Capcom crafting Dragon's Dogma for 2012

Publisher establishing new open-world PS3, 360 series that will see players lead party on fantastical dragon hunt.

Capcom already boasts a host of original intellectual properties. Now, the creative team behind two of them, Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, is crafting an all-new IP, which the publisher announced today. Titled Dragon's Dogma, the new game will ship for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. Though not yet rated by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, Capcom said it expects the game to get an M-for-Mature label.

Dragon's Dogma is a fantastical open-world combat game that will see players fight a whole bestiary full of mythological creatures, including goblins, griffins, and hydras. Players will lead a party of three, which, judging by an early trailer for the game, will include an archer and warrior class of some sort. Players will control their primary character while their companions engage in independent action based on their experiences.

Details were thin on the overall plot of Dragon's Dogma, other than it will concern the "epic" quest to track down and slay an infamous dragon. However, Capcom did say that the game would feature hundreds of fully voiced non-player characters.

As for gameplay, Capcom said that it would be combat focused, with an emphasis on a player's reactions to a foe's attacks. Also important will be the detail makeup of items, with weight and material playing a crucial role. The game will be based on Capcom's MT Framework and sport lighting effects and graphics similar to those seen in Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5.

Looks pretty sweet! Definitely going to keep my eye on this one. I just hope it doesn't come out too early in 2012 since I'll still be busy with Skyrim!

For some reason I don't have high hopes for this game, but I really hope it proves me wrong, since it definitely sounds like the type of game I'd enjoy spending a lot of time with if it is well-made.

Cool, we never got a Monster Hunter for the PS3/360, but this is close enough. I'll keep an eye on this one.

the graphics sounds boring for a PS3/X360... Sounds like a fail, but might success just because it's Capcom's...

How open world is "open world"? That verbiage has become a catch-all phrase that has little actual meaning now. Many games *say* they're open world, but then they do so much hand-holding that it doesn't really feel like the player is truly free to go wherever, whenever like the "open world" moniker suggests. However it plays out, good for Capcom for bringing its top talent together to take a risk on a new IP. Hope it succeeds both critically and commercially.

Reminds me of Demon's Souls... and that can only be good. All my best wishes for this one Capcom!

This just came out of nowhere and slapped me in the face. The constant barrage of promising games is just overwhelming, I mean I almost fear a heart attack when E3 starts hits year.

Open world combat game with the story being, "Go kill the dragon." Um...sounds kind of like the storylines I used to dream-up for my friends while playing Dungeons and Dragons when I was ten. :) Well, I'll reserve judgment since Capcom is a pretty good developer, but I'm kind of hoping that there's a little more to this game than that. The indication of "hundreds" of fully voiced NPCs seems a little promising. (So long as they don't all sound the same like Oblivion.)

Looks promising can't wait. Capcom usually does really fluent 3rd person action games, so I know that won't be the gamebreaker.

We've come to a point where developers have gained enough celebrity to warrant highlighting them in a trailer just as you might a famous director or star in a movie trailer. Video games have certainly come a long way from Frogger!

Looks awesome. Although monsters look kinda generic. But I enjoyed Demon's Souls so if it's like that with more action, then I'm in! ^_^
