Capcom has announced Devil May Cry, a new 3D action game for the Sony PlayStation 2. The executive producer of the project is Shinji Mikami, creator of Capcom's famed Resident Evil survival-horror series, and the director is Hideki Kamiya. In the game, players assume control of a character named Dante. He is a half-human, half-demon character who wields both powerful handguns and a mystical sword. According to the game's story, only he holds the power to destroy the evil that has spawned from the devil himself. Players must investigate supernatural cases like poltergeists and demon possessions in order to carry out a 2000-year-old revenge.

It looks as though Devil May Cry will be more action-oriented than Capcom's Resident Evil series, but it will also borrow heavily from that series, particularly in its imagery and plot development. The game will be released in the summer of 2001 in Japan. The US and European releases are planned for Christmas 2001.
