Capcom aims for more Devil May Cry in 2015

Publisher plans to reduce release cycles for sequels to 2.5 years, blames series' extended hiatus on switch to external development.

Capcom doesn't want to keep its fans waiting for more of their favorite series. The Japanese publisher today released English translations of executive comments indicating that it wants to wait no more than 2.5 years between sequels, starting with franchises like Lost Planet and Devil May Cry.

Capcom has plans for more Devil May Cry.

"We want to reduce the time needed to develop major titles from the usual three-to-four years to only 2.5 years," Capcom chairman and CEO Kenzo Tsujimoto told investors. "Speeding up development will probably raise the cost. But creating quality content will be vital to Capcom's ability to survive by overcoming intense global competition."

In his own comments, Capcom president and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto noted that Lost Planet 3 is on pace to hit the 2.5-year goal, while Resident Evil 6 is arriving some 3.5 years after its predecessor.

"For DMC Devil May Cry, development will require five years due to the time needed to select development companies because of our decision to switch to external development," Haruhiro Tsujimoto said. "But our goal is to reduce the cycle to 2.5 years for subsequent titles in this series."

Earlier this week, Capcom announced a January 15, 2013, launch date for the Ninja Theory-developed DMC: Devil May Cry. That would put a sequel to the title in summer or fall of 2015. Devil May Cry 4 was released in January of 2008.

I much preffered the reboot to the old series... And I know that that's controversial with some people... The reboot had much more character development and a better plot, it made a social commentary and the boss enemies were a lot more interesting than previous ones.... now that's not to say that every element of the game worked... but I was left more interested in the possibilities that DmC bought up for a sequel than the other games... the demon world is now in the real one, Vergil is an enemy and Sparda is presumeably still out there somewhere, Dante is also now at a stage where he can evolve into the more familiar cocksure hero from the older versions...

Id like to see dmc 6 continue neros story with dmcs gameplay... the best thing about the reboot was the fighting system

wait a minute if he is out of the demon world why the fuck make a game? that literally makes no sence at all dante would have no purpose, they should make an older version of dante meet all his other Devil may cry 1,2,3,4 and dmc devil may cry and have a death match letting you pick all of the dantes with different endings they should have devil may cry 1 vergil aka nelo angelo devil may cry 3 vergil and nelo angelo and dmc devil may cry vergil and nelo angelo fight but make the vergil a stand alone game  im sure true fans would want that

Hard to believe fans still want the old series to go on. One would think it was quite juiced out by 4. I personally feel it was a perfect time for a reboot.

Capcom should just cut off the DMC Devil May Cry storyline and just get back to the original Devil May Cry storyline. They should 1. Continue Nero's story, 2. Have a Vergil solo game with a Dante cameo, 3. Try to clean up the mess that DMC Devil May Cry caused and remake it, 4. Have a game where Dante is older than 40-50 and he gets out the demon world or continue it from there.

i don't care what they do with Dante, as long as they finally give Vergil a real in depth story, one that is equal to or greater than Dantes, the 6 episodes of dmc and the fact that in devil may cry 3 he just played through Dantes missions was very disappointing, we demand equality for the great Vergil, he has a great move set and wonderful style, but his missions are just deplorable.

we hope -all DMC fans- to see a DMC5 game. a sequel for devil may cry 4, we love to see old white haired Dante, and Nero with his magnificent sword and more funny scenes and funny dialogs from the old Dante. we really enjoyed every second of DMC3 and DMC4, and DMC5 was amazing and stunning gameplay. but some of us. I mean most of us really love the old Dante, the model, the legend son of sparda.

I think they should bring up DmC anime characters baul and Modeus in their upcoming series... it would be amazing to play with them... moreover it will bring change and interest in game...

Well they screwed up the series on ps3 and xbox 360 pretty good. Twice!

Well they actually use the real Dante this time? That would be nice.

I for one loved the western DMC, I like Japanese games but they don't hold up too well. I think the new DMC was creative, fun and original and a sequel has to happen, they can even make them separate series to please all fans

I hope the sequel is developed in Japan by Capcom. :)

I'm downloading the DmC demo now. I am very excited to try it. The first DMC was the best, by far, but 3 was awesome and 4 had great combat but some awful design decisions like that sunny outdoor level... WTF?

zfair89

I can only hope that if and when we get a DmC2 that they hand the reigns back to the DMC2/3/4 team. I don't give two shits about hair or skinny jeans. I just want a game that's as technically diverse and fluid as DMC3 and 4. I'm not against lowering the bar of entry to DMC but I hate that they don't seem to be retaining the rich combat options from the earlier games.

Gotta love how people are bashing a game that isn't even out yet...

You must be a grand master of gamming or something like that to judge a game based on videos.

Woohoo go Capcom.  Already planning a sequel and the game hasn't tanked ye- I mean isn't out yet.  That's the way to do it ;)

Ninja Theory got alot of eyes on them, CAPCOM's, old DMC producers, and of course the fans.

Let's see if they can handle the pressure.

The fact that it will take more than half a year to deliver might just be a good thing.

You can always keep polishing.

Dragdar
Dragdar

ninja theory has shirt track record but Enslaved and Heavenly sword are good games with similar styles.

How this style will mesh with  DMC, im skeptical, the fans have certain expectations if you wanna win their love as a new dev to the series.

I'm afraid the story- line will be too heavy and dry without humor , classic Dante badassery

Deingerous

is it safe to post on a DmC article, without dealing with crying fanboys talking bout hairstyles and dante's fashion yet? *reads comments* ...... Nope ..... Maybe next month

Zombanana

I bet Capcom already has the sequels AND their dlc's planned out. An obvious choice could be to put classic Dante as a skin you earn for beating the game but it will most likely be Disk-Locked-Content and is already planned.

Where the f**k is Dino Crisis!?

zantetsuken89

@taien_quinn A better plot? How exactly is the plot in DmC any different from the old games? The only real difference is the appearances of characters and Dante and Vergil being half demon half angel instead of half demon half human.

About the bosses...are you serious? You seriously think a demon with a giant fetus growing out of her and a giant demon who yelled "f*ck you" while vomiting all over the place were more interesting than bosses like Nelo Angelo, Credo, Griffon, Nevan, Lady etc (I could keep going)? Not to mention the detestable boss music. I'd have to question your tastes if that's the case.

Possibilities of a sequel? How could it be about ANYTHING else than Dante and Vergil inevitably clashing again? That's pretty much all a DmC sequel could be about. Boring.

Vergil is an enemy in the old series too. Even if they did expand upon Sparda what else could he do except be the one to try to stop Dante and Vergil from fighting each other? Not interesting at all. Dante was already cocksure from the start in DmC but in a way more volatile and gross manner (I guess some fanboys would say he's "realistic") compared to the classic Dante. Really, all he did was remind me of a generic hooligan. And don't get me started on Vergil's god complex.

It's your opinion and you're allowed to have it, but I strongly disagree with everything you said.

xOmniCloudx
xOmniCloudx

@Arsonaire How was it juiced out when there was still plenty of unsolved plot threads started by DMC4 itself and room to expand the gameplay judging by Bayonetta? DMC5 could have easily been the major swansong of the series. I think Resident Evil needs a reboot much more. Namely, the series is in shambles with a huge identity crisis and just how many times can they keep using the same characters to fight the next big bio-weapon threat?

zantetsuken89
zantetsuken89

@Arsonaire You must be completely joking. I find it hard to believe fans actually want the reboot to keep going considering how awful it was when compared to the originals. I personally feel the reboot should never even have happened and we should have gotten DMC 5 instead of the failure we got.

keife191
keife191

@snigdhanil they also screwed up on dantes mother, you reminded me when you mentioned trish, as she was his mothers doppelganger, shouldnt dantes pathetic mother in dmc have been the wonderful trish from devil may cry? the entire story of trish and dante was that she was made to be a perfect copy of his mother, but trish was blonde, hot, and dominant, while dantes mother in dmc was red headed and kind of pathetic if you saw her in vergils downfall. and she was human not an angel, dante was half human half demon, thats why he had the powers of a demon but the values of a human. dante an vergil were nephilim (demon-human or angel-human) with the power to defy the Gods

@raiden-mgr i found dmc 3 and 4 boring... and not very funny so i dunno where you got that from i prefer new dante ..it actually feels like a fun game

samson300

@zfair89 wow all that from a demo? i personally think you should wait for the full product before you talk about fluidity and technical diversity. and as a demo you cant expect for them to make all weapons and combats available.

@fightingfish18 this game is going to sell, might not sell as much as COD but it will be good enough for a sequel.

I agree, completely man. I am sorely disappointed with Capcom's way of marketing and choice in direction anymore. Resident Evil 6 hopefully is the end to Resident Evil...let it die nicely. Well it'll be the end for me most likely on Resi games. I do not wish to partake in another Operation. @Legrieme

@Deingerous Did it ever hit you that Dante's looks is the least of most fans worries?

taien_quinn

The new plot centred around a cabal of demons who had already seized power. They were insidious and the plot became an allegory for political corruption vs. free will. Dante is a hooligan at the start of the game but undergoes an evolution into a freedom fighter, a person with a strong moral compass. The game questions our own society and the freedoms we surrender to others for the benefits of being in a modern society and questions the labels society throws at those who lash out at the system and whether even in a democracy the common man ever truly wields any power. The original series had a very generic video game plot: Demon lord must be beaten by the one man who can... both its villains and Dante were pretty 1 dimensional. That's not to say that they were bad. I loved the original games: they had some great design particularly the bosses and most of the weapons in those games were vastly superior to the ones DmC gave us but those bosses were for the main just plonked in as elemental level enders that would give Dante a new weapon rather than fleshing them out to have a wider purpose in the plot.

Dante is 'cool' to the point of being callous in the older games and is rarely emotional unlike the new Dante who is very much an emotionally driven character. Both versions are cocky but the older Dante is cocky in a way that hides his real feelings whereas new Dante wears them openly by the end of the game. From a storytelling perspective that makes new Dante more interesting because we get to see under his facade which we never really see in the older games.

Devil may cry 4 in particular while still being an amazing game was forced into even more convoluted ideas in order to keep the plot going...

DmC on the other hand as I said still has Vergil and Sparda... we don't know how those characters will play out... Sparda the demon who has lost everything and whose sons have unleashed limbo on the world seems like a better villain to introduce to me... Then there is the question of a demon (or even human) power struggle to replace Mundus. Vergil needn't be the main antagonist though he could easily have a role to play in the sequel. Remember both brothers still have their amulets which is an obvious pointer to future games forcing them to work together or fight again in order to introduce force edge and its transformation into the sparda sword. Then there is the question of how humans will deal with the demons openly appearing in our world... will some use it as an opportunity to ascend like Arkham and the saviour or will we see humans using devil arms like Nero? And how will ninja theory use those ideas to continue its social commentary?

zantetsuken89
zantetsuken89

@Arsonaire @jwash66 I actually completely agree with jwash66. Especially the part about a Vergil solo game.
What exactly does the reboot have to offer that the original DMC can't? All I can see in the future for DmC is more Donte vs Vergil in Vergil's attempt to rule humanity and I find that premise dreadfully dull. In comparison DMC has a lot more to offer and jwash66 already listed A FEW of the possibilites they could use for DMC 5 and future games. That and continuing the original DMC games will yield in more money for Capcom seeing as DmC didn't even make target sales, which says a lot.

I like how you don't even bother to elaborate and instead just type out "You must be completely joking" because you have nothing else to offer in terms of counterargument.

Well, I think you played dmc3 & 4 and the new dmc at the same time, for other gamers who play dmc3 and dmc4 at their first launch they like both of them, and hated the changes that came with the new dmc.

@danp111 @raiden-mgr the game was boring, the old concept idea was better, thanks to fans like you they changed the dmc devil may cry, 3 different times and blew a whole bunch of money on making the game fit the so called "fans" needs

@samson300  @Eraldus Gotta love how people bashing a game that isn't out yet? Uhh... What do you think trailers, live videos of gameplay, playing the demo, and evidence of issues with the game being shown all throughout Youtube are for? You think the company just make these advertisements, gameplay vids, and demos for their health? I've played the demo and it doesn't have a Devil May Cry feel. It's a good action game, but it doesn't stack to the potential that Devil May Cry 3, hell not even Devil May Cry 4. Of course the demo has glitches. No demo is glitch free. No demo is 100%. But that doesn't mean that the glitches found within the game is going to be fixed within 2months. Sorry, but i'm tired of seeing these same excuses from people. They support a game that they don't know is going to be good and even when people have played the demo and make their impressions on the game and express any negativity about the demo, it becomes a "Wait until the full game is out" when before the demo is was "Wait for the demo, then make your judgments." It feels like Heavenly Sword, of course because it's from Ninja Theory, but even Bayonetta played very similar to Devil May Cry even though it was made by Platinum Games under the direction of the original director of DMC. Again, the game is okay for an action game, but if it's trying to refresh the series and try to become the savior of the DMC series, then No, it's not going to go well.

@TheSnowmanSaint  @Legrieme you are all talking about letting something die in peace. they created the franchise, therefore they can do whatever the hell they want with it. plus resident evil 6 is a great game. if you want the old boring resident evil back then dust off your ps1 and start playing.
