Call of Duty: Elite outed?

Reportedly leaked logo may have revealed the name for Activision's upcoming "all-new connected digital universe" for the popular shooter series.

Source: See below.

What we heard: On Monday, Activision issued its earnings for the January-March quarter. Other than reporting $503 million in profits, the publisher also further revealed its plans for the Call of Duty franchise. Specifically, the company said that this year's installment--heavily rumored to be Modern Warfare 3--will have "an unprecedented online universe that is accompanying it." The publisher indicated that this "all-new connected digital universe"--also called a new "platform"--was in the works at its newly formed Beachhead studio. In a call with analysts following the report, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said that "We look forward to sharing more specifics on this exciting new endeavor in the coming weeks."

Now, it appears that one of those specifics--the platform's title--may have been leaked a little bit early. A person claiming to work in the tradeshow graphics industry posted several pieces of Activision-related Electronic Entertainment Expo art on the forums of gaming blog Electric Hydra. One is a logo for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The second is something called Call of Duty: Elite, possibly the name of the Beachhead's new online platform.

The official story: Activision had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Given its similarity to Modern Warfare 3 art that has surfaced on both Kotaku and a teaser in Official PlayStation Magazine UK, the Modern Warfare 3 logo looks not bogus--giving credence to the Call of Duty: Elite logo. The title "Elite" also connotes a premium level, something that analysts expect the Beachhead studio's service to be. However, until Activision makes it official, it is unclear what exactly Call of Duty: Elite is--or if it's anything at all.

@theone332 That's so true. As much as I prefer battefield over cod, and as much as I hate on cod, I know that I'll be at gamestop at 12 am just to pick up this new cod. I always feel better about myself when I get the first copy of cod before all the gamers that I know :P

@andr31coco How F%(#kin thick are you dude? Hide in a tank? Let me guess... You played BF once, but when you tried to corner camp a tank blew your ass through the ceiling. Instead of swapping to a rocket launcher and a gun you haven't practiced with every day since release, you instead chose your dual 1867's sprinted towards the tank and tried to knife it. Failing again your, ass is run over by the tanker. Now you start to rage, if you can't beat em join em! So you hopped into a tank and got c4'd within 30 seconds of taking it out of neutral. Your rage continues to manifest itself in crushed mountain dew cans and mashed buttons. You type a foul offensive message to the tanker, who has since been killed by a dude with some skill and a rocket launcher. FINALLY! You try and go Rambo again but rush into a group of people that know how to work as a team

I dont understand why we fight over which game is (going to be) better: Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3. They are both AWSOME! I wont be posting any comments on either game about how the other one is better or how it sucks. I'm gonna do that after the games come out. Hating takes time to develop. :P

@andr31coco HA you complain about us in are tanks, dood you must be the least skilled person in the world just cos it takes some inteligence to win at bf , all you realy need to do on cod is spray even on waw all you need to do is spray a tank and itll blow up, im sorry but battlefiald is far more realistic and tatical than cod. dont get me wrong i like both games but i do preffer bf pls you dont have overly exagurated kill streeks in fact there are no kill streeks i mean 6 kills and you get to call in a 3 bill jet and in cod you have some of the worsed snipers in the world with a little girls lung cappacity

right on.. Dukes never been a multiplayer game.. its a single player story driven shooter.. So if they give us some "thrown in" multiplayer crappy experience.. who cares... ...unless... the single player mode is very short.. then i'd be peeved... make it as long as RE4, Red Faction 1, Deus Ex 1, Thief 2, System Shock 2... ... know what i mean? Long ass games... Actually now that i think about it, i just revealed 2 common denominators here(besides RE and RF).. old games... which Duke is.. and pc games.. which Duke is also... Come to think of it, i'd rather see System Shock 3... or a remake of SS2(no Bioshock doesn't count)

@shabulia And you forgot the expensive DLCs, Which I tend to avoid 15$ for just a few maps which should be in the game anyway. As I laways hate DLC in yearly installment based games. We are buying a game every year and still developers cut stuff for DLC, That's annoying. Still no doubt COD is the best FPS out there, second one being BFBC (according to me at least)

@desperadoxd Again, if you're so worried about multiplayer then you can play a different game. What did you expect out of an old-school shooter? unfair killstreaks? iron sights? I just can't believe people are always worried about online play when eveyone is mostly buying it for single player play.

shabulia

@pakhair Take heart, my friend. There is nothing wrong with buying a new CoD game every year. As long as the level of quality stays up there, I'll buy as well. It's when they release a new version every year and they start to suck; that's when enough is enough.

pakhair

Every year I say, It's my last COD and won't buy any more COD again because activision is doing way too much milking BUT in the end...... I'm always guilty of buying a new one.......

@TankBusterJenn Don't get me wrong -- I happen to be a fan of the Duke --- but after watching the multiplayer teaser, it basically looks like Gearbox has just thrown it [multiplayer] together in an attempt at offering a 'complete experience'. When one sees something of the sort, it makes them think about the game as a whole... I went from being excited to skeptical after a four minute video.

cry cry cry...get out of here BF fans and hide in your tanks, because that's all you do. Prove me wrong and step out fighting like a man, not like a girl from behind a turret. Meet you online. And btw, before you thumb me down, if CoD players are 12 year old boys, then BF players are 6 year-old girls, hiding and calling mortars from their base.(or fell very pro when killing infantry with a tank) At least in CoD you earn that right by proving yourself good. So go worship your BF3 elsewhere.

Another COD is confirmed in 2011 Activision said that. The only question is whether it is MW3 or not

Well of course they're going to make a MW3! As long as CoD sells like it is right now, they'll never stop.

fool me once with mw2 shame on you, fool me twice with black ops shame on me, ive learned my lesson and ill stay away from this game until I try a demo or at someone else's house, long live bf3 for best fps of 2011

ant2967
ant2967

This is all speculation on my part but the problem I see having with COD games going forward is they are going to charge you 60 dollars to what has been a single player campaign on average of 4 to 6 hours and now I will have to pay a monthly fee to play the multiplayer. To me that equals one big screw job to consumers.

I hope the PSN is up and running by then so I can give these games a shot at the rate sony is moving i have my doubts.

@grey_fox1984 True. I guess my problem is with the fanboys who don't know what they're talking about. : /

grey_fox1984
grey_fox1984

@TacticalMobster Some people just go looking for a fight, and want to have info on the games that they will one day be ragging on. It's not mature, and it's not cool, but people do it anyway. The best thing we can do to combat it is to have intelligent points that are rooted in keen observations of video game culture and be part of the solution, not part of the problem. That doesn't mean you shouldn't ever argue, but there is a difference between a proper debate (i.e. "COD vs KZ - pros and cons") and fanboy driven name calling (i.e. "COD SUCKS!" "KILLZONE IS TOTALLY GAY I believe in video games as an entertainment art form, not as a gigantic industry of children's toys, so I will give every issue the respect it deserves and encourage everyone else to do the same.

TacticalMobster
TacticalMobster

@grey_fox1984 I understand your point, and you're right. However, a majority of these anti-CoD players dont list these reasons. They just say Call of Duty sucks without mentioning the points you did. Not to mention, if they don't like the series, why look it up?

grey_fox1984
grey_fox1984

@TacticalMobster Some people prefer Battlefield because you can destroy cover and make camping irrelevant and I personally love Killzone, because the level design makes camping a difficult proposition, with several entrances to every area. Killzone also places a greater emphasis on controlled, well aimed shots, where in COD you can get away with a lot more spray-and-pray depending on your load-out. Don't get me wrong, I think COD is tons of fun and will probably buy MW3 unless Battlefield 3 looks as great on PS3 as it does in the trailers, but COD is also not the best FPS series (I would argue no series is the clear cut best in this genre, there are things to be said for Halo, COD. Battlefield, Killzone and Resistance almost equally depending on your perspective and what you look for in a shooter).

grey_fox1984
grey_fox1984

@ TacticalMobster I think the divide between pro-COD players and anti-COD players is a bit more complicated than "is it a good game or not". By in large the COD games are quite good. Both the single player and multiplayer in MW, MW2 and BO are tons of fun. Where the anti-COD people start getting ammo (haha) is when you start breaking out the magnifying glass and taking a close look at the gameplay mechanics. In the single player games, there are a lot of nifty set pieces and adrenaline rush moments, but if you look closer, the AI is extremely poor, making the enemies seem like card board cut outs, popping up along their track at a firing range. The multiplayer, particularly in Black Ops, REALLY encourages camping, which is an extremely effective, but super lame strategy that is made possible by the level design and perk systems (both of which would have been great if they were balanced better).

I'm truly bothered by the ratio of people who say Call of Duty is crap to the amount of people who enjoy said series. Obviously the game is good, because if it wasn't, there wouldn't be seven titles, with an eighth on the way. And if you hate the series so much, why are you looking up information on it? Just sayin...

I am done with CoD, the creative team behind the previous games has left and so now they'll all stink. Not only that but it's time to waste my time on other upcoming online games e.g. Gears of War 3 & Battlefield 3

@Rafandrews But it's the same game every year. There's nothing new in the CoD franchise.
