The Unreal Tournament games have turned first-person shooting into a blood sport of sorts, and that's what Chaos League looks to do with real-time strategy. This colorful real-time strategy game challenges you to battle for the ultimate trophy in sports, but along the way you'll have to deal with no rules, corrupt refs, and all sorts of over-the-top opponents. And did we mention the combat spells?

Being developed by Cyanide, Chaos League is about a fictional sport that combines football, rugby, and soccer into one brutal affair. Like with most sports, the goal is to score as many points as possible, but you'll have to do it against opponents that learn and adjust to your tactics.

There are 10 different races to pick, many based on fantasy staples, including orcs, elves, and dwarves, and there are more than 70 different types of units. Each race also has its own style and abilities, so the game will be a constant juggling act as you adjust to the latest opponent. And since it's fantasy-based, magic and spell effects also play a role.

Chaos League will also feature a team management mode that will let you do everything from trade players to evaluate the cheerleaders. In keeping with the farcical mood, there can also be doping scandals among the athletes and hooliganism among the fans. Of course, you'll be able to play against your friends, and the game will support up to six players over multiplay.

You've got to hand it to Chaos League for finding some originality in the strategy genre. We'll see how successful it is when the game ships, which is scheduled to happen during the second quarter of the year.
