Call of Duty: Ghosts on PS4 is 720p without day-one patch

Activision to release day-one patch for retail version of Infinity Ward's latest shooter that improves native resolution.

PlayStation 4 versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts purchased at retail will run in 720p until users download a day-one patch that improves the native resolution for single-player, an Activision representative told Eurogamer today.

The launch-day patch will make the game's single-player campaign output at native 1080p. Without it, the campaign would be upscaled to the higher resolution. The game's multiplayer will run in 1080p out of the box without the update.

An Activision representative told Eurogamer that a "configuration issue" is to blame.

"There was a configuration issue in the retail version on single-player mode only," the representative said. "This has been addressed with a day one software update. People will be able to download the day one update when PlayStation 4 launches in their territory and play at native 1080p."

Meanwhile, the Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts will run natively in 720p, upscaled to 1080p. Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida told GameSpot this week that developers aim for 1080p for practical reasons.

"I don't think any team is just fixated on 1080p, it's just one of the options...but [1080p] games allow you to be more precise and a better gamer," Yoshida said. "That's clearly the benefit."

Call of Duty: Ghosts was released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U last week. Activision sold more than $1 billion worth of the game to retailers in 24 hours. The shooter will be released for PS4 and Xbox One at launch.

Will Gamespot do a freaking story on the XBox only doing 720 vs PS4 1080??? Is it just an issue with ghosts, or will people be playing 720 for the next 6 years?

Seems like kind of a big deal. Or is MS paying them to bury it?

so the game is so rushed that the guys didn't even properly tested the graphics settings before shiping.

man COD has become such a huge golden milking cow!

It has been for the past half a decade.

@55584623 @Sardinar I would have to say that BF4 also dropped the ball in the last release.  I have so many problems having a stable game, server issues, poor spawn setup(spawn right next to an enemy who kills you) level design is not as polished as BF3

I traded in my Call of Duty Ghosts for a PS4 camera tonight.  The game is bad and gets worse the more you play it. They really did nothing but slap a new coat of paint on MW3 and ruin the leveling system.

Infinity Ward will kill the franchise if they are allowed to make another game for the series.

@Alecmrhand Please post a mini review with a bit more detail. I'm keen on the game but I'm interested to hear what proper gamers say about it first.

Total_mischief

@ACWH You should probably rent it if you think you might be interested in the game. Personally I thought the singleplayer campaign was one of the worst to ever see the light of day in a shooter. Inconsistencies, the vilain is about as believable as a hammerhead falcon riding a unicorn and the characters are forgettable at best, dog included. The multiplayer is just more ridiculous with the addition of yet more perks that make skill less and less relevant to success. It also looks terrible on 7th gen and, if the screens and videos are any indication, does nothing to boast the hardware of the 8th gen and PC.

Infinity Ward is bad and Ghosts is the final absolute proof of that.

If you bought this game for the existing consoles - why buy it for the new ones? This COD is the worst version so far.

I've been into Xbox since it's first console but it looks like this time it's time to make the switch. I am getting a game console for gaming, not to watch TV.

I'm getting a monitor for my next gen console, 24 or 27 inch guys?

@parissuleyman anything crt is the tits. Also anything with rabbit ears is the tits, and maybe one of those hand-cranked tvs, those are the tits.

@parissuleyman 27 might be too big. I use a 24" at work (Samsung) and no TV can compare if honest. If you have the room and budget get the 27". My monitor is a SyncMaster SA850 and I can't recommend it enough!

Let's face it.. lots of these games for Xbone and PS4 will be upscaled.  Once again, they're trying to fabricate this FULL 1080p crap.  It will be another generation until we'll get 60fps, full 1080p.  Hell, some of these games are already being capped at 30fps like Dead Rising 3 and the developers excuse was that.. "at 30fps, it captures the combat better."  Bullsh!t and more of it.  Don't believe everything you read, hear, and see.

RabbiSchmuley
RabbiSchmuley

@r_ruiz6047 @Elann2008  can't say I prefer pc games....actually I prefer emulating on pc...like nes/snes/gens/gameboy.. actual pc exclusive games are lackluster in a lot of ways, even technologically...not saying the graphics aren't better, and obvious performance differences...but there are no more of those experiments in persistent environments like we (I, personally) were expecting after the release of half-life 2.

not_wanted

If it's native 1080p, MP and SP then how the fuck does it even run in 720p or should I say why this res exists on the PS4 version? This isn't the PC version, or maybe now you can change resolution in games on these next gen games.

I think by releasing the patch they  just want to see exactly how many people bought/play their shitty game. :P

Rusteater
Rusteater

It's hard to believe that we're still talking about 720p on next gen systems. These new games should all be 1080p without question.

Elann2008
Elann2008

@Rusteater

That's what we want, but I never expected it to be.  Not on that hardware.  It's really not hard to believe.  We were/are getting upscaled 720p games this gen, lots of games hovering in the 500p range.  There's no way they doubled that with this weak hardware, and claim 60 frames per second, with improved graphics.  Not gonna happen mate.

I'm on the fence about whether the promotion to buy current-gen and upgrade to next-gen for $10 is a good deal for me or not...hmm...

PlatinumPaladin

Shouldn't Activision have come out with this little detail a few days ago when all hell was breaking loose about this very issue? I know as far as problems go this is a fairly insignificant one, but surely then was the time to bring it up. I can only assume the patch perhaps wasn't ready until now.

If I purchase the PS4 version, does anyone know if I could play with my friends that have it on the PS3?

jedifox

@artmann420 No, there is no PS3/PS4 cross play for this game. PS3/PS4 cross play is only possible if the game developers allow it. Activision does not allow it for this game. Sorry.

On a game like COD does it really matter that much if its running 720 or 1080. I mean you are running around and stuff is blowing up everywhere, its not like this is an Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age where you are walking around and you are taking in the scenery etc.

@xenonbox

yes... its sonys job to warn you that activision made a configuration mistake.... you aren't to bright are you?

RobDev
RobDev

@xenonbox A day one update. also sony didn't say it ran at 1080, activision did. The reason that they released the patch is because it's OBVIOUSLY capable of the higher resolution where the xbox is not.

xenonbox
xenonbox

At least Microsoft said from the beginning COD Ghost is 720p upscale 1080p not like Sony they forgot to tell you need an update to running the game at 1080p and not to mention the ps4 version have issues with the frames.

RobDev

@DrizztDark couldn't tell you. Merely stating a fact. this guys said why didn't Sony let people know that it was 720 and i just said the FACT that Sony isn't the publisher and all it takes is a day one patch to fix the resolution. so unless you can point out the announcement that indicates a day one patch for the xbox one to up the resolution i'd probably ask the same question of you.

The war of pixels were gone. if you're arguing about Frame rate go check Digital Foundry videos .

arqe
arqe

@onixevil they are doing good job yet sometimes doing some stupid things too.

for example DR3 got framerate issues but its not avoidable , i mean hundreds of zombies running around everything blowing up etc.

too much animation on 1 single screen. even the PC will suffer framerate issues with that kind a game.

bot overall is 9 out of 10 for digital foundry.

I sense a storm of Ultra HD remakes in about 2-3 years, since there is a market of so many people who belive that they see the differece...

Sundberg_man
Sundberg_man

@mathg04 @Sundberg_man Well thing is that i don't think UHD will be as big as people picturing it. In fact i don't think it will be a hit at all. In 2-3 years time you'll be playing AC 7 and COD 16 but i actually don't think that the developers will bother remaking games made in 720p when they earn more money releasing new titles from the franchise. HD remakes sure look better no denying that but the difference between the 720p versions and ''ultra HD''  is something i don't think will encourage people to re-buy games released to this gen. Ultra HD MGS3 now that is something entirely different ^^

mathg04
mathg04

@Sundberg_man @mathg04 Don't underestimate the sheeps. The sad part is, I would be one of the sheeps that buys MGS3 again in UHD, after the normal PS2 version, Subsistence, 3DS and the HD remake...

My god, I just realised that I own one game 4 times O-o

mr_nee

@mathg04 If I like game a lot on PS3 i usually buy it also for PC on some humblebundle, steam sale or ebay... I also have a lot of PC games I have never played :S

mathg04
mathg04

@themc_7 @mathg04 @Sundberg_manYes these are two remakes worth calling a remake. But why should e.g. GoW HD be worth the money? They just heighten the resolution and milked more money without doing more than the PS2 emulator on my PC does.

theKSMM
theKSMM

@Sundberg_man @mathg04 I usually buy HD remakes because:

(1) I missed a game when it initially came out on a particular console.
(2) I want to play the game again, and don't want to play a pixelated SD game on a 40" television with black sidebars.
(3) I want the achievements / trophies.
(4) I can collect an entire series on one disc which is especially nice if I didn't already have all the games from that series.

MrAVKV
MrAVKV

@mathg04 If consoles upscale to 4K, then they will be in the same crap upscaling situation with the current-gen consoles.

mathg04
mathg04

@Sundberg_man @mathg04 HD remakes make sense in a way, because the games definitivly look better. Still not worth the money, but I can follow that way of thinking.

But all the "720p looks sooooo bad" behavior, lets me think of a future, where the people really think they can see the difference between 1080p and 4k on their 40" TV.

So I'm looking forward to the UHD "remake" of Assassins Creed 1-4 in about 2-3 years.

mathg04

@DrizztDark That may apply to some people, I use the word sheep as a refference to Animal Farm, which describes pretty accurate the CoD, NFL, FIFA etc. buyers.

How sould we then call the people who are mindlessly buying year after year the same game, without questioning anything?

Sundberg_man
Sundberg_man

@mathg04 Oh that storm is already here. The amount of HD remakes released the past years with only minor improvements are just the first step in a whole new brand of milking.

MrAVKV
MrAVKV

@DrizztDark No "brother" I do. I've seen how crap current-gen games look upscaled to 1080p. Sub-hd resolutions such as 880X720 looks terrible on a 1080p screen. The same will happen if everything is natively running in 720p or 1080p and upscaled to 4K. Also, stop making assumptions, you are just embarrassing yourself.
