Call of Duty: Elite registers 2 million

Activision's forthcoming online service for shooter series grabs another million users willing to test; scheduled to go live on July 14.

When the beta for Call of Duty: Elite--Activision's online destination for all things Call of Duty--deploys this July, gamers will have more than a few players to interact with.

More than a few volunteered to beta test Call of Duty: Elite.

Activision's social media manager Dan Amrich today updated his blog with news that 2 million people have signed up to beta test Call of Duty: Elite in just two weeks.

The last reported user tally for Elite came last week when the publisher said 1 million had registered in five days. Further, the service trial goes live on July 14, meaning the number still has a month to grow further ahead of its start date.

Call of Duty: Elite--which will be free for all, but also has paid components--was met with some confusion when it was announced. This led the megapublisher to release a FAQ detailing the free components of the service. Unfortunately, because some of the features relate to Modern Warfare 3, Activision has not yet announced what will be offered as part of its premium paid component--believed to cost around $8 a month.

One of the paid services, however, is known. This is a live-action video series that will leverage "top Hollywood talent" and is "dedicated to the Call of Duty community."

ok it is kinda good idea..but one flaw..this game is a annually released game..and every year almost everyone buys the next game and leaves the older game behind..so your already charging 50 dollars for the game that will only last 1 year...and an additional fee which is good for all the games..i think it would be better if you did what starcraft 2 did in ASEAN nations..prepaid cards for those whom play it on a time based schedule..and a box version for full access..i think you would be able to upset demands/supply with that. think how many players will that encourage

Some features might be useful, others I couldn't give two sh*ts about. Most gamers don't care about their stats other than the kills and their scores. Personally I like to challenge myself, so I try to keep an eye on my accuracy and things like that. The old Battlefield 2 stats sites held a lot of info regarding those stats. IN my opinion BF2 is still one of the best online multiplayer shooters and pretty realistic too, sniping was a real challenge with bulletdrop and such over long range. If Battefield 3 goes back to that setup and completely ignores the Bad Company series, I'll be playing more BF3 than CoD MW3, simply because it'll be more of a challenge. Wait and see I suppose. Also Battlefield should be in 1080i or 1080p, if not, f*ck it I'm not bothering to play it. 720p ruined Bad Company 1&2, they could've looked so gorgeous if they'd bothered to increase the resolution.

wow.. companies will do anything for a profit. Don't we pay enough on games, subscriptions and downloadable content already?

I found this video to be hilarious. It reminds me alot of my COD:Black Ops experience online. I will definitely be looking for theLegendofKarl online (if he's real). You have something on your face....double rainbow : )

video gamers=dumbest consumers..paying for something that should be free specially with the company is gonna make $100 million on profit

I'll be buying both MW3 and BF3,cos they're both great games in there own way. This whole debate about which is better is really useless, cos people are always gonna like things that some others dont, that's just life.

People stop hateing on CoD!!!! Battlefield might be a better game and all but if you dont like it keep it to yourself! We already know CoD is overtaken by little kids and isnt as good as it used to be.

@wasdf111...there was no official battlefield 3 release date prior to the announcement of MW3's release date....its a simple business strategy ..like in a game of chess EA waited for activision to make its move .....basically EA looks for all of activisions mistakes and cashes in on them (to the benefit of us gamers)....so now Mw3 is basically a MW2 Mod with a paid subscription service that is coming out AFTER battlefield 3 ....long story short BF3 > Mw3

i deeply fear for the intelligence of 2 million gamers out there. it's as if they're saying to Activision: "You're doing a great job changing nothing each year, here have some more money"

There is a pretty big contrast in the communities here. It seems like Gamespot is all about the nature of gaming. Oh 10 years ago it was great. But the truth is as long as there is a market there will be money made. You can complain all you want but the objective of Activision and gaming companies in general is to make money. With this they will potentially grow and pay more to employees and its all good for them. It's like your saying Netflix is sooo much more expensive than you local DVD guy or library or redbox. If there is a market there is money regardless of how much you do or don't like it. And besides It is someone's choice if they want to pay extra for COD instead of getting a new game. If its the choice between COD Elite and DLC and a game like Battlefield. The 'hardcore COD' will take the former and the 'hardcore gamer' will take the latter.

wasdf111
wasdf111

@dstv Umm Battlefield pushed the release date backwards... that's not rushing the developpers when they could make valuable patches? Seems like they just want a jumpstart to COD and in the end its about the money

Here you go muppets, The start of the end of people putting free MP in their FPS's. Just think if your all the kind of chum they hope you are you'll be so pathetic you'll end up buying golden bullets ingame or some stupid crap. This is sad whoever thought of adding elite to the title is brilliant it sounds so much better then ripoff.

It's the first semi-free thing that Activision has done. Of course people will try it out.

meh...whatevs as long as cod exists then the annoying 12 year olds , hackers and boosters will stay away from battlefield..but still i have to ask who actually registered for cod elite...cod has slowly died after the release of cod 4 and still activision is trying squeeze every drop of sour milk out of it...Glad battlefield is with EA at least they give the devs time to make games

Sigil-otaku
Sigil-otaku

I'm okay with this so long as they don't turn into paying subscribers. You've got be be brainless to want to pay activision to give you very minor gaming related content (mostly a bunch of stupid vids, stat trackers and stuff) for a constant subscription fee. Just remember you stop paying and you lose it so your paying to temporarily look at some, more than likely, uninspired videos and a few stats. We'll see what they announce with CODMW3 features but Black Ops biggest change was just gambling credits or whatever. I don't remember any COD games being innovative or revolutionary either so I doubt this paid for service will suddenly herald a new dawn for gaming either.

That's because its free right now. We'll see how many people stick around for the actual sub.

@Rocker6 I agree. They should sell the company and find a new owner because Kotick is an idiot. He makes dumb business decisions. Ever since the Tony Hawk series died, I've hated Activision. If CoD dies, I'll probably never buy another game from Activision. @dRuGGeRnaUt Your statement about Metallica is a completely different story. They sue their fans because their fans are illegaly getting their music. In other words, people are getting copies of their songs and albums for free, which means that Metallica isn't selling their music. If musicians don't sell their music, how do you expect them to make money? How would you feel if you produced a good product, but nobody bought it and people managed to get it without paying? Therefore, fans treat them like crap, not the other way around.

I can't believe this many people actually signed up for this. Oh yeah by the way, I'm grateful to hear that there will be "top Hollywood talent," because that's the number one thing I look for when purchasing a game.

@avngr9 "Try reading people...That text under the headline has useful info. This stuff is FREE." Way to take your own advice moron, if you fully read my comment I was talking about the PREMIUM SERVICE. There shouldn't be a premium service in the first place after all the money they've sucked off from gamers.

Ya signed up about 1/4 of those will actaully pay those are the annoying 12 year olds who will buy anything with the CoD name on it

dRuGGeRnaUt

@rocker6: you say that companies should act less "greedy", yet have a avatar picture of Metallica, a band that has repeatedly tried to sue its own fans into bankrupcy for having some live bootlegs. Seriously, why is it ok for metallica to treat its fans like S*** but not for a company??? you do know companies only care about money right?? Why would a company ever care how people feel as long as the bottom line is $$$?? In the end, I think this "elite" thing is pointless, and offers features that games like halo have offered(mostly) since halo 2.. So no i don't see a point to this, but if these feature are "free" then let people sign up. You know they will sign up for the "paid" sub when it comes out. Just let it go, it will happen, just like the rediculous prices for metallica tickets, they just want money, not to put on a good show(ps: once upon a time metallica DID care, but those days are long, LONG behind us :( the good ol' days)

Never buy or use free online games. Prefer to purchase games at EB Games. I can then play my game whenever and how many times I like without worrying about hackers, fowl language, etc.

@taino1128 Even if they made more games, they would be quicly turned into milkable franchises,Activi$ion would need a change in almost everything to become a good gaming company, first the leadership,Kotick needs to be replaced with someone less greedy.

Brainless game, for brainless people. CoD Elite will get content only accessible to subscribed members(Includes maps, Weapons, and other features) Which basically is a **** little PayToWin turdpile, Im sure it will be a huge success thanks to all the shallow husks, that brought the industry into this sad state where ignorance and stupidity abounds.

I'd have to be insane to sign up for this lol. This kinda looks like Halo Waypoint and not only is Halo ten times better than CoD, but Waypoint is...why yes it's free :)

taino1128

One thing that Activision doesn't realize is that if they had more development teams and released other games, they wouldn't have to release a new CoD every year or have something like Elite. They do things like this because this is their only way of making money. Other companies don't need to do this because they have so many great games, as opposed to just one. Activision, GET THE CLUE! YOU NEED TO HAVE MORE GAMES!

Marasca2

It makes me very sad to know that the gaming industry has become a money maker. Just compare the games we had 10 years ago and the fun we had with them. Yes, we had to pay for them, but a fair price and just once, to play the game for 6 months or more. Now, we pay for the game, pay for DLCs, sometimes we have to pay for the multiplayer too, and for what? For a 5h campaign, an average multiplayer and some crappy map packs.

Dojomeat

Its funny how many people are having a teary about having to pay, what about all the WOW players, are they getting ripped because they pay to play? should it not be free like every other Multilayer game?

@avngr9, with all your post defending this garbage rehased game, one would think you work for craptovision. If not then enjoy paying a monthly fee for a subpar game and prestige away.. The rest of us will be playing BF3..

I'd beta test but Id never subscribe. It's basically and idiots guide. It won't help you aim better or react faster. It might give you strategies, but c'mon, are you really unable to form your own strategy in such a simple game? Now that I think about it, with theatre mode, you can even go back and watch people you played with or against that put up great scores and just look at their strategy. What a rip off.

@avngr9 We'll see about that,when MW3 is out.

@Rocker6 Are you letting people buy prestige weapons or levels through Elite? • No, players are not able to buy prestige weapons or levels through Elite. While Call of Duty Elite wants to help people become better players, there’s still only one way to level up to new weapons, XP and prestige, and that’s to earn it in game.

avngr9
avngr9

@Tehspartan333 - I believe this is your question: So, if I just want to buy Map Packs standalone, I can still do that? • Yes. Call of Duty Elite has been built around the tenets of value and choice. To us that choice means that players who purchase Modern Warfare 3, who want to extend the game may prefer the option of a map pack. We will continue to offer that option. So if you want to just buy a map pack only, no problem.

LMFAO! I knew the responses even before I clicked on the subject! All the Anti-Cods lol (btw im not a fanboy but will admit to playing cod (BFBC2 is waaaay better!)) All the responses about boycotting, people being drones, all the dislikes to those that enjoy cod. You angry anti cods will not change anything, there are too many people who enjoy cod to take notice of those who are angry at the ridiculous prices. No1 cares if you dont have it, because for everyone who says they dont like/own it, there are 10 more than you who do. No1 is going to give you a badge or medal. All you can do is crack on a play other games, while those who enjoy it and want to spend money on a game to slightly improve it (extremelyslightly in most cases) let them. I have bought one map pack - because i felt like it...I dont have to buy any others if I dont want to - Simple as that. Keep smiling, and enjoy other games if you want :)
