling 125,000 copies. Right behind it was an even older title for Nintendo's plucky dual-screen handheld, Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, which sold 95,000-plus units. The most popular PlayStation Portable game was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, which came in 18th with 71,866 copies.

However, the month's biggest game on any platform was on the PC. The World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade expansion pack sold a whopping 1.4 million copies from the 15 days in between its January 16 release and the end of the month, proving that the WOW fan base's appetite for new content is insatiable.

red-orc, i'll tell you what they are doing. they have all made the mistake of thinking that burning crusade is useless until you get to level 58, which is not true!

Simple for the 4.5M players, they bought it online or crack it.

World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade sold 3.5 million units worldwide, but there are 8 million players - wtf are those 4.5 million paying users doing?? Are they still playing the original game? All of them?! Or may it be, that sanity won and they realized, that this game is a gobstopper with fake highlights?

Anyone else notice that on the ALL CONSOLES list the best selling PSP game is Vice City at #18, whereas on the PSP list the best selling game is BoF III? Hrm?

Lol....Namco Museum is still on the GBA best selling list (at #10). I guess that's what happens when store are flooded with $10 copies of a game.....haha

I own everyone of the Top Xbox 3630 games. They are definately top notch plays. The Wii... Nintendo junkies rejoice!!! Not for me though. Owned it and sold it. As for PS3.. keep it because I don't want it. I went from PC gaming to console gaming, and the 360 is the best.. my opinion of course... :)

This actually proves that all three next-gen console, even the PS3, are succeeding. That's what I truely wanted to see as a true gamer this month.

Actually, it's kind of weird how all of the current consoles either contain or rhyme with "three" :-o

WoW... Well, I guess that's proof enough that PC gaming is only as dead as people believe it is.

Chainblast: You're impressed with Twilight Princess selling so well 2 months after release? What about New Super Mario Brothers, only a couple spots behind but a good five months older? Also, SSBM just will not freaking die. I imagine it didn't sell THAT great, but it is still number 3 on GameCube. Surely everyone with a Cube (Or a Wii, for that matter) has that game by now.

Guess all those new DS owners from Christmass or who had to wait to get one in Jan got brain age and NSMB.

@Lilac_Benjie: Madden is 4th on the wii chart :P @Deihmos: You dont seem to know too much, as every review ive seen for it basically says that that the Wii version is the best due to its new original way of playing. I had never played American football in my life, never watched a agme of it, and i barely knew how 2 play the game but i went and bought it, and i found it a blast, despite not having online play which im not too bothered about.

BlueBird: The public doesn't know the actual sales data until well after the month. They have to go back and review a whole lot of stuff before they release this type of data.

Most people that play Madden are hardcore and surely wouldn't be playing it on Wii. Plus Wii has no online play.

Madden NFL 07 is best on Wii people! Why is it in the charts for every system but Nintendo? If your going to buy Madden, buy it on Wii.

January sales??? Aren't we in March? Anyway, it's kind of surprising to see some older games still topping the charts such as: Halo 2, Sims 2, WoW, SSBM, GTA: San Andreas, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Advance, Mario Kart: Circuit, and Halo for the PC. Then again, these games have been topping charts for years (literally).

woot, go Lost Planet & New Super Mario Bros.! they both rock! (y doesn't Microsoft just buy Nintendo or Sony; Bill Gates has enough money 2) wat's really sad, though, is that Super Smash Bros. Melee is STILL in the top 10 4 Gamecube after being released in 2001...THAT'S 5 YEARS OF BEING ON THE CHART!!! I find that just simply amazing

I'm kind of impressed Twilight Princes is still up there 2 months after release.
