Capcom six-month profits spike 58%

Publisher rides continued popularity of Resident Evil 5, million-unit start of Monster Hunter Tri to $426M in sales, $32M income during Apr.-Sept. period.

Capcom may have a zombie fetish, but its current fiscal year performance is anything but ambling. Despite a relative dearth of blockbuster titles, Capcom said in July that revenues hit ¥19.5 billion ($213 million) for the April-June quarter, a 19.2 percent revenue growth. Reporting on its six-month performance today, the publisher said that revenues have maintained their double-digit growth pace, rising 24.5 percent for the April-September period to ¥38.9 billion ($426 million).

Not even a kraken could get in the way of Monster Hunter Tri.

What's more, Capcom managed to right its profit trajectory during the back half of its six-month earnings period. Whereas net profits dipped 6.4 percent to ¥2.23 billion ($24.4 million) during the April-June quarter, Capcom said that its six-month income soared 58.4 percent to ¥2.96 billion ($32.4 million).

The publisher's Home Video Games segment again bolstered Capcom's financials. The segment grew revenues to ¥27.7 billion yen ($303 million) during the six-month period, a 68.3 percent rise. Operating income doubled to ¥7.3 billion ($79.9 million).

"As for the video game industry, the Japanese domestic market has been on a downward trend, but it started to show some signs of recovery," Capcom said as part of its report. "Such an improvement, though not steady, is supported by the release of several large-scale titles that energized the home video game market."

Monster Hunter Tri sold 1 million units following its August 1 launch, though Capcom did not delineate how many units were sold as part of the game's Wii bundle. Other top sellers during the period included Resident Evil 5 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the PSP, and Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth for the DS.

Despite the substantial growth in its console and handheld gaming business, Capcom maintained its full-year earnings projections, due to continued weakness in its Arcade segment. For the full year ending March 31, 2010, Capcom expects net sales to hit ¥95 billion ($1.04 billion). Net income is projected to come in at ¥8.5 billion ($93 million).

Capcom is one of the ole'-school game companies, so they will always find a way to make money with great games. The one thing I wish is that Capcom would put Mega Man as a character in Street Fighter 4. That would be a nice bonus...Hopefully we will see that type of thing if there is a Marvel vs Capcom 3 game.

capcom has been doing too much of that dlc crap lately for me to be interested. i'm not buying a game when they release new costumes or stupid crap like that 2 days after the game is released. nice try...

"Capcom deserves the success more than any other developer out there." LOL, are you kidding me? Resident Evil 5 was nowhere close to great quality compared to older series titles. Yes, it was pretty...WE KNOW! The storyline was really short, can't even move and shoot, had to pay for multiplayer. Capcom deserves nothing but a "thank you" for actually releasing a new Resident Evil. Bioware deserves the success more then any other developer. They actually produce new ideas.

Capcom is just good at with they do. They no how to move into the future and not dwell in the past. They've moved there games up graphically and gameplay wise. Capcom deserves the success more than any other developer out there.

With great video game series like Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Street Fighter and other great games like Bionic Commando:Rearmed and Viewtiful Joe, is this really a surprise? What were Konami's profits? They also have some great series....

@CharlieFubar Yea I'm also not a fan of the whole DLC fiasco this gen. It just feels like they are holding back content and from what you mention they literally are.

If only they would make monster hunter on the ps3 or xbox 360. Then it would have even better graphics, and awsome online play. MH is just one of the games were you can get together with a couple of your buddies and slay monsters to kill time and have fun. I don't plan on getting it for the wii though...

I wonder what game they will work on next... Or is the port of RE 0 too much for them to make another game? Well, I really want either a new Capcom VS. game, or a new Devil May Cry. Eh, oh well.

@Raykuza MvC2 has been released on the DC, PS2, and Xbox, and now the downloadable online versions. Over an entire decade, that's not too bad. Plus, everyone was begging for it. Capcom definitely remakes their games too often (The news item today about RE:0 for the Wii is an example), but I don't think they've beaten MvC2 into the ground. And again, they made a ton of money off a decade old game that can be used to develop new games.
