Call of Duty and Destiny can "peacefully coexist" says Activision

Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg downplays possibility of one franchise cutting into sales potential for the other.

Activision's behemoth shooter franchise Call of Duty and newcomer Destiny can "peacefully coexist," according to Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. Speaking with IGN, the executive explained that the audiences for both games are different.

"They're very different games made by very different creative visionaries. I think that they can peacefully coexist with one another," Hirshberg said. "I think that what Call of Duty has done, it's done better than anybody. The multiplayer is a visceral, impactful, white-knuckle-ride experience."

"What Bungie has done, they have done better than anyone as well. The first-person shooter genre has shown tremendous staying power, as well as tremendous capacity in terms of the appetite people have for it," he added. "I think what we've seen is that if there are good games in this genre, people will show up to play them. But if you have to compete, it’s nice to compete with yourself."

Call of Duty: Ghosts launches this November, while Destiny is in a pre-alpha state of development and is expected to launch sometime in 2014.

Elsewhere in the interview, Hirshberg explained that Activision has made a "sizeable investment" in Bungie and Destiny, one that represents one of the "biggest investments in a new IP that's ever been made in the industry."

Of course CoD and Destiny can coexist:

Cod --> Junior high boys

Destiny --> The rest of us

Please let Call of Duty die already, leave it where it should be.  An old friend you think of from good times gone by, but he kept borrowing money off you and didn't pay it back.

Call of duty and Destiny will coexist on a shelf below the almighty battlefield!

I think activision should be more worried about titanfall and battlefield 4. This will be the first time i wont be purchasing a cod game. Tired of the repetitive gameplay, . Battlefield is on my maybe list, killzone a def, will wait for titalfall to hit the ps4 or get it on my pc. I might be focusing more on single player games this year like destiny, division, etc etc

Halo is the most legendary game of  FPS genre and Destiny is going to follow it.

HALO 5 will be the best of all these games mentioned. After the semi failure that was HALO 4, I anticipate that 5 is going to come back with a vengeance.

Call of Duty needs competition, Battlefield tried its hardest but EA never makes a number one title, Destiny and Titanfall look alright but for me, COD is still the one on consoles, i care so much about the story that normally i play the storry in september when theres nothing else to do, COD has been amazing but its getting to that point where even the designers are running out of ideas. I dont understand why good maps from previous games dont get released as a free pack, for example Jungle COD BO1, Stadium, not fucking Nuketown. Cod is also the most hacked multiplayer experience, i hope those kids remain on Xbox, its toxic playing online on thee x360. Can they fix the problems yes, do they want to fix no.

this is bullcrap they only say this because they want their games to survive and continue to be played but that's not going to happen they do the same thing every year and its boring bland and over done the statement "I think that what Call of Duty has done, it's done better than anybody. The multiplayer is a visceral, impactful, white-knuckle-ride experience." that's a bunch of shit the only time this statement was true when COD4 happened and the rest have been the same lame shooter for years with people constantly finding ways to use the cheapest loadouts the cheapest perks and the cheapest camping spots in 1 word I describe COD as overdone. no offense to halo players or cod players but DESINTY is the game that needs to put halo and COD to rest for good they need a break if they didn't make COD games so often and actually took time to make it good that would be fine and halo is just a tired series that needs a nap for now. Destiny is going to be halo and COD put together without the BS of COD and it will have the skill of halo. COD is unrealistic bs and I don't see how anybody can handel that ive played up until black ops and its the same thing every game quick scope or getting shot point blank with a shotgun and survive and COD ghost wont be any different. I have no idea why bungie would partner up with such a bad company that makes COD their statement makes it sound like there not tryin to outdo destiny like their not going to try and make it a better game so they can have their games to continue which it wont the xboxone and Ps4 have different ideas for games this time around and nobody is going to stick to a shooter like cod

For them to "peacefully coexist" they both need to be on the same platforms as each other, and all of the platforms that they are each on, so that means PC, as well as anyone platforms Ghosts is coming out on.

Let me translate: Can we, at Activision, pump money out of consumer's pockets twice, the same day? No.... but you can pump the money out of our pockets twice, on different days.

Just trying to help Hirshberg clarify things out of bosses mumbo-jumbo...

I think the CoD model of the last 5-6 years is now over. It's biggest selling point over shooters like the Battlefield series was it's smooth frame rate, fast pace, and sense of fluidity. Now that we will have consoles that can handle large, open maps with high-res graphics, framerate, and fluidity, shooters such as Battlefield, Destiny, and even The Division will reign supreme.

CoD will need more creativity than adding a dog to your team. This constant rehash of the same model they have done isn't gonna fly anymore.

well if I have to choose it is an easy choice since I hate COD

I like how Activision promotes that outdated COD with hollywood actors. The last 2 trailors (MW3 and BO2) are really nice

COD is like the madden of FPS games. You pay full price every year and what you really get is a roster update and a few new features.

Destiny have a potential to fight with modern shooters like BF4,TitanFall and Killzone Shadow Fall..But COD should have to go now, people should forget about COD and in future nobody will want to hear the word of COD anymore.

@indiansepoy  I thought Destiny was only multi-player ... it would be great if it had a single player campaign as well.

@STrugglingFool They copied over a lot of the stuff from halo. The video I saw was very disappointing. The drop ships acted just like the covenant drop ships from halo.

@vadagar1 I love the battlefront series and am glad to see it coming back, hopefully the way it was before, huge battles, offline split screen multiplayer, vehicles, and with some original maps unless GREEDA see what I did there? EA charges for them at $9.99 on psn cause lets face it MS points arent good anymore anywhere.

@rawkstar007 this is true however people will still buy it just because it's a COD game for no reasons at all smh

buffaloblitz85
buffaloblitz85

@rawkstar007 Couldn't agree more.  Personally I hated COD but still played it for that reason alone.  Smooth as silk frame rate.  Now other shooters will be just as smooth but will have other things CoD does not... fewer 'tunnel' maps,  bigger maps, destructible environments, more customization, better graphics, more players and ect.

fillup0
fillup0

@rawkstar007 People will still be drawn to the smaller maps and fast pace of cod. Battlefield won't be any faster, even with 60 fps, it'll just be silkier.

shadowhunter0

@mediarays lol yeah and plus that have been using the same engine since the first modern warfare game and the next game is using that exact same engine

buffaloblitz85

@spectreSE7EN Yeah the 'roster update' is the equivalency to a few new guns and new maps (really they just move the crates around and change the color lol)

@SpazldNinjaDude @spazstix cods been gone for ages folks its only played by little drones now...

i must admit though the dog and the little fishes in ghosts are probably going to save it this time -_-

Adema83

@vadagar1 How so? Destiny Is pretty much Borderlands with more players, the only similarity is the FPS component.

buffaloblitz85
buffaloblitz85

@fillup0  BF4 WILL be 'faster' due to the 64 people playing in a single match.  The player will always be near combat and won't have to run around and find it like on previous BF games for console.
