Case against League of Legends player who reportedly made terrorist threat to move forward

Judge denies 19-year-old Justin Carter's motion to dismiss the case.

The case against a Texas teenager who was jailed after an argument from League of Legends spilled over onto Facebook is going to move forward. A judge denied the motion to dismiss the case against 19-year-old Justin Carter this week, as reported by Texas news site KENS5.

Carter was arrested in March after he said on Facebook following a League of Legends match that he was going to "shoot up" a school and "eat their still, beating hearts," according to his father.

He reportedly followed up these comments with "LOL" and "JK." A woman in Canada saw his comments and informed the police, who arrested Carter for making a terrorist threat.

Carter's comments came just months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were killed. An "anonymous Good Samaritan" posted Carter's $500,000 bail in July.

His lawyer said Carter's comments were "clearly" sarcastic, and prosecutors would have known that if they examined the entire Facebook comment thread, he argued. A new date for the case has not been announced.

Carter faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Serves him right for joking about shooting up a school. For too long the government has refused to take death threats seriously and as a result allowed many shootings to happen that could have been stopped because the threats were ignored. For all we know he could have actually been planning to shoot up a school like so man others, its a sick world out there.

Avoiding rape in the shower rooms is the least concern for this guy. He doesn't have a future after spending 10 years in prison. After he gets out he will probably be a criminal or will shoot himself. Good job USA.

This kid is clearly an a**hole but, so is the judge.  How dare he tie up our court system with this petty bullsh*t.  Slap him with a fine and be done with it.

It's about time.  The internet needed a crackdown on douchery well over a decade ago.  Throw the book at this kid (a tough fine and some ridiculous amount of community service that basically means he won't have a free weekend until he's like 40) and maybe it'll be a good lesson for everyone that being on the internet doesn't mean it's ok to be human garbage.

facebook, and twitter are like the real world now, so be very, very careful what you say and do there. Soon, You tube will be like that too, its just a matter of time they already taking small steps towards that goal.

It's hard to feel bad for him. Maybe this will give people something to think about before they click "post". There's something so satisfying about an internet tough guy in a situation where he might actually deal with some real thugs. Hopefully it won't be too bad for him, but he's an idiot, so I won't lose any sleep either way.

So glad Facebook and Twitter didn't exist when I was a teenager.

I guess I am one of the few who says GOOD. There have been many school shootings, what if the authorities did nothing, then he really did go shoot up a school, would you then blame the authorities for doing nothing? Yes there is freedom of speech, you can say whatever the hell you want, doesn't mean there won't be consequences. If you walk up to a black guy and call him *insert racial slur here* then don't be surprised if he beats your ass for it. If you yell fire in the middle of the mall and cause a panic don't be surprised if you get charged with mischief. Dude is 19 years old, he should know that "jokes" like these are not funny especially when these shooting do happen.

10 years in jail sure will screw that kid up if he isn't already.  Hope the bitch who ratted him out has at least a remote understanding of what she has done to his life.

So back in high school, my friends and I totally joked about capturing the president and eating his brain to learn all the national secrets he has stored inside. And we didn't even attempt to cover our tracks with "lol j/k"!

This is stupid. Government is wasting time on something that almost EVERY teen does every day! Should we all round up the kids who say "I screwed your mom last night and she enjoyed it!"? Oh wait, since most of them are minors, then shouldn't we arrest all of these indecent mothers for having intimate relations with minors?

The government should be smart enough to discern who's a real threat and who's just bullcrapping. If they can't figure out which is which, how are we supposed to count on them to catch the real criminals and terrorists? While they're trying to get this kid in as much trouble as they could, probably to set a precedent on a country that runs on censorship, the real bad guys are murdering people out there, blowing up trains and innocent people!

This is really unfortunate, a hard lesson to learn.  We have all done and said stupid things that we regret... To make a comment saying that you are going to shoot up a school should be taken seriously.  In this case it seems as the kid was making a sick joke however the authorities do have an obligation and should investigate such statements.  If someone says they are going to do something like shoot up a school, regardless if its a joke or not, and that person commits the crime and nothing was done beforehand.. the defense of , all well... he did say jk / lol.  What would that sound like??

With that said, criminalizing statements is a fine line.  Is it the same as screaming fire in a crowded room?  hard to say.  I don't think this kid should be put in prison or serve any jail time for what was said.  I think the whole process has been punishment enough... we'll have to see how it plays out.

For the record, I do think this whole case is absurd.  It's a waste of tax payers time and money and in the end it won't stop some other mental deficient from shooting up a school full of kids.  Our world is never going to be secure against psychos and crazies who want to do crazy things, and prosecuting this poor idiot isn't going to make ME feel any safer by a long shot.

That being said, I can't bring myself to have any sympathy for someone that would make such statements....even in anger, and certainly not as a joke.  I feel ashamed that something like this is going as far as it is, but I don't feel sorry for the dumb SOB for saying something so asinine.  Problem with the world these days is that everyone feels like it's ok to say dumb shit like this.  So, I don't know what's a more ominous sign for us as a race, that our governments will take us to the hem just for opening our mouths....or that our society is quickly being populated by wankers who think and behave like this kid.  Either way, it doesn't bode well

Apparently, his opponents seem intent on making an example out of him and parading him around as an example of them stopping a school shooting, one which wasn't going to take place anyway.

Paranoia about any subject is dangerous to any society, even if it does mean that the human brain is working properly.

@Senor_KamiYea ten years sounds about right for opening your mouth and letting something incredibly stupid pour out.  OR maybe, just MAYBE try using your motherfucking head and just a little bit of compassion or empathy and realize what a absurd sentence you are talking about for a child that decided to say something stupid.  It's a fucking kid saying something stupid.  Either you too are a toughtless kid or an adult that has no place making decisions that affect anyone elses life.  10 years for a shitty joke, seriously sir, go fuck yourself.

@Senor_Kami Why penalize someone for a bad joke? So now we should give fines to Louie CK too? Are you nuts?

Tuckpoint

@PS2fweakHopefully others have more compassion when standing in judgement over you.  It's a teenager, they make mistakes still, even stupid ones.  A decade in prison and you can't feel sorry for him?  Do you have any idea of the precedent this will set in the legal system for the future?  Do you consider anything at all outside of your own quest to feel vindicated?  This isn't fucking Sparta and if you believe in free speech at all, that also covers douchebag and trolls.  People you should be able dismiss without having to fucking ruin the rest of their lives because they have an abrasive personality.  Grow the fuck up guy.

Tuckpoint
Tuckpoint

@stan_boydGood that someone be imprisoned for a decade because they have a poor taste in humor.  Do you really think prison time is an appropriate punishment for this kid?  How is this kid going to get a decade for saying something stupid and a rich kid plows over four people while drunk and high and gets 10 years of PROBATION because he's rich?

Yes if you are in someones face antagonizing them repeatedly, you should probably expect to get punched.  You should never expect any sort of prison term for calling anyone a bad name, esp at an age where you're not known for thinking anything over before acting.

You lack empathy for your fellow human beings and I hope you do not suffer the same at the hands of someone equally thoughtless as yourself.

@poopinpat I'm pretty sure he was already pretty screwed up. The woman who told authorities was just doing what she thought was right. Maybe Justin should've done the same thing. Instead, he thought it was funny to make "jokes" about killing kindergarten kids in 2013.

Yes they are smart enough to see who a threat and it us the common citizen. Why do you think they constantly attemp to infringed on our right, intimidated us with cops, Irs, bureaucrats, etc, and spy on us 24/7. Speaking of which they admitted the armerica public is the enemy when the charged edward Snowdon with espionage which according to the law is giving informatiin to the enemy (the public ie us).

They are trying to scare the sheep among us to say nothing when they get angry at see an injustice

@meatz666 @Senor_Kami What you don't get is that there have been several people who publicly threaten to kill others and actually went through with it while authorities though it was just the person venting steam (the opposite of now). The authorities finally woke up and started taking the threats seriously.

This is not the first time something like this has happened and the government needed to start taking action such as they did against Carter. Previously angry teens would bring a gun to school and end many lives some would even leave public threats before doing so and have their warnings shrugged off. Now it seems to be the opposite of that an the government is finally taking it seriously.

tightwad34
tightwad34

@Tuckpoint It is too bad he's being made an example of, but where do you start and end? The endless threats that go on are getting way out of control and they really do need to stop. Don't know if this is the best for that, but someone needs to pay the price to hopefully stop at least one person from doing the same. I know it will never stop even if someone pays the ultimate price, but sometimes morons need to learn the hard way. There is no need for what he did.

@Tuckpoint@stan_boydAll you're doing is excusing bad behavior.  I'm not saying the kid deserves to get 10 years in prison, or any years in prison, but it's about being held accountable for your actions.  In this day and age, with social media presenting the opportunity for internet tough guys to pretend to be tough guys, this kid is being used to set an example.

As for "an age where you're not known for thinking anything over before acting", that's one of the worst arguments you could possibly use to defend this kid.  In that case, perhaps others who are 18 years old shouldn't be prosecuted for things such as crimes of passion or killing somebody over their shoes.  Because they're not known for thinking before acting, right?  Poor excuse and horrendous cop out.  He's an adult.  At some point in time he has to begin using proper judgement.  Nobody should be making excuses for his inability to do so.  He's not 10.

Tuckpoint

@PS2fweak@poopinpatAs a parent I find it necessary to go down the comments and fight for my opinion as you seem to be doing.  Are you really championing the consequences this boy is facing as the right thing to do?  He made some bad taste joke, yes they lack class and imo aren't funny.  10 years, have you even considered the amount of time this child faces?  A bad taste joke, or a thousand bad taste jokes do not a screwed up kid make.  A lack of empathy and compassion for your fellow man makes me more suspicious of your behavior than the dumb ramblings of a desensitized teenager.

Tuckpoint
Tuckpoint

@PS2fweak@G1ingyYou shouldn't be standing in judgement of other peoples intelligence, you don't have a whole lot of it yourself.  Your gut feeling and generalizations are not law enforcement material and you certainly don't need to be making decisions that affect anyone's life.

Tuckpoint
Tuckpoint

@tightwad34Too bad he's being made an example of?  Have you considered at all what prison will do to this person?  This isn't an affluenza case where a pos drunken kid actually kills FOUR people and walks off with probation.  This is a kid that made a joke, a really shitty joke and his life is going to be OVER if convicted.  FOR.  A.  JOKE.  No one needs to pay the price of the entirety of the rest of their life because they offended or bruised your god damned fragile sensibilities.

Be an adult, recognize dumb shit when you see it.   Learn not to get all hyperbolic when it comes to being a judgmental dipshit trying reign in all of humanity under your ideology.

There is no need for ten years of imprisonment for a child who says ignorant anything.

Tuckpoint
Tuckpoint

@charlieholmesTwisted what?  Did you read the article ffs it was an argument and someone likened him to an insane person to which the kid made a smartass comment.  I have three kids myself and if I was to punish them for each and every smartass comment I'd never be done.

Maybe, just maybe you adult the fuck up, spend a little time trying to understand those around you instead of standing up for every person that's managed to get themselves butthurt over some petty argument on the internet.  It doesn;t matter if someones in your face screaming racial slurs at you, calling your mom _______ or being a bigot.  In fact they have a constitutional RIGHT to do so that is protected by LAW.  You should be ADULT enough to recognize the persons own failings without having to levy a TEN year prison sentence to appease your need for vindication.

I'm not trying to champion bad behavior rights here, I'm asking that the reasonable among you try and not steam roll other peoples lives with your 30 second presumptuous opinions.

Tuckpoint
Tuckpoint

@notorious98@Tuckpoint@stan_boydexcusing bad behavior,  is that what I'm doing not wanting someone to go to prison for something they said in jest?  I'm just being lenient right?  Someones got to be held accountable for their actions!  In this day and age where everyone does their best to avoid responsibility and laughs at the very concept of accountability.

Yes where we need to start is with the internet tough guys as you presumptuous people keep labeling him, less than a paragraph of material this child wrote up is PLENTY enough to hold ourselves in judgement over him.  NO ASSUMPTION HERE, NO GUT FEELINGS.  JUST COLD HARD FACTS, right?

Your own law makers are lying to your face every single day and making decisions that kill off thousands of people that don't have the same pigment of skin.  No background checks for the mentally unstable, no no they need their gun rights.  CLEARLY whats causing the school and theater tragedy is people making dumb comments on the internet.  We MUST make an example of them!  HE'S EIGHTEEN, THATS AN ADULT, HE'S TOTALLY EXPERiENCED ALL THAT LIFE HAS TO OFFER AND HAS NOTHING MORE TO LEARN.

You are comparing a kid making a bad taste joke to fucking murderers and thieves you moron, where's the police to teach you a lesson?  What ever happened to punishment that fits the crime.  Take your 10 year jail sentences for saying something and jam them straight up your fascist ass.

PS2fweak
PS2fweak

@Tuckpoint @PS2fweak @poopinpat Like I said in another reply, he's not the one to fight for. I don't hate him, but at age 19, I would never say anything like that and my friends never said anything like that.

And stop trying so hard to judge me. I don't like Justin, because he exposed himself publicly and I didn't like what I saw. That's fair. Now I have an opinion on his actions and the potential outcome of his actions and you're suspicious of my behavior? Really? Am I the only one who feels this way? Did I arrest Justin Carter?

We can disagree, but don't attack me because I don't agree with you. How can you argue for Justin's freedom to speak his mind, but my words are just too much for you? You should really think about what you're talking about, and then reread my original post. I don't want the worst for him, but you're telling me I can't dislike a guy like that? I need to have compassion for him?
