Call of Duty Online begins alpha test in China

Activision 2012 financial report states that releasing game in other regions "would be very relevant."

Activision has released a new trailer for Call of Duty Online, which states that the China-based PC game's alpha phase will start on April 30.

This version of Call of Duty will be set in the Modern Warfare timeline.

The new trailer shows off maps and features alpha testers will be experiencing. Players will get to play on maps called Storm, Crash Tropical, Bog, Desert Border, Underpass, and Estate Tropical.

The game modes on this build are Kill Confirmed, a standard team deathmatch mode where collecting dog tags from dead opponents net a team points. Story missions will also be available; players will have to form a team and complete objectives ranging from capturing enemy informants to surviving waves of enemy soldiers.

In addition, an Activision 2012 financial report said that Call of Duty Online may be released outside of China (via Seeking Alpha). Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said that there are other regions where the game would be relevant, but did not announce plans at this point in time.

Call of Duty Online has been in development for two years and is set in the Modern Warfare timeline. Chinese internet provider Tencent will be publishing the game in the country.

Man, I wish I was able to play CoD over the internet with others as well :(

Battlefield and Ghost Recon  have had their versions out for a long while now, I was surprised that CoD didn't have an online version of their own. Even Crytek is getting in on this with Warface.

Just goes to show you how wack the COD engine is. If DICE had to do this for what I hope will be a new Frostbite engine running underneath the hood of BF4 i'd understand but for this??? Come on!

I don't get it. China wasn't able to play MW1, MW2 and MW3? What's the point of mixing existing maps and call it a different COD game? They have been working on it for 2 years? The models, maps and modes are already done, they just had to mix it. I guess they are very low on manpower to spend so much time on not creating anything new, my bet is about 3-5 people working on this whole title.

I might play if it comes in America and some of my friends play it, but it really just seems to be more of the crap that MW3 was judging from the screenshot. It would be cool if the game was closer to MW1.

Looks like a combination of MW2 & MW3, there must be tons of micro transactions.

I'd like to see two Call of Duty titles a year too. That way I can have the satisfaction of ignoring two horrible games instead of just one!

@StotheG China most likely wasn't. Consoles have been banned in the country for years. I think recently the 360 was allowed in but that was only in the last year. So unless a Chinese distributor picked up the PC versions then no they haven't been able to play them. This is a free to play online PC game. The idea is to let the Chinese play the game while avoiding the rampant piracy of the country. So the two years were probably spent building the infrastructure that will let them have all the F2P elements.

@DomZeal It's F2P so I would be pretty shocked if there weren't.

@Printul_Noptii Not quite. If you tune it up to 720p, you'll see that textures have their details set to low. I can't help but to imagine this is the maximum amount of detail. God have mercy on the millions of slaves that will play this on a regular daily basis.

@CincoToes @weschik If Dice was using Frostbite 2 for BF4, i'd understand cuz it still looks amazing but the screen shot above looks like a still grab from COD 2

@commando1992 @Printul_Noptii Actually this is a free to play game. So you don't have to spend $60 up front. You just have to spend $500 to actually do well. You know like most Chinese "games".

@commando1992 @Printul_Noptii no fockin way if they dont drop the crappy matchmaking for the PC version and dont give us dedicated servers back this game can have the best graphics out there which will melt my eyes away I still wont buy it. I just wish they would finally release a CoD with the MP in the veins of CoD2 and CoD4MW.
