Capcom aims for more Devil May Cry in 2015

Publisher plans to reduce release cycles for sequels to 2.5 years, blames series' extended hiatus on switch to external development.

by

Capcom doesn't want to keep its fans waiting for more of their favorite series. The Japanese publisher today released English translations of executive comments indicating that it wants to wait no more than 2.5 years between sequels, starting with franchises like Lost Planet and Devil May Cry.

Capcom has plans for more Devil May Cry.

"We want to reduce the time needed to develop major titles from the usual three-to-four years to only 2.5 years," Capcom chairman and CEO Kenzo Tsujimoto told investors. "Speeding up development will probably raise the cost. But creating quality content will be vital to Capcom's ability to survive by overcoming intense global competition."

In his own comments, Capcom president and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto noted that Lost Planet 3 is on pace to hit the 2.5-year goal, while Resident Evil 6 is arriving some 3.5 years after its predecessor.

"For DMC Devil May Cry, development will require five years due to the time needed to select development companies because of our decision to switch to external development," Haruhiro Tsujimoto said. "But our goal is to reduce the cycle to 2.5 years for subsequent titles in this series."

Earlier this week, Capcom announced a January 15, 2013, launch date for the Ninja Theory-developed DMC: Devil May Cry. That would put a sequel to the title in summer or fall of 2015. Devil May Cry 4 was released in January of 2008.

Well they screwed up the series on ps3 and xbox 360 pretty good. Twice!

Well they actually use the real Dante this time? That would be nice.

I for one loved the western DMC, I like Japanese games but they don't hold up too well. I think the new DMC was creative, fun and original and a sequel has to happen, they can even make them separate series to please all fans

I hope the sequel is developed in Japan by Capcom. :)

I'm downloading the DmC demo now. I am very excited to try it. The first DMC was the best, by far, but 3 was awesome and 4 had great combat but some awful design decisions like that sunny outdoor level... WTF?

I can only hope that if and when we get a DmC2 that they hand the reigns back to the DMC2/3/4 team. I don't give two shits about hair or skinny jeans. I just want a game that's as technically diverse and fluid as DMC3 and 4. I'm not against lowering the bar of entry to DMC but I hate that they don't seem to be retaining the rich combat options from the earlier games.

Gotta love how people are bashing a game that isn't even out yet...

You must be a grand master of gamming or something like that to judge a game based on videos.

reduce time? that sounds like an xcellent idea.

Ninja Theory got alot of eyes on them, CAPCOM's, old DMC producers, and of course the fans.

Let's see if they can handle the pressure.

The fact that it will take more than half a year to deliver might just be a good thing.

You can always keep polishing.

ninja theory has shirt track record but Enslaved and Heavenly sword are good games with similar styles.

How this style will mesh with  DMC, im skeptical, the fans have certain expectations if you wanna win their love as a new dev to the series.

I'm afraid the story- line will be too heavy and dry without humor , classic Dante badassery

is it safe to post on a DmC article, without dealing with crying fanboys talking bout hairstyles and dante's fashion yet? *reads comments* ...... Nope ..... Maybe next month

I bet Capcom already has the sequels AND their dlc's planned out. An obvious choice could be to put classic Dante as a skin you earn for beating the game but it will most likely be Disk-Locked-Content and is already planned.

If we're asking Capcom for reboots, I'm asking for Onimusha!!!

They're going to make a sequel to DmC?? Without knowing the sales yet? BS! I'm boycotting Capcom. I hate that ******* company.

never liked nero, a disfigured dante is still better than some new-comer being in the spotlight.

We want challenging DMC!

Harder than DMC 4, harder and more fun than DMC 3!

Hell, harder than Dark Souls!!

Wow really that long since DMC4. If DMC botch this one like Ninja Gaiden 3, then I would have to say good bye to DMC. They got too much time already. Hope Nija Theory deliver the goods

I find it hard to believe that you can cut development time in half and actually improve on quality let alone maintain the same quality.  Unless the increase in cost is due to hiring twice the staff to work around the clock.

Can't believe it has been 5 years since DMC4... And dmc 4 is still an awesome and beautifully looking game.

As I've heard; in DMC's story Dante trapped into a mad world and he's looks changed in that world. Dante didn't changed completely. you'll see real Dante in game.

Just bring Nero back, and I will be happy.

Can't wait to get my hand on his Devil Bringer again..

Oh joy... so what you're saying, Capcom, is "let's not create sequels to beloved franchises because the creative spark is there and we believe that we can now do something special with the series, let's create games on rigid cycles to maximize profit for investors instead." What a GREAT idea, Capcom. :(

 @zfair89 wow all that from a demo? i personally think you should wait for the full product before you talk about fluidity and technical diversity. and as a demo you cant expect for them to make all weapons and combats available.

 @fightingfish18 this game is going to sell, might not sell as much as COD but it will be good enough for a sequel.

I agree, completely man. I am sorely disappointed with Capcom's way of marketing and choice in direction anymore. Resident Evil 6 hopefully is the end to Resident Evil...let it die nicely. Well it'll be the end for me most likely on Resi games. I do not wish to partake in another Operation. @Legrieme

Nero was bad ass but this new DMC takes place before the events of DMC 3, I believe, as this is supposed to be a much younger Dante, he wouldnt meet Nero for years to come.

 @samson300  @Eraldus Gotta love how people bashing a game that isn't out yet? Uhh... What do you think trailers, live videos of gameplay, playing the demo, and evidence of issues with the game being shown all throughout Youtube are for? You think the company just make these advertisements, gameplay vids, and demos for their health? I've played the demo and it doesn't have a Devil May Cry feel. It's a good action game, but it doesn't stack to the potential that Devil May Cry 3, hell not even Devil May Cry 4. Of course the demo has glitches. No demo is glitch free. No demo is 100%. But that doesn't mean that the glitches found within the game is going to be fixed within 2months. Sorry, but i'm tired of seeing these same excuses from people. They support a game that they don't know is going to be good and even when people have played the demo and make their impressions on the game and express any negativity about the demo, it becomes a "Wait until the full game is out" when before the demo is was "Wait for the demo, then make your judgments." It feels like Heavenly Sword, of course because it's from Ninja Theory, but even Bayonetta played very similar to Devil May Cry even though it was made by Platinum Games under the direction of the original director of DMC. Again, the game is okay for an action game, but if it's trying to refresh the series and try to become the savior of the DMC series, then No, it's not going to go well.

samson300
samson300

 @TheSnowmanSaint  @Legrieme you are all talking about letting something die in peace. they created the franchise, therefore they can do whatever the hell they want with it. plus resident evil 6 is a great game. if you want the old boring resident evil back then dust off your ps1 and start playing.

 @gamekingpin

LOL ! wouldn't that be cheesy but cool if young Dante meets child Nero?

I mean think of it, Nero as a small child, with the nasty devil bringer arm!!

(I know it makes little sense but still it's awesome!)

GunEye
GunEye

 @gamekingpin

Yes it is.

But on the other hand, I guess Nero was also some kind of a change to the formula.

I am just sad that the series didn't continue with him, and I do hope that we will see him in the next DMC, hopefully, developed by DMC 4 producers and not ninja theory.

Why? not because I don't give DMC (ninja's) a credit, it can work, but if anyone should continue with Nero's story, it should be the original producers.

Holding my fingers corssed here.

@AkuScorn

You know I kind of thought about that but was not sure.  I dont know if thats a bad or good thing.  Guess we will have to wait and find out.  Its always scary when developers mess with a formula that already works so well instead of just perfecting it.

GunEye
GunEye

 @AkuScorn Not news, and not quite true.

Yes it is a reboot, but no, it is before DMC 3, which chronically is the eariliest of Dantes adventures.

But the developers of "DMC" specifically said that the event of this story, will be the trail of passage that will lead to the Dante we know today.

Meaning that maybe, in they end of DMC Dante will retain his carefree, teasing style.

Hopefully.

GunEye

 @gamekingpin My thoughts as well.

Nero is my favorite action character ever. From his strength, to his personality and to his voice actor.

I hope that when and if DMC 5  (and I mean after this DMC) will arrive - it will pick up when and where Nero left it.

I still hope this DMC will deliver to goods.

AkuScorn
AkuScorn

Bad news. It's not before DMC3, it's  a reboot. This has no connection to the old games. @gamekingpin

gamekingpin

 @GunEye That would be crazy, although now Im thinking of a DMC that follow Nero's story.. I mean they took the time to create a powerful character that not only can match Dantes combat but that Devil Arm was a game changer. it would be a shame if we never saw him in another game.
