Capcom releases details on Sengoku Basara

Last month, industry sources reported that Capcom was developing a new game for the PlayStation 2 titled Sengoku Basara. The latest issue of Famitsu magazine has confirmed the game and has also released a few details on it. As we previously reported, Sengoku Basara is being produced by Resident Evil 4's Hiroyuki Kobayashi, and Makoto Tsuchibayashi, who worked on the original Devil May Cry, will be in charge of the character design.

Sengoku Basara will be a Dynasty Warriors-style action game, where gamers will play as one of 16 warlords from the Sengoku war period in Japan. They'll control just one warlord and fight their way through legions of foot soldiers. When they reach the end of the area, they'll engage in a one-on-one duel against the enemy warlord. Using the fights in Street Fighter II as an example, Kobayashi commented that he plans to make each battle in Sengoku Basara short enough so that the game won't take too long to play through.

The game borrows the names of historical figures, but it's fundamentally fictional, so there will be matches between warlords that have never actually met through the course of history. The objective of Sengoku Basara is to dominate the whole country by beating every warlord and taking the land they ruled over.

With the original designer of Devil May Cry hero on board, Sengoku Basara's warlords are decked out in stylish apparel. Two of the warlords confirmed for the game are Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura. Date is portrayed in the game as a cool-as-ice 19-year-old warrior who's cloaked in blue and speaks some English. Sanada, on the other hand, is portrayed as a young, hot-blooded 17-year-old fighter who's dressed in red. The historically famous warlord Oda Nobunaga will also be one of the playable characters, but details on his character are still under wraps.

Date's voice acting will be done by Kazuya Nakai (Wakka, Final Fantasy X), and Sanada's voice will be done by Souichirou Hoshi (Kilik, Soul Calibur series).

Sengoku Basara is currently 60 percent complete, according to Famitsu. The game is slated for release this summer. Images of Sengoku Basara should become available when Capcom opens the game's official site this Saturday.
