Capcom to 'aggressively' seek overseas partnerships

Japanese publisher not considering merger with local game and toy makers due to focus on international growth, potential licensing limits.

by

Even with the recent success of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD on the most recent Japanese Media Create chart, Capcom doesn't seem to be content to rest on its laurels. According to a recent public memo on the mergers and acquisitions objectives tabs on Capcom's official investor relations site, the company is planning to increase its game sales outside of Japan via partnerships and acquisitions.

Slant Six Games is working with Capcom to create Operation Raccoon City.

The note states that Capcom plans to "aggressively seek the opportunities of acquisitions and partnerships for the purposes of creating game content with universal market appeal and acquiring technologies and know-how required for [the company's] 'Single Content Multiple Usage' strategy." Capcom is neither planning nor considering a merger with local game manufacturers and publishers as this may limit its licensing potential and will not increase sales outside of Japan, according to the note.

The stance is essentially identical to the one Capcom previously expressed in its 2010 annual report. One potentially noteworthy change is that the publisher's revised position states it is "aggressively" pursuing acquisitions and partnerships, where the annual report statement only described the company as "actively" going after them.

The most notable Capcom partnership with a Western company in recent years was its acquisition of Blue Castle Games, which led to the creation of Dead Rising 2. The studio is now called Capcom Game Studio Vancouver. Capcom is also letting the Vancouver-based studio Slant Six Games develop Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City and teamed with Washington-based Airtight Games for last year's Dark Void.

'Single Content Multiple Usage' strategy." That would explain the 3 or 4 versions of Marvel Vs. Capcom that come out all the time. Hey I've got an idea to 'aggressively' pursue! Make a promise to bring back a popular franchise, invite gamers to help make it,actually focus on it instead of burying it under layers of 'Super','Ultra',and 'Mega' MvC links on your website, and then DON'T cancel it. I know it sounds crazy but it just might work. What they've done with Lost PLanet 2, Megaman Universe, and Legands 3 has pushed me over the edge. Burn and die Capcom.

I traded in and sold all my capcom games, and I don't plan on buying anything else they make. unless they bring back some Megaman and stop this MILKING (insert word here)... I am allergic to BS! :P

maybe some of these other partnerships will give us some sodding Breath of Fire, Megaman, and Darkstalkers love.

Well for one with the economy being down I doubt really if seeking games with more "Western appeal" is going to really help that much.

Capcom ah yes. One of my top 3 favorites. Before seeking out new partnerships they should focus on keeping their in house talent, if any still remain. With the way the new DMC is shaping up they may be in a world of more hurt down the road....

If even half of the people commenting here actually do start to buy all of their Capcom games used, they might listen. Or they'll find a way to make sure you don't get to fully enjoy the used game. like EA and their new system.

I'm still shunning capcom because they canceled Megaman Legends 3....

You really want to hurt them don't just save your dollar. Support their main competition. Nothing would humble Capcom more than to purchase a KOF game (XIII), BlazBlue, Persona 4 (fighting game, recently announced), VF5 and every other IP instead of those made by Crapcalm. Hell that's what I'm doing.

Just to show that I protest with my dollar. I refused to buy some of their later releases. I skipped MvC3, ignored SSF4 AE, didn't waste my time on HD 3rd Strike. Wouldn't even look at Dead Rising II, Lost Planet is lost to me, and UMvC3 is also on my ignore list. Some of us ARE practicing what we preach. If I see a game I like I'm buying, if not then I'll hold off. I enjoyed earlier releases like Dead Rising 1, SSF2:HDR & SF4/SSF4, but that was before I realized how corrupt Capcom is. Therefore, if they continue ruining their IP's. I'll continue to buy from their competitors.

Aggressively seeking partnership. I can't help but think of angry little japanese people with knives and mobster outfits.

Capcom is right as we know japanese games are lagging behind in the global market. Maybe they just need some western concepts to make games with more appeal.

im not sure i like all these collabos. just like when there is too many artists on a track on a album. the vision cant get convoluted. too many cooks in the kitchen, feel me? hopefully im wrong though, and we get a sea of fresh and creative new games.

Hopefully that means more Monster Hunter games in the west.

I feel like Capcom is hanging on by a thin thread and running out of ideas for games. Instead of milking games like Street Fighter and Resident Evil, they need to understand that we don't only know them just for those 2 games. They have to show consumers that they're not just a one trick pony who only knows how to make endless sequels, if the original is a huge successs. Sure, it works, but the games following that is easily forgettable and dies quick. Mediocre crossover fighting games also needs to stop.

Didn't capcom do that once with the game capcom vs tasinoko!!?!? They could have made a ton of money if it wasn't just on the wi.. Personally I think the youth of America could have did research on the characters they didn't know and brought more intrest to the back in the day anime.. I brought a wi just for that game.. It was a good game too.. It should have been a hard core fighter on the Core systems.. I use my wi for a cup holder now..

I agree mostly with what has been stated here about Capcom and their lack of interest in their I.P's, but you have to consider current market trends (which exclude Nintendo and their franchises). For every single "core" gamer that demands a Mega Man, Ghouls N Ghosts, Breath of Fire or (insert your favorite Capcom franchise here) revival entry, there are five "casual" gamers that won't give the title a second glance. Capcom knows this. They also know if they fudge around with a classic I.P. in order for it to appeal to the casual gamer, the core gamers will reach for their pitchforks and torches. This is a double-edge sword in many respects. Capcom has the difficult task of ensuing their I.P's stay true to their origins while expanding game mechanics and making the title "mainstream" enough that both core and casual gamers will buy it. Unfortunately, the massive influx of new casual gamers have cause Capcom and other game developers to concentrate on an emerging audience. Would I love a Ghouls N Ghosts title as deliciously difficult as the original? H*LL YES! Would Capcom release such a title? H*LL NO! Part of the blame is on Capcom, but I mostly blame the industry as a whole for the "easy" mode games and lack of confidence in older franchises.

Not unexpected. All companies are out there to make money, and the world market is way bigger than Japan.

@leeko_link Actually Onimusha and Darkstalkers are being considered for a revival.Google and you will find :)

Breath of Fire = Dead Dark Stalkers/Night Warriors = Dead Star Gladiator/Plasma Sword = Dead Power Stone = Dead Rival Schools/Project Justice = Dead Ghouls 'N' Ghosts = Dead Maximo = Dead Gargoyle's Quest/Demon's Crest = Dead Onimusha = Dead Dino Crisis = Dead Final Fight = Dead Strider = Dead Captain Commando = Dead Viewtiful Joe = Dead and now Mega Man = Dead So many good IPs that need to be revive and yet Capcom continues to milk Street Fighter, Resident Evil, and the vs. games like no tomorrow.

I knew this was coming. A merger was inevitable with the way they're doing business. It sucks, I wish they'd just go under instead.

@ tjoeb123 :Megaman is Capcom's bread and butter (whether it be in more western friendliness, classic name, good name with casual gamers) and it shows either a death-wish or very bad business for them to treat that franchise like a ''red-headed step-child'' .I know it sounds a little revolutionary but it might be good for capcom to realize it is good to treat you best franchise well....

raahsnavj

Does Capcom still make games? I mean, other than a "new" Street Fighter every 4-6 months and the goal of turning RE into CoD?

@moviequest14 This. Inafune: Hey guys, we need to make more Mega Man games! Capcom: (sigh) ...Arrghh...uhh.... --Some time later-- Inafune: I've had it with your attitude! I QUIT!!!! Capcom: Is he gone? Does that mean....(gasp)!! WE CAN DESTROY MEGA MAN ONCE AND FOR ALL NOW!!!! (destroys everything Mega Man related in their offices) But seriously, what the hell are they thinking?! This reminds me so much of Namco and the way they treat Tales games here in the US. You want sales/money? Make Mega Man games. You wanna go bankrupt? Don't make them.

The truth is...Capcom is losing more and more of the grip it once had.It has been a good minute since any actual retail mega-man title has been released and even when they do have what could be a stellar megaman title coming they cancel it for a bogus logicless reason. They only consist of a couple (at best) western-appealing titles (that being Resident Evil and Megaman, monster hunter tri,and possibly street fighter) and often makes close to fatal mistakes with the games they do make (releasing permanent save files of RE:mercenaries, cancelling major titles, etc.) the truth is...after so many cancellations, problems, and niche-specific titles there just isn't as much capcom-game excitement around anymore...capcom has betrayed user trust and it will take a lot to get it back.

Fritzzland

Let's stick with the facts:Megaman is missing,RE is getting sloppy and Street Fighter is being milked... Capcom jewels need new polish or aggressive partnerships won't do!

Megaman has garnered more games, spawned more incarnations than Darkstalkers and Street Fighter combined and you call his fanbase a cult? He's practically Capcom's 3rd best selling series.

Funny thing is people are demanding the DLC everytime a sf gets upgraded they want it dlc and im against this when they get it they all complain about how incomplete or insubstantial it is this is down the the cost per MB idea ms and sony use. I disagree with allot of you suggesting that what people want are the same things they have been doing for years, megaman isnt the big draw it once was infact its more cult than anything else. Ono has said he wants to make darkstalkers if the fans make there feeling known which so far they havent.

I still play that Darkwing Duck game on my AV Famicom system (through FC adapter). It was a solid game, probably the best DW game ever made. But that was Capcom during their glory days. Ever since then they've become a shadow of their former-selves.

TheArcade
TheArcade

And what about charging for DLC which is already on disc. Using DRM on the PC version of SF4 AE not to mention Final Fight for PSN. Plus in Tekken X Street Fighter they killed off Dan. What's even more insulting is they re-milked 3rd Strike (as if I haven't bought Street Fighter III enough times already) even though many of us already have it on the last-gen consoles, then they leave out the original theme music. What's Third Strike without INFINITE!!!!! Fail harder Capcom.

AgentRebecca

What me and alot of friends think thats wrong with Capcom is they have only been really making more versons of the same game titles for a long time, DMC, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, etc...they are running out of ideas and you cant just reboot to make it better, and since they only do the same few games, they dont know how to make new games anymore. I used to love Capcom but they are getting old now...Capcom will go down soon unless God helps them.

G_gglypuff
G_gglypuff

Capcom wants audience? Then just stop slacking around! Stop the DLC abuse, stop releasing unfinished games to surprise the consumers with the finished product later on, and remember to keep up with the older series! There are Darkstalkers, Megaman and I bet even Ghosts'n Goblins who eagerly wait for new installments to their favorite series.

DLC is optional i know, but the core game feels bare and the DLC is overpriced. DLC has to be a worthy addition not a completion to a game half made.

zombiebrian
zombiebrian

DLC is optional if you dont like it dont buy it. Capcom works on demand if there isnt any they wont release it. Fed of megaman fans whining MM isnt popular enough to get a big release anymore and bof has never been great. As a fighting game fan im not impressed by mvc3 being released 9 months before it was ready. Im glad that its getting fixed but i think capcom know they upset people with that. AE wasnt a great addition to sf4 so we get a free update how good is that.
