Capcom addressing Lost Planet text issue

Publisher responds to complaints about font size in sci-fi shooter's multiplayer demo, promises final version will make adjustments for standard-definition TVs.

by

When Capcom released its multiplayer demo for the sci-fi shooter Lost Planet over the Xbox Live Marketplace on Thanksgiving, some gamers were left less than thankful for the publisher's decision to tailor in-game text for viewers with high-definition TVs. A common complaint from those with standard-definition sets was that the font size Capcom used for information like the onscreen rankings was too small to make out clearly in standard resolutions.

Side-by-side comparison of old and new Lost Planet text.

Today the publisher announced that it will address the issue before the final game ships in January.

"Capcom is listening and taking our community to heart," a Capcom representative said, adding, "We have noticed the recent concern about the text size in Lost Planet for SDTV users, in particular the 'Elimination' mode of the multiplayer game where players' scores are displayed on the top left of the screen. We want to assure gamers that we have already implemented a solution for text display in Elimination, which will be reflected in the final game (although it's unfortunately not in the demo)."

According to the representative, the final version of the game will automatically detect if the user is playing on a standard-definition set, and will adjust the font size on the Elimination mode's score display accordingly.

Capcom is also tweaking the way players are given their next objectives in the single-player game. The game will issue orders to players vocally as well as in text, and players can use the in-game PDA to refresh their memories on current objectives should they forget.

Lost Planet is rated T for Teen and is scheduled for release on January 12, 2007. For more information, check out GameSpot's latest hands-on impressions.

If you have a good CRT monitor, you can get all the way up to 1080p resolutions without a problem. I used a ViewSonic p225f and have my Xbox 360 resolution all the way up to 1920x1080... same as 1080p. And it looks G R E A T!!!

FIX DEAD RISING for CHRIST SAKE! and my friend sake as well.. he doesn't own an HDTV and Dead Rising is his main reason for wanting to buy a 360... I brought it over to his house to play it and he and his wife couldn't read the text at all... A new version of Dead Rising should be released with larger text for people stuck with an older TV

For the people saying "They don't have to buy a HDTV" well I hate to break it to ya, but you made a concious decision to go out and buy an HD-era system and then expect them to cater to you specifically. If you don't have an HDTV, hook it up to your monitor. I can afford a mid-range HDTV with every paycheck I get(After lease, car payment, insurance, food, ect..). If you are too poor to move up to HD, then you had no buisness really buying a next-gen system in the first place. You obviously can't afford such luxuries and should problably focus on getting some cash-flow going.

Yes! Standard definition-readable text. Looks nice. Now release a patch for Dead Rising.

Everyone is talking about Dead Rising's font on HDTVs, but what do you guys think about Lost Planet? I've got a 56 inch HDTV and I still thought it was hard to tell the score in Lost Planet. I could tell where I was on the ranking (based on yellow text vs. white text), but I couldn't make out names or score. They should consider increasing the overall font size (as long as it doesn't negatively impact the player's view). Or just opt for pulling up the scores with the BACK Button.

That is good to hear they are going to fix that. They were hard to see.

Good to hear Capcom's "is listening and taking their community to heart". But seeing how they needed to be told something this obvious, I guess I should tell them some other things to be taken to heart, such as: Be sure the game doesn't freeze randomly. Verify that the controls work. Check that the game music hasn't been accidentally replaced with backwards polka. Don't hestitate to add your own, guys. Remember, Capcom is relying on us to point out everything, so their QA people don't have to think of it themselves.

whiteiraqi- i would have to agree with sam lowery on this one. Since I live in Japan i can assure you that 75 percent of the population has hdtv. The 25 percent that dont are mainly the elderly or those who dont care about gaming or pc. And since all of the major television networks are required by law to change ALL of their programing to digital HD. I can most assuredly tell you we are all enjoying our hdtv. I wont even respond to your math comment. Simple solution to all of this. If you want to enjoy next gen gaming get a hdtv! DUH! having one without the other just doesnt make much sense. And befor somebody says " I cant afford one" WORK HARD! PLAY HARD! STAY HARD!

gcoomer your exactly right, i just got dead rising and am playing it now and find on my 51" 1080i tv the text can be hard to see from the couch. It makes me feel like capcom is thinking there making these games for pc, where text size wouldn't be that big of a deal concidering you would be on top of the monitor. Capcom needs to realize that the text should be much bigger. This is such a stupid problem for a great video game company's to have. Hell deadrising's gotten to the point anytime words come on the screen i ignore them!!

now Capcom's gotta make a patch for Dead Rising. I don't know about you guys but i'm not gonna spend $1000 on a new TV because Microsoft wants me to upgrade. i'll do it in my own time. i'm not a fool. i'm not going to go run out and buy the new Akon CD just because the TV tells me to! i wonder how many of you kids will just buy anything anyone tells you too. i wonder how many of you kids on this board: a: actually paid for your HDTV out of your OWN pocket and not your mom/dad's b: have wealthy parents c: live in their Mom's basement rent-free and say "go buy an HDTV loser!" oh, and Sam_Lowery: i only know 1 person out of the 50 or so i know in Japan that has an HDTV. have you ever even been to Japan? i guess everyone there gets all a++'s in Math and are nuclear scientists too!

At least they take into account what their players are asking for, and not just ignore their user base (like Sony is doing). :D

I got a VGA cable too, so I could use my monitor for 1280x1024 output. It doesn't even compare now.. I can't believe the difference. Now I feel like I'm playing a true next gen console. In stead of your next game go grab one for $40 and a 'descent' monitor, you'll love it! Test Drive Unlimited is so much more fun, now that I see the countryside scream by in high def.

The text in Dead Rising even on a HDTV was small---they needed to fix this....oh and hopefully this game can be at least 2 times better than Dead Rising as that game was wayyyyyyyyyyyy overated

I'm using my VGA monitor since I couldn't read the text on my SD TV. It's a good thing that the developers care about those who still usa SD TV's since it is quite a few. Escpecially on markets where HD TV's are still very expensive, like in Europe.

Dead rising forced me to get an HDTV. I thought it was a marketing ploy to get me to upgrade my tv set. Eh, they should do this LOL... would be vicious though lol.

Did anyone else think some of the text was still a little small on an HDTV? I mean, I didn't have any trouble reading it and it might have been just the fact that my HDTV is kinda small, but it sure was smaller than what I was used to.

Flat_Line_____
Flat_Line_____

If you have a true HD monitor/tv there is no reason you wouldnt be able to read any text, even as smaller than it was in the demo... If you do, you either have a problem with your HDTV or your eyes lol... And I am being serious when I say that.... HD at 720p or 1080i/p should be VERY clear and sharp, allowing you to see things much much better than a SDTV shows them. I personally just got a 20.1" LCD widescreen flatpanel last blackfriday for 199, and it pulls off HD stunningly... The prices have come down alot Just go buy a nice PC monitor, instead of buying a stupid HDTV that is the same thing just with speakers and a TV Tuner -.- (Windows Vista has this built in on functionality, you just gotta get a 30-40.00 TV Tuner for it)... =========================================================== Yeah, I have a PC monitor and for sound a logitech 5.1 setup,it's friggin awsome lol it's only a 17" but man it is still great looking. Like you said though 30-40$ for the vga cables and a good size monitor and you are good to go and for MUCH less. I am going to pick up a 20+ inch monitor for christmas this year. And the thing I have noticed between PC monitors and HD tv's are that the monitor keeps it's clarity and brightness no matter what angle you stand or sit in front of it at ;)

the game wasnt that great anyway, all u had to was pick up the rifle if u were on red team and pick people off. I just finished a match and ended with 5687 points, the next highest was 745. I was 14 and 4 and used only the sniper. Its a one hit kill thats way too easy to aim. this game is not gonna be worth buying, let alone renting even

Look, if you had a problem knowing what to do next in Dead Rising then you should use the map screen. Honestly, who's gonna stop in a game where there are zombies all around you and a timer constantly going so you can read text? I'm sad that they didn't use voices for the messages in Dead Rising and am glad they will use voices in Lost Planet. And they probably can't fix the problem in Dead Rising because it would require something that wasn't even in the retail version, alternate text and a program to check your TV and change it. At least they are learning from their mistakes since I'm betting they had already fixed the text long ago after the complaints in Dead Rising.

Yousefer

I guess Capcom doesn't care about consumers who have already bought a broken game. Because gamers have already given them money for Dead Rising, what's the point of fixing the game now? I expect this sort of behavior from EA, but not from Capcom.

Where is the fix for Dead Rising Capcom? How do you overlook the size of text?! Honestly, I loved Dead Rising, but it seemed like so ridiculous to overlook such an annoyance. Maybe they only have 42' TVs at Capcom.

I'm sure this is a new challenge for console programmers who have been able to assume one set of hardware, one resolution for all their games. Still, detecting between standard- and high-definition doesn't come close to the complexity of multiple resolutions and myriad graphical options that PC game makers have to manage.

Simple solution. Options > Text Size > Small/Medium/Large. Am I right, or am I right?
