Call of Duty dev: "We want everyone to be successful"

Infinity Ward producer Mark Rubin says competition like Battlefield series helps push the studio do more with its own games.

Call of Duty: Ghosts executive producer Mark Rubin wants all military shooters to be successful, including competing product Battlefield. Speaking with Games Industry International, the Infinity Ward executive producer said it isn't true that developers of competing brands are hostile towards each other, though marketing material does sometime portray this message.

"It's less antagonistic, from a developer's side--sure marketing and stuff is all [about that] but on a developer's side it's like, 'Oh, did you see that stuff they're doing? That's so cool!' We could do something that's like this and that and we get excited about seeing that kind of stuff," Rubin said.

"So from a developer's side, it definitely pushes us [to do better]. But it pushes us in a--I don't know if other studios feel this way--but I hope in a sort of camaraderie type sense," he added. "'Oh, those guys are doing awesome stuff. Let's jack up our game.' But not like two opposing teams. Rather, like the same team pushing in the same direction."

Rubin explained that everyone in the industry wants gaming to be compelling, because "if gaming isn't good, then we all lose our jobs in a sense."

"So for us, I think that the intellectual realization is we want everyone to be successful because if gaming is successful then we're all successful," Rubin said.

Also in the interview, Rubin explained that Infinity Ward is currently building Call of Duty: Ghosts with 125 total internal developers, which makes the company "medium to small" by today's standards, he said.

"If you look at most other studios they are around 300 or 400 people. We feel 125 is the culturally right number to be at," Rubin said.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launches November 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions are set to arrive later in the fall.

Competitor Battlefield 4 releases a week earlier on October 29. One analyst believes both games can successfully coexist.

No you won't lose your jobs if you keep releasing a new almost-same-cod every year. And if you see Battlefield as a competitor, then you just failed. There are a lot of COD games and less improvements, there's just a few Battlefield games but look what we are. I'm not Battlefield fan, i'm a CoD fan (COD 2, COD MW, COD MW2) and if i and people don't feel anything really deep in your recent games, this is your failure. Remember how we felt when we first saw or played COD 4 Modern Warfare. I didn't feel the same for other games after COD 4, but MW2 was still better than most of the other CoDs because it was the sequel of the COD MW and people just wondered what could be happen next, same for MW3 but after seeing and playing MW3, i understand how it could be much more better... Musics were not as good as MW2, story was utter bulshit and mostly random... I'm not expecting a great CoD game in such a short time, because when something is just rushed, i know it will be a fail.

Both games are great in there own way.

Already got CoD: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 pre-ordered for PS4 anyway, so I'm cool.

i remember when i played COD-4 it was about: skill, proper recoil management,  flanking, listening, positioning.... and than came MW2, and what is it since than what it was on every new COD game? twitch, hide, killstreak...

yeah there might be a gazillion extra perks and plenty of "balance" (tehehe...) reworks, but the core has rotten away. and the funny thing is they always promise that COD will "go back to it's roots" of the winning formula of COD-4... pfffttt i bet we will hear this again!

and in the end, COD just gets extrapolated in it's regurgitation of excess. it's like an obese cyborg that's about to explode at any minute now and only black magic can help it...

I reckon Mark Rubin has a Battlefield 3 account. *giggles*

Dont compare Call of Duty and Battlefield Two FPS that play like two different FPS

Ones mainly focused on CQB and the other is focused more on a larger scale.

I thought this whole article was about how they want to dumb down their games for the casual mass so that the casuals can succeed in the game.

They should realize it by now that they have helped destroying the game industry already for a decade now with this Mainstream Level dumbingdown of games. But since these are the guys only doing this for the money, what the hell do they care?

F* off Infinity Ward. Or is it actually In(d)efinite ret(W)ard ?

@MarkRubin

Competition,, is not Battlefield..

Competition is mostly between Infinity Ward & Treyarch.  Including all the Call of Duty titles you guys made that Activision published. So fall back in line general. .

Lol... yet they don't attempt dedicated servers.  All I hear is "blah blah blah" Infinity Ward.

Maybe you mean the more people that play video games means it's more likely your game will sell more. I don't like putting words in other people's mouths but that's what I thought as soon as I read the headline.

Modern Military shooter sucks. not getting Bf or Cod

OHGFawx

And yet in the CoD story from last week, an Infinity Ward employee said that they really couldn't tamper with the formula very much because its so successful as it is. He came out and said they have very little room to innovate.

As long as people are still hooked on army type games that is good news for Activision and EA.

I always get a kick out of this new trend with people: "It's cool to like Battlefield and it's cool to hate on COD If you like COD your a kiddie frat boy! BF IS A REAL MANS GAME!!!!". I can't wait until Battlefield is in the same boat as COD is. Fucking sheep is what you haters are. I play and enjoy both series and will continue to do so.

I don't get it! The man is talking about unity amongst developers and the overall success of his field and yet most of the  people on this forum take the time to bash Call of Duty. It's just ridiculous.

@botsio But it was the Messi who has been the "football player of the year" many times, not Ronaldo.

@botsio i was wondering... wich game pushes the graphic and wich pushes gameplay, because COD have none of them, and BF have both.

19James89

@botsio You're right, both Call of Duty and Battlefield are generic, first person shooters. However I will defend someone's consumer rights to purchase and play these rancid games.

@LauraMyLuv Don't worry bro I think in BF4 you can play as a female soldier as least see one in the campaign.

@LauraMyLuv I agree, such sexism should be outlawed. Seeing as Barack Obama likes to interfere in matters that don't concern him, I suspect he will be drafting up a bill to combat such a societal ill as sexism as we speak.

@quakke It's not Activision's fault that many other companies have gone down the same route. COD is a popular and profitable franchise and therefore other companies wanna get in on some of that profit by making games that are similar. You should really blame all the other companies who are just copying the COD-recipe.

That's all you've got to say for me because i just told the truth?

Old-school gameplay completely different from CoD gameplay: Serious Sam 3:BFE 6.0/10, Aliens vs Predator 2010 5.5/10, Rise of the Triad 2013 5.5/10.

Modern gameplay with CoD gameplay: CoD: MW 9.0/10, MW2 8.5/10, BO 9.0/10, MW3 8.5/10, BO2 8.0/10

Happy living in your litte ignorant bubbleworld.

@phj87@quakke

I won't ever blame the other devs for "copying" because in reality they are pratically forced to make CoD clone.

The choice that is given for these devs these days, is "either make CoD clone or it's instant 5/10 review and you can say good bye for those successfull gamesells also".

Do you seriously think id software made Rage with passion when all it's gameplay was, was Call of Duty? id is another studio that was forced to make CoD. Don't make CoD clone and reviewscore of 5/10 with low gamesells.

This thing is proved in a video i made on yt.

@jsmoke03 I replied to this last night but my comment vanished for some reason. Like Helios_Sun said, the articles contradict one another. BF is trying to innovate, and CoD is just CoD. Ghosts will be running on the same engine that CoD4:MW ran on. So that's "improvement" for you.

Helios_Sun
Helios_Sun

@jsmoke03 @OHGFawx Because this article contradicts the article mentioned by OHGFawx i have never seen a game get so many sales on Nil changes and literally no graphical changes since the 1st call of duty modern warfare thats just lazy, and gamers will start to notice.

tightwad34
tightwad34

@Helios_Sun Nope. Those are not even close to an fps. Hell, I never play those or any game in fpv if I don't have to.

phj87
phj87

@quakke @phj87 I never said "developers". I said "companies", i.e. the publishers, the people with the money. They see that Activision is succesful with their franchise and then they force their developers to do something similar. I don't see how that's Activision's fault, it's simply because the consumer seem to want that product and the other companies/publishers don't have the imagination to make something original and different, so they copy a succesful formula. So blame the companies that copy COD and flood the market with similar games or the consumers who buy COD if you have a problem with the influence of that franchise. Besides, you really thought Rage was a COD clone? I don't really see the resemblance other than it being an FPS.

mathg04

@Helios_Sun@jsmoke03@OHGFawx Definitly not a CoD fan, but Animal Crossing has done less inovations and less grafical improvement and still sold millions of each version. I mean they didn't even changed the animations or textures since the gamecube version.

That said, I have to water my flowers before the shops close...

jcplglob
jcplglob

@Helios_Sun @jsmoke03 @OHGFawx They noted that alright, it was discussed over and over agian the past few years. But gamers are blind to the fact that the sooner they stop buying this recycled crap the sooner they will get better product.

@tightwad34 @Helios_Sun Detriiment is  insulting not fps games but the people that play them. It's sort of dumb do say things like that anyway. As if the ppl that play fps games don't play any other genre. oO
