Castlevania Lords of Shadow producer: new Contra entry needs to "stand out"

Dave Cox says that previous titles like Contra 4 and Hard Corps: Uprising are "not doing anything new" and are remakes of "something that has happened before."

Castlevania Lords of Shadow series producer Dave Cox said on a Siliconera interview that he would love to work on the Contra series, but only if he and his team were able to do something unique and intuitive that hasn't been done before.

Will Contra turn into a third-person bullet hell shooter in the hands of MercurySteam?

"You can't just bring out a generic shooter. You have to have a new idea. I think if we had a new idea and we could combine [it] with the universe of Contra, that would be special. Yeah, watch this space."

Cox said that recent entries in the series like Contra 4 and Hard Corps: Uprising were not doing anything new. "You are basically remaking or doing your slant of something that has happened before. You have to have the things that made that game great, like Castlevania, you need to have that, but you have to not be afraid to do something new. The problem with Contra it hasn’t really had anything done new to it so it's become this hardcore niche game."

He suggested that one way to bring the series out of its hardcore niche shell was to treat it like releasing a new IP in many ways. "We are hardcore gamers, we played those games, but there are a lot of people that don’t know what Contra is. They have no idea. There is a massive audience out there; they play Call of Duty and love those games, but they don't know what Contra is. I think if we were going to reintroduce something to that audience, it has to be new and unique. It's got to stand out. It's got to have a new idea, something really cool about it that's never been done before."

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be out this November.

It's all but official that they're gonna work on Contra at this point.

Whatever you do, I NEED platforming, man. Contra without platforming is no Contra.

I'd agree that the Gears of War series has been the closest thing to a next-gen Contra...obviously they'd have to come up something new, just to not be considered a rip-off, if they ever came around to doing it...I'd prefer a fresh take on LifeForce, which was an incredible game.

Oh god no, the original formula works, and the changed art style while fresh didn't feel like Contra. Shattered Soldier did things right, please don't give us another Neo Contra for the love of God.

It should be a super fast take on Gears of War, though it'd need some more mechanics, because there needs to be a part where you're climbing up a huge wall as you fight a boss.

If they turn it into a crap of duty game I am out.   Or pull a Killer instictf and make a bad street fighter 4 clone that looks nothing like KI.

Oh HELL NO! No 2D, NO SUCCESS! Adapting the old franchise 3rd person shooter = Ultimate FAIL! That fool is damn blind.

I prefer  any developer (Treasure, Platinum Games, etc.) to make Contra than Mercury Steam.

They already made the game he is talking about.  It's called Gears of War.

So it's either gonna be a 3rd-person cover-based shooter or a FPS from the sound of it. Not sure how that is going to work out. Guess we will find out soon enough.

Since he used Devil May Cry for Lord of Shadows, I wonder what game is gonna "inspire" contra...

If the Lords of Shadow developer picks up Contra...I will definitely check it out.

When is Gamespot going to do their own interviews? Just sayin..While the content is usually up to date here regarding the industry,  would really like Gamespot to actually interview people instead of linking from other websites' interviews. :/

With that said...still waiting for Axelay 2, Konami.

"You have to have the things that made that game great, like Castlevania, you need to have that, but you have to not be afraid to do something new."

Right...except the only element of what made Castlevania "Castlevania" in you're utter bastardization of the series is the name Castlevania in the title. I'm actually happy that Castlevania is going into limbo rather than these toolboxes cranking out more current gen action game drivel under the franchise's banner.

Can't wait to not play the soulless Gears of Duty phone in they put together for Contra.

Last thing Contra needs is to become a generic, forgettable FPS made just for the sake of Team Deathmatch.

Why not? Nobody else is doing anything with it right now.

Contra 4 was godlike.  And I agree with PrpleTrtle below... NO MORE QTE'S!!!!!!  That whole idea was cool for like 2 years. All I need is a Spread gun and hanging from missles!! :'D

As long as a decent game comes out like lords of shadow did i'd be on board for a next gen contra title.

Another classic konami game i'd like to see get new life is Lifeforce/Gradius. and and maybe policenauts.

Please don't turn Contra into a Call of Duty ripoff. The last fun action shooter I played was Vanquish.

Would be interesting to see a 3d game with the player making 12 feet somersaults while shooting exactly where he wants.

And no QTEs! And one hit death with 3 lives!

Konami should not try to reinvent Contra. It was tried with Megaman (Megaman 64) and Bomberman (Bomberman Act Zero) Those games didn't do well after being reinvented. Contra has been always a niche Hard core game. Even back in it's heyday. In the arcade and on NES & SNES etc. Trying to reinvent Contra for the masses will fail.

Love these guys and it's a shame they won't be doing another Castlevania. I would welcome a Contra game made by these guys.

They did make a new Contra. And it is amazing. It's also called Vanquish :)

I loved Contra and it is a shame Konami has let this series die. Just imagine an HD 2D side scrolling shooter. Would be awesome. I just don't trust Konami to do it.

@NTM23 Vertical action is vital in Contra. Try imagining a Contra game without a jump button. I don't understand how it's even comparable with Gears of War or Call of Duty other than the masculine bam bam.

Platforming should be almost as big challenge as the enemies are.

@DinoBuster What makes a game "Castlevania"?  If both Super Castlevania 4 and Castlevania Symphony of the Night are "Castlevania" then I'm sure I can prove to you that his "utter bastardization" is "Castlevania" too.

@DinoBuster I really want to see the look on the faces of these people when CLOS 2 gets all 9 and 10. You are SOTN fanboys and THAT has been sucked too much. I really hated SOTN and someone has to tell me where the f*ck the legendary whip was. Also were the designers too lazy to create another map and just inverted the caste we had seen before? This all is while the scenery in LOS is unlike anything I have seen and I don't really see how those people where supposed to create a chained weapon  combat system without borrowing from GOW. If you know a way please tell me.

@Megavideogamer Wasn't Megaman 64 just Mega Man Legends on the N64? And MML was actually a good game (though the final boss was a huge pain in the ass).

@Snakepond1 Konami did released a Contra HD 2D side scroller. It's called Hard Corps: Uprising developed by Arc System Works and came out on 2011 as a digital download for PSN and XBLA.

headbanger1186
headbanger1186

@PrpleTrtleBuBum @NTM23 It's definitely not comparable, you're correct. It's when we strip too many things away and change things too much that it becomes alien to it's identity they developed from the beginning. I am not completely against change, and don't expect near cloned copies with different characters like Disgaea shamelessly does for the most part, but if you take a series with diehard fans with fond memories and warp them with making an "ALL OUT NEW BALLS TO THE WALL BRO-OP SHOOTER WITH COVER MECHANICS". It's just going to essentially feel like an even shittier Army of Two or yes Gears Of War.If they tested the waters with an HD collection and saw that people don't really need a lot of change like that, I think they would be pleased and the fans would as well. I was happy with Double Dragon Neon, it had some different visual flair but overall it had just the right amount of new without polarizing the original fans that adopted the series in the first place.

@alim298@DinoBusterI can appreciate that you liked LoS, and while I'm not specifically an SoTN fanboy, I can't argue that I am a Castlevania fanboy, and personally I found LoS to be extremely disappointing.

I'm all for innovation and experimentation in established series, this is how we get our Metroid Primes and our Megaman Legends. That said, LoS was completely devoid of ANYTHING that made Castlevania what it's been known for. Playing it is like watching a dude who does nothing but follow sports reinterpret Shakespeare.

Again, I'm not saying you or anyone else is "wrong" for liking LoS, but what I am saying is that LoS is a by the numbers action game with an aesthetically by the numbers presentation.

As a current gen entry in a series that is known for its rich gothic overtones, haunting music, and interesting character design, I, (again, my personal opinion) thought it sucked across the board. And because I've come to this conclusion with LoS and the 3DS game this dev has put out, I would bet good money that I'll think the same about whatever it is that they cannibalize Contra into.

MayMosh

@Pilgrim117 @MayMosh LOS is nothing but a god of war-uncharted-shadow of the colossus rip off have you played those games pilgrim? every single mechanic in LOS was stolen( not borrowed) from those games and from your commentary is obvious that you don't know nothing about storytelling, LOS has an insulting plot hole that someone like you couldn't notice so where's LOS greatness?

Snakepond1

Please don't compare those games to Contra, Super C or Contra on the SNES.

Snakepond1

You're kidding me, right? Hard Corps ain't no sequel to Contra. Just my opinion. Contra on the DS on the other hand was a sequel, but shitting graphics.

@EquilibriumEos SPOILERS when you confront a Colossus in SOTC you don't need QTE's to climb it 'cause you have a gripping meter so your precious LOS failed in this topic, the plot hole I'm talking about after you defeat the first "titan" (real titans are in God Of War 3 by the way) your beloved one doesn't tell you the truth conveniently  about the Lords of shadow origin so Gabriel can go on his pointless journey and ends up crying like a baby for the loss of someone that didn't tell him the truth, want more? now there's plot holes in previous Castlevania games of course but this is modern gaming and many contemporary games shine not just for gameplay but the awesome stories they tell, the real LOS ending comes in the DLC so we received an unfinished product if you wanna know how Gabriel end up like that you have to buy it so companies like Konami disrespects consumers for people like you guys saying that their products are "great".

EquilibriumEos
EquilibriumEos

@MayMosh @Pilgrim117

God of War, Uncharted and Shadow of the Colossus rip off? You've got to be joking. GoW features multiple weapons while LoS features one where parrying, riposting and dodging are involved (not to mention that Gabriel is more agile and faster than Kratos).

The platforming doesn't resemble Uncharted in anyway and the titan battles stand out on their own.

"LOS has an insulting plot hole that someone like you couldn't notice so where's LOS greatness?"

An imaginary plot-hole then seeing as you can't even mention it. I think you forget about the illogical contradictions of the original time-line where in one case Dracula dies "forever" against his son and then suddenly he's back again 100 years later.

If LoS is the worst in the series then you clearly haven't played anything past or before SOTN. Try Adventure Rebirth - Gameboy and Castlevania 64 (which featured skeletons on motorbikes) then come back to me.

@Snakepond1 I agree. It's a DECENT game and all and not ugly but it isn't Contra no matter that it intends to serve as a side story. I'd say the best thing would be to take Super Contra as a model and make it HD but still 2D. I don't mean a remake or something that only does what the previous games did either but takes what has gone before and actually adds to it or redefines it.
