Carmageddon dev raises $3.5 million

Investment from Bullfrog Productions founder will allow Stainless Games to bring Reincarnation also to next-gen platforms.

by

Carmageddon: Reincarnation developer Stainless Games today announced a $3.5 million investment from Bullfrog Productions founder Les Edgar. The new funds add to the $625,000 raised through the initial Kickstarter campaign for the vehicular mayhem game last year.

The game was previously slated only for PC, but is now expected to arrive for unspecified next-generation platforms.

"We are delighted to have fully funded Carmageddon: Reincarnation without having to go outside of the collective of our own company, shareholders, and fans," Stainless Games CEO Patrick Buckland said in a statement. "It allows us to maintain a true independence and creative control whilst not having to compromise quality or content by budgetary constraints."

Carmageddon: Reincarnation is currently scheduled to launch in December 2013, though it is not clear if development for next-gen platforms will see that release window pushed back.

Stainless Games released an iOS version of the original Carmageddon last year, while an Android version is in the works.

Man, This was the game that made me like car games. They need to make an HD version of the original game ! The second racing game for me is Road Rash.

NOOO!!!

not my favorite childhood franchise...

i HATE it when they take a beloved game series after SOO many years and restart it...:'(

and it's probably gonna suck due to the fact that video game companies are so cautious now an days (meaning no running over pedestrians or gore).

i really wish they would leave this series alone..

Cool.  Finally a good Carmageddon on consoles...

Although I'm definitely  getting it on pc.

What? That's not how Kickstarter is supposed to work. If I'm understanding correctly, they promised a PC-exclusive game, raised more than 1.5 times the amount supposedly required to make it, and then they went back on their word about PC-only and also became beholden to an investor who will almost certainly aim for something more consolized than any of the Kickstarter backers wanted. Quoting from the Kickstarter:

"Now we have our baby back we really don’t want to have any creative control of the new game wrestled from us by a corporate investor"

What happened? I'm never trusting these guys again!

I'm torn on this one.  I backed it, and I'm not sure this is good news.  We now have another party that has invested 5x the amount of the Kickstarter.  That means that the backers who backed it with a certain game in mind, now have far less weight.  This could be awesome, or it could totally backfire.

Oh cool. Carmageddon's a mad game, I remember having a go of the old one on a friends pc a long time ago, never played it properly though because we always used to use the cheats =P

I'll look out for news of the new one and if it's any good.

@axelx666 i've watched some footage of the very early stages of the game and it looked very prommising. don't wory, that's what the kickstarter does, giving the middle finger to the political correct publishers.

@axelx666 It wouldn't be Carmageddon without the ability to run over people with wreckless abandon...They'll keep it in, trust me.  The whole point of the article is to let the fans know they will not be hindered buy too-cautious publishers.

@marinerzz and what exactly is your problem? so what if it goes to consoles as well? it's not a simulation game anyway. jesus...stop bitching for no reason... just be glad that they made it so far and it's almost sure now that we're going to have a new Carmageddon game....

@marinerzz It looks like they are well aware of the concerns, %s to pretty much your exact worries.

A particularly important quote:

Our primary platform of development has been, and continues to be, PC. The design document and philosophy that we’re working to hasn’t changed in the slightest. It was always our intention to make any compromises that might be required to console builds only after the primary PC version was complete, rather than tune all the releases of the game to the lowest common denominator in platform terms. The PC version would never be “nobbled” to bring it technically into line with a less capable console version. The same can be said for any censorship that might be required either by territory or platform rights holder.

@hystavito I'm hoping they just use it to extend their ambitions. :) More exposure and more money for the project couldn't hurt!

I'm with you in the hopes that we still get Carmageddon as pitched, but I'm not gonna fret too much, this is a massive increase in budget. If they can use that to do the game even better, even if it means delaying the launch, then go for it.

I just want them to come through on it being Carmageddon, 100% Carmageddon!! :D

@rapboy_905 I believe that was only the German version that had green blood and zombies.

@spagyetti FYI - The original is on Gog.com for $10 and plays fine on Win7 64. The "Glide" version of it holds up surprisingly well.

@Kaiser499 And Dungeon Keeper... And a PROPER Syndicate...

Just another brilliant dev house now nothing more than an EA casualty. :(

@Daemoroth @Kaiser499 Actually, EA got them back when EA wasn't so bad.  Dungeon Keeper and Theme Hospital came out a few years after EA bought them.

@kool_zed_speaks @DarkSaber2k @HWGuy14 Fair enough, but I think the fact I've been playing games for so long I can't accurately remember their release years would suggest I'm hardly a kid. And neither is anyone else who was actually playing the first Carmageddon OR Twisted Metal at release.
