Castle of Illusion HD out September 3

Sega's downloadable remake releasing early next month on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, and PC for $15; North America preorders on PS3 will receive copy of original Genesis version.

Castle of Illusion HD, the downloadable remake of Disney's 1990 Sega Genesis game, will be released through digital platforms next month.

The game will arrive on September 3 for PlayStation Network, followed by a September 4 release for Xbox Live and PC. All versions of the game will sell for $15.

Publisher Sega also announced today that North America preorders for Castle of Illusion HD on PlayStation Network will receive a downloadable version of the original Sega Genesis game. The download code will be redeemable immediately after preordering.

The offer is good for preorders placed August 20 through September 2 and is not supported for the Xbox 360 or PC versions of the game. The promotion also includes a dynamic theme and three avatars.

Castle of Illusion HD was announced in April. The game is in development at Sega Studios Australia. The developer said its aim is to make sure the game maintains the "Disney magic" of the decades-old original.

Castle of Illusion was definitely a good game - but personally, Mickey Mania was by far the best of the Mickey Mouse games, and is far too often overlooked.

I wonder if it will get the same special GS treatment that Ducktales got? If not then GS are clearly racist against ducks.

Just doesn't have the charm of the hand drawn animation.  The least they could've done was cel shade it at least.

Pass.

I'm slowly going against remakes, don't think I've played one that lived up to the original or improved it (in any way that makes it worthwhile.)

In this case I fear they may have changed everything that made the game great.

Can we just make sure that Tom writes the review for this game as well.  That will finally put the nail in the coffin of HD game remakes.  Oh how I hate playing a classic game with HD graphics, tons of cool new features, and cutscenes that are so horrible that I actually have to skip.  No guys really...they were so bad I had to skip them!  I know it sounds difficult to hit a button to skip a cutscene but seriously...it killed the experience for me.

The cam is moving very prompt with the characters movements which dont feels right...the cam should be bit slower.Mickey changes directions while in air too quick(after a jump) which i see already as a reason of jump/timing problems.
Nice for all how are looking for this game but I still like real 2d plattforming better and handdrawn sprites/enemies are more charming.
Mickey looks very generic here.
Maybe my nostalgia is too strong but games like Hero Tonma,PC Kid,Bonze Adventure,Son Son 2,Quackshot,Monster World and even the original Castle of Illusion are top plattformers for me(yeah,i didnt mentioned any Mario game...it isnt my cup of tea...strange,liked Great Gianna Sisters on the C64 for some reason more which was a heavy plagiat of a Mario game lol)

so pumped for this! One of my first real gaming memories was going to a friends place when I was a kid and playing the original on his Mega Drive. I saved up my pocket money for a whole year so i could get a console of my own and play this and Sonic. This will be awesome and actually looks like a lot of work has gone into it.

Wow. The original was great for its time. I just don't know about know. I mean I love remakes, but $15 is a little pricy in my opinion.

Yay, more long-forgotten game companies trying to rehash nostalgic platformers for the sake of a cash grab, whooooo!

In all seriousness, I hope this isn't DuckTales all over again.

While I don't think the recent Duck Tales game was as bad as what Gamespot made it out to be, I've already seen this game in action and it looks great. The orchestral music is especially good.

I'm probably biased as I was a big fan of the original, but this looks like a much better attempt at updating a classic platformer than Duck Tales.

The art style looks great, doesn't have the weird disconnect between hand drawn sprites and rendered backgrounds that made Duck Tales look a bit strange.

Also looks like they have updated the game itself with some added content. Probably won't please the purists but 8bit/16bit era platformers were generally pretty short games. Fleshing out the game with longer levels and breaking up the side scrolling with some 3D exploration seems a smart move.

My nostalgia is ready :)

If the game is reviewed by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, then a shitstorm is on the horizon.

Bet this game ends up getting a 4.5 on here.

Looking forward to the remake. Not looking forward to the McShea review.

Will this PS3 pre-order be available for UK/Euro PSN too? Getting the Sega Genesis version with sounds like an awesome idea

Just dont let Tom McShea review this game.

I'm sure he'll give it a low score strictly because its an HD Remake of an old game and thats a big no-no in his world.

@JimmeyBurrows Resident Evil REmake says hi. But that game certainly seems to be the exception to the rule.

@gamer4ever7777 And you already know he's gonna give it a low score.  I don't care though.  I loved the original and this version looks great, so I'm getting either way.  Too many people rely too heavily on reviewers these days as if their numerical grade given isn't subjective or opinion.  It's just a review.

WhiteStormy

@Donrock12 No one is making you play HD remakes of games, and one person's review isn't going to "put the nail" in its coffin.  If you don't like them play something else.

@sladakrobot Ah man!! Great Giana Sisters. That game had style. THAT was the difference to the Mario game, and the music of Chris Hülsbeck has immortalized it.

I understand why you typed the double 'n' in 'Giana' btw since that was the case in the giant font;ed title, scrolling in the intro. It has been explained to be a typo, however :P

@Snakepond1 Think of it like this. 10 for the HD game, 5 for the Genesis game, avatars and theme.

@JamDev Agree. I have fond memories of the original. Graphics look great on this new one, will be downloading as soon as.

@Tribesmaster LOL! I was gonna write the same thing! Gamespot seems to hate classic remakes nowadays, just for being too true to the original. They deduct too many points off the score for it. Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded got the same shaft as Duck Tales for the same fundamental reason "too classic."

dlCHIEF58

@Tribesmaster

Probably right if they let Tom McShea review it - that guy is terrible. Any game he reviews you can almost guarantee is should be scored at least 2 points higher if not more.

dlCHIEF58

@Psycho_truth

I wouldn't trust a review here if Tom McShea writes it. Definitely check other sites' reviews as Gamespot has become a joke for the majority of theirs lately.

DrKill09

@F0Xhole @JimmeyBurrows Yeah, but very few remakes or remasters are good.  Zombie Driver HD was an improvement.  A decent amount of the HD rereleases on PS3 are good, but there are also terrible ones, like Silent Hill... ugh.  They made it from alpha source code.  BLECK!

BLACKWINGS17
BLACKWINGS17

Nearly ALL of the HD collections for PS3 are awesome, and very few of them are "terrible" as you say.

I will never understand the whole "I would much rather take out my PS2 and play on my crappy standard definition television than play an upscaled version on my HDTV" argument. Especially when you can get all the games in the series for the same price that you purchased one of the games originally, with better graphics, and you don't have to go through the trouble of breaking out your old system and dusty tube television. (Not trying to imply this is the argument you are necessarily making, but the argument has been made by others. Personally, I have yet to play a remake that wasn't better than the original, even it if was by only a few improvements - and I own and play a lot of remakes.
