Call of Duty games top 2011 Xbox Live usage

Black Ops, Modern Warfare 3, and Modern Warfare 2 take top three spots on Xbox Live popularity list; Full House Poker most purchased Arcade title of the year.

It's no secret that the Call of Duty franchise is a behemoth. The most recent entry--Modern Warfare 3--minted over $1 billion in just 16 days and helped GameStop do over $3 billion during its holiday period. According to Microsoft, the Call of Duty franchise also dominated its Xbox Live online space in 2011.

It was a 1-2-3 finish for Call of Duty on Xbox Live in 2011.

Microsoft's director of Xbox Live programming, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, has released a chart of the most popular Xbox Live titles of 2011 as ranked by unique users, and the Call of Duty series claimed the top three spots.

Call of Duty: Black Ops was the most played game of 2011 on Xbox Live, with Modern Warfare 3 taking the number two spot, followed by Modern Warfare 2. Rounding out the top five are Halo: Reach and Battlefield 3, taking spots four and five respectively. The full list of the top Xbox Live titles of 2011 is available below.

In addition to parsing statistics related to console Xbox 360 titles, Major Nelson provided a list of best-selling Xbox Live Arcade titles. This list is led by Pinball FX 2 (a free download) and Full House Poker, with Castle Crashers, Fruit Ninja Kinect, and From Dust rounding out the top five in that order.

For the rest of Microsoft's 2011 popularity lists--which include top Games for Windows games, indie games, and Windows Phone games--check out Major Nelson's blog.

I am just glad I am not one of those people. I play awesome games like Skyrim and Alan Wake. Those two games are freaking awesome. Not to metion a bunch of Xbox Arcade games. Good year to be an Xbox owner, no need for that overrated Uncharted and Metal Gears series.

I love BF3, I love Halo Reach, I love Skyrim, I love-d MW2, but I can safely say I just dont have the fun on CoD anymore now than I used to. While its a dying series for me, lots of other people are just getting Xboxs, so I guess thats why people are still buying it. I got MW3 and Elite they day it came out, and I have 2000 kills in the multiplayer, which is pathetic lol. I hope others are having the same fun on MW3 that I did on MW2. If you guys really think about this, for a lot of people this is a brand new game, kind of like how when I got MW2 it was a brand new game but Cod 4 players hated it because it was the same thing.

As a Halo fan, I'm glad it's at least the 2nd most popular multiplayer franchise. How did Black Ops beat MW3? I guess it's just because it's been around longer.

This is not good news, sales and popularity of military FPS games sucks out any traces of creativity out from the FPS genre,so many devs trying to copy CoD,or some of its gameplay elements, hoping to take the part of CoD's market, while mostly failing miserably at it,only dissapointing their fans with watered-down products. I don't mindlessly hate CoD,but its a negative part of the gaming world for a core gamer like myself, since it brings stuff like simplicity and streamlining into my games, and I hate to see that more than anything... Howewer, nothing will change as long as CoD is popular, and there is simply no reason to change it for Activi$ion, they made a winning formula, one that so many gamers like, and will pay for it,even many of those "haters" who "hate" CoD so much, until the release day.No matter how stale the series becomes(and its already stale more than anything I ever saw in gaming),it will sell well, due to its "pick up and play" model,a thing that most gamers obviously like today...

@Hurvl The survey is based on unique users. So, if you have ever logged onto XBL to play a game then it counts you as a unique user the first time you do this. That is why Skyrim is on the list. CoD does well because it does competitive multiplayer well unfortunately Activision has jumped on this and decided to release a new game every year and literally have been given license to print money.

Its bad enough that BF3 got beat out by 3 CoD Titles, getting beat out even by Halo: Reach? That's gotta hurt DICE

Lol, I got +9 on my question about how a non-multiplayer game like Skyrim shows up on Xbox live's chart, but no answer for it. Xbox is the most CoD friendly console, which, among other things, the reviews on Metacritic show. The Sims sold a lot before anyone knew what CoD was and the franchise has actually sold more than the CoD franchise (The Sims 3 is available on 10 platforms which certainly helps), but we don't see every game being like the Sims. This year was great for RPG lovers, with Deus Ex: HR, The Witcher 2 and Skyrim, so I don't see any reason to panic and say "it's all downhill (aka CoD) from here".

And people always say 'it sucks', 'it's boring' and that it's supposedly 'dying'. This list proves them wrong. If those things were true then Call Of Duty wouldn't be on the top 3. And whether you like it or not, they've created a winning formula and until things start going downhill they won't change it. One thing I don't like though is how other developers try and copy it. You don't beat something by imitating it. You beat it by doing things differently.

@wavelength121 Dude you talk about spawn camping in BF3, that's all that happen in COD anything. Hell, I watched a video on youtube of fails in MW3 guy was killed and spawned 2 feet from where he died, they set you up to be spawn killed! Call of Duty needs revamping but it's never gonna happen as long as people keep buying it each year and they keep breaking sales records. It's why COD is a title I'll only buy used from now on, if I buy it at all that is.

@Masoodahmedkk The fact that the game is played the most proves that your statement is biased.

After seeing this list, it saddens me to see where gaming will be going. Yearly rehashes. I miss the days when game developers actually took their time making a game, trying to make the best game they possibly could. Quality has taken a backseat to quantity.

This list is *yawn*, oh wait, was this supposed to be news? I don't think this is a shock to anybody alive when you consider the number of COD copies that have sold. This list is like saying, "Rice, corn, and fish topped the consumed foods in 2011." So what.

@Nexrad Shutup DICE plant. People keep buying the CoD games because they are fun, fast-paced arcade-style shooters. Of course they are all similar-- what do you expect, rainbows and unicorns in a game called "modern warfare"? Find a new party line, or go play your overrated Battlefield with its childish censored ads and spawnkilling

I find most of the trolls who diss on CoD for having too much knifing & tubing are the people who knife and tube the most, lol

@manciuxl - How did you reach that conclusion, Black Ops beat MW 3 so how could you say the new CoD will be in the top spot and none of the past CoD games will even be in the top 3.
