Canceled Star Wars projects revealed

New report reveals cross-platform multiplayer game Smuggler, FarmVille-esque Outpost, and iOS game Death Star.

In the wake of LucasArts' closure earlier this year, new details on canceled Star Wars projects have come to light. Kotaku reports today, citing a number of sources familiar with the matter, that the studio canned multiple games in a variety of genres.

One of the projects was Smuggler, a cross-platform multiplayer game that was reportedly going to allow users to play as a customizable character within the Star Wars universe, "smuggling and trading between Facebook, tablets, and consoles."

Another reportedly canceled game was Outpost, a Star Wars version of Zynga's popular social game FarmVille, allowing players to build empires. A third game--Death Star for iOS--was to put players in control of the Empire's iconic hulking space ship, though no other details were provided.

In addition to canceled games, LucasArts was reportedly planning to launch its own spin on Electronic Arts' download service Origin. This LucasArts-owned network was said to be planned as a means to help the studio distribute Star Wars games and assist in the completion of in-app purchases.

One source said this service was scheduled to launch alongside Star Wars: First Assault, the previously revealed multiplayer-focused online game, which would have included a microtransaction store of some kind.

These games were all connected as part of a larger LucasArts ecosystem before being canceled, people with knowledge of the matter said. Cancellations are not atypical in the industry, but LucasArts reportedly canceled games that were nearly completed. For example, Kotaku reports that Death Star and Outpost had already gone through QA testing when they were canned.

"Projects get canceled all the time," one source said. "You'd hope that your process can identify problem projects before they're finished.

Also in the report, it was revealed that a Day of the Tentacle remake was in development. Though it was supposedly never officially greenlit, one person familiar with the game said it was 80 percent complete.

sell off star wars to disney is the biggest mistakes George Lucas ever made in his entire life. EA going to ruin Star Wars games, Disney gonna make  Starwars story even boring

Not surprised. Lucasarts was f**ked ever since Disney got their hands on it.

Open world Kotor 3. Let Rockstar make it Disney. Don't let EA touch it!!

Why the f* would they cancel a game that is 80% complete? It would have cost them almost nothing to complete it and sell it. Surely, they would not lose more money by doing that..

i forgot  the name of it but you were the clone soldiers and it was a first person game, they should make a sequel of it

In my mind's eye, "Star Wars: Smuggler" is the natural progression of Sid Mierer's Pirates!

Open world Smuggling game. With tactical 3rd person ship to ship combat, like in XvT.

...that's a game I really want.

wow Disney comes in and shits on everything. That's the problem when companies get sold. Something that was important to one is not important to the other. All the games that got cut, and employees that got fired.  At least dice is still doing Battlefront, hopefully.

I'm still waiting for the live action TV series George Lucas talked about that was going to focus on the time when Darth Vader roamed the galaxy hunting down the remaining Jedi. How does something that sounds so good never happen?

These games all seemed like shitty mobile games. It's probably better they were cancelled anyways, just not in the last mile of development.

Glad KOTOR 3 was never canned. We might get it one day, and hopefully it will ignore the absolute ruination of Revan's story which TOR MMO introduced.

@tomservo51 I hope we can see an open world KotOR 3 too. It would be awesome if they added action and tactical fighting mechanics like in DA: Inquisition

@ddoggbritt16 Republic Commando! That's an AWESOME game! If there is one pure squad-based FPS Star Wars game that should ever get a remake/sequel, it's this one, outstanding stuff! I wasn't too hot on the idea of an Imperial Commando sequel idea they had in the works at some point, maybe the SPOILER "lost" red guy could work for the rebel alliance and hunt down the other guys with his own squad, would be awesome.

@Stressthesky

It is hard to read for me too. It is real shame it won't see completion.

However it is more of LA fault.  How came, the only game mentioned, that has sparked an interest among comments, is a remake of a classic title from 90s?

The golden era of LA was long gone, when they were bought out by Disney.

@F22_King_Raptor There will not have a Republic Commando sequel, the closest thing you will get are the books written by Karen Traviss (Republic Commando: Hard Contact, Triple Zero, True Colors, Order 66 and 501st). they are amazing btw.

@chronocommander @themc_7 wow thanks. That's a great article. Sad to see a studio like that go down because upper management couldn't make decisions and never wanted to take a risk. Risks that would've made great games.

@Deadlysyns87 @timthegem The books are full of nonsense. Wait for Episode VII to see all the stupid things you've read that were wasting your time...

ninjaroach81
ninjaroach81

@chronocommander That, and the fact when you told them to do something, the squad actually did it really well, and they were really good about reviving you if you went down!  The only bad thing I remember from the game was it was too damn short!

chronocommander
chronocommander

@ninjaroach81 @chronocommander Yeah, and your squadmates actually had a personality expressed in the gameplay, a far cry from the super scripted scenes with one dimensional characters we have in many cover shooters these days! Those moments when you manage to clear out the room before your squad fires a single shot and instead of standing around like nothing happened one of them goes "Your skill is an inspiration to us all", epic, freaking epic! Nothing quite like it that I've played before or since. Glad to see there are still fans of this great game out there!

chronocommander
chronocommander

@themc_7 @chronocommander Seriously, and for a studio with such a stellar track record too! Ah well, hopefully now the studios interested in doing justice to these franchises can, let's see how things evolve, new era in console gaming after all!
