Call of Duty 2014 is "ambitious" and "creative," Sledgehammer says

Sledgehammer Games cofounder Glen Schofield talks up the studio's latest project.

Today during a Game Developers Conference presentation, Sledgehammer Games cofounder Glen Schofield boasted about the studio's current project, this year's Call of Duty game.

He said the game is the "most ambitious, most creative game we've ever made," referring to his development career alongside other Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey.

Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick previously described 2014's Call of Duty title as "perhaps the best Call of Duty game ever created." Activision has yet to formally announce the game, but the publisher often announces new Call of Duty games in May, so the wait might not be much longer.

Also during the presentation today, Schofield and Condrey showed off an in-game character image for this year's Call of Duty. [Ed. Note: It looked impressive, but it was on screen for only a fraction of second, so I could not capture it. Sorry]

Schofield and Condrey have worked together for many years now and are perhaps best known for helping create the Dead Space franchise at Visceral Games for Electronic Arts.

Schofield and Condrey

Activision hired Schofield and Condrey in 2009 to lead Sledgehammer Games. The studio's first project was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which it co-developed with Infinity Ward. Sledgehammer Games now has around 200 people on staff, which makes the studio one of the biggest in northern California, Schofield said.

The Call of Duty series is now on a three-year, three-studio development cycle. Previously, the franchise was developed on a two-year interval, with Infinity Ward launching games during odd-numbered years, and Treyarch releasing titles during even-numbered years. Now, Sledgehammer Games is in the mix, as well as supporting studios Raven Software and Neversoft Entertainment.

Activision maintains that this move will allow developers to have extra time to not only create new features to help push the brand forward, but also so they can spend more time polishing each game. Installments in the Call of Duty franchise will still be released on a yearly basis.

the thing that pisses all off of call of duty are the cheaters and hackers. is so difficult to put punkbuster in the game. battelfield doesn't have nearly as much cheaters and hackers then call of duty and thats the reason i play battlefield and no more call of duty

So these are the guys who changed dead space from the glory of dead space 2's horror to the action genre Dead Space 3??? I hate them already...

Bunch of whiny noobs on these boards. Some of us grew up with pong. You little kids have no appreciation for what is out there today. Gawd forbid you ever like or compliment anything or anyone. Just whine about this and that. I'd like to see have you whiffs survive a week without internet or any type of electronics. Pathetic generation of entitled turds.

What could possibly be more creative then bacon camo for your gun? I think they should start charging these idiots cash for every attachment and perk.

just make COD: SpaceWar. we will have laser gun, rocket launcher, jetpack, nuclear warhead, with vehicles like spaceship and space tanks. Plus! The battlefield will be in outer space, the moon surface, or Mars, or any other planet. there will be free flow movement like in Titanfall, we can also call in airstrike where the Mothership launch a massive laser beam and kill everyone in the field

Get rid of the 'Murica vs Tur'rists' thing and try something totally different.

Ironic they haven't changed the game engine since cod 4. Can't they just save the bullshit and release the map packs for 60 dollars already!? Call of duty now with a bullshit perk!

Thank god I had Word13 find the underlining statement. Now I know what to do :)

"perhaps the best Call of Duty game ever created. We will have next years title, so perhaps that will be the best Call of Duty game ever created. Five years from now, we envision that years title to be perhaps the best Call of Duty game ever created. Of course we always have that download content, which will perhaps be the best ever created. You know, just get excited. Get those dollars ready."

So they are making the best CoD game ever but they have only an image of a character. Instant pre-purchase the most badass hardened mega edition now!

They should take a page from the Rambo game and call it Call of Duty: The Video Game.... lol!

Yawn. What happened to all the realistic tactical shooters like the original Rainbow Six games, Hidden & Dangerous 2 and even SWAT 4???

Yeah, I don't think so. I think Ghosts might have been the last one that I'd buy. I like the Infinity Ward ones better and maybe Titanfall will take its place.

Weren't Sledgehammer the ones that wanted to make a third-person action/adventure CoD game?

I will believe it when I see it for myself. The Call of Duty franchise has gotten far too stale for my liking.

@assclip  I don't know what engine Blops and Ghosts runs on but it's definitely dog shit compared to the MW2 engine. The COD4 WatW MW2 engine looked and performed way better. I don't understand how Treyarch managed to fuck it up.

ryanreynolds
ryanreynolds

@assclip  @assclip  Ironic, they haven't changed the engine since the first CoD game. MW runs on heavily modified Quake 3 engine, and has been upgraded and modified since then. It is however at it's core still  Q3/ IdTech 3 engine.

@2-red  ah! rb6 is what got my hooked on those types of games. no current games can match the brilliance of those older tactical shooters. nothing!

@rafaelwilliam  They will probably say the same thing next year if not more years in the future.

@streetz_86 @hXcShock give the haters a break. If they couldn't hate, they'd have no lives. It's easy to complain when all you do is play games and have no life outside of a virtual one.

@streetz_86 @hXcShock  It takes very little for you to have fun, and lucky for you,you can have the exact same amount of fun on a annual basis yeeeea.

Agreed, everything is dumbed down for the masses to maximize profit... only indie titles provide any innovation these days.

Derbefrier
Derbefrier

@2-red Arena shooter were popular long before Call of Duty.  It has nothing to do with dumbing down anything. these games were never tactical. They have always been arcade shooters.
