Buy a year of PS Plus, get 3 months free

New limited-time offer for Sony's premium network service gives extra months to those who sign up for 12 months by March 4.

Sony is starting off 2013 with a new PlayStation Plus offer. The company today announced that those who buy a 12-month subscription to PlayStation Plus at $50 will receive an extra three months for free. The deal begins today and expires March 4.

A PlayStation Plus subscription includes access to Sony's Instant Game Collection, which features a regularly rotated library of 12 free PS3 titles. These include Little Big Planet 2, Infamous 2, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, and others. Players must keep an active subscription to play the games.

Sony just yesterday released its all-new $300 Classic White PlayStation 3, which features a 500GB hard drive, a matching white controller, and a voucher for a one-year subscription to PS Plus. Those who redeem the voucher during the limited-time promotion will receive the extra three months.

"Buy a year-long sub to a system that will be dated and obsolete by Fall when we release PS4 so we can has s'more of your money!" Is what I'm hearing. As much as devs are harping over needing next-gen tech in order to 'advance' (which is BS), I have no doubt in my worthwhile games will stop releasing for the PS3 ~very~ soon. PS+ may have some benefit for PS4, but it will likely need more than what's left on your sub by that point to build its library and be worth the price of entry, and that's only for those insane enough to drop the inevitably huge amount of money the system itself will cost.

Sony is getting desperate... I remember my frustration after i bought uncharted, gravity rush and then suddenly they were free for ps+ users.

Great offer, now if I could just get a god damn PS3 for a reasonable price. My 160gb Slim kicked the bucket last year, and I can't quite force myself to shell out another $300.

to be honest i just use my PS+ for the discounts XD which have save me money and "free"games are just a plus for me. The only thing i hate is that it killed my HDD space DX but now i have a 1 Tb HDD which it is half full :p.

I would purchase the play station network pass if they offered a better experience,  if the interface quality was better, it doesn't have to be like XBL but getting into matches, how they handle friends, could stand some tweaking. They do everything else just fine. Could have some more exclusive content like xbox does with their live streaming.

If i was not getting my money's worth outta xbl - I just wouldnt pay for it. I have purchased a few games off their market but they were old ones and psn deals have not had anything appealing for me at least.

I hate to say it but i really think that with the next gen PS they will start charging for psn like MS - maybe not at first but very soon afterwards. To good of a revenue opportunity not to take advantage of it. I wish both were free - lord knows we have already paid for it.

Even though I still have ten months left on my PS+ subscription and even though I only own a Vita (no PS3), I'll definitely be taking advantage of this and extending my subscription. I see no reason to ever cancel PS+...it's definitely well worth measly $50/year.

when they include PS4 games with the PS plus package I hope they don't increase the fee alot

I never quite have $50 laying around and always have to get the 3 month subscriptions.

That's an amazing deal, but it's hard to believe someone wouldn't have a PS3 after all this time.

The PSN has really come around from what it used to be. I'm still don't like the interface but that is such a small thing to complain about.

It would be nice if the story mentioned if the deal was open to other countries.

Definitely taking advantage of this. I have no plans to ever cancel my ps plus.

oh weird.  I didn't know you had to keep your subscription active to play the games.  Even if you've already downloaded them?

If I find myself too rich by the time March 4th rolls around, I will invest in this. I recall enjoying that free demo everyone got of PSN+ after the whole hacking crisis.

Lets see $50.00 for PSN+ and a bunch of free games as long as you keep the service vs $60.00 for live with a bunch of free ads as long as you keep the service... Hmmmmm decisions decisions

@HappyBB US Only. Cause UK had a deal over the holidays for 25% off the sub. price which we didn't get.

@TheDoc916 if you have another $50 you can still buy another year and the 15 months will stack. Would ease your worries about subscription coming to an end for a VERY long time

@JukedSolid Anything on the PSN that says PS+ exclusive you have to be subscribed or you loose access to that content.

@JukedSolid Yes, if you have them on your harddrive but do not have an active subscription, it will tell you to renew your subscription.

@COPMAN221ISBACK Let's put it this way.

SONY is a company that is losing money, a failing business (as far as finance goes).

Microsoft is a company that is making money, a growing and successful business (as far as finance goes).

As a gamer you may compare the two game consoles subscriptions being offered and think that SONY is the better of the two.  From a gamer perspective, that might be true.

However, from a business perspective you will notice that SONY is having to give stuff away and give major discounts in order to draw in their customers.  Microsoft, on the other-hand is not having to follow those business practices, and so is able make a profit.  Microsoft has a more profitable business plan without the need to create huge discounts on their Xbox related products and services.

In the end, which company do you think will be in a position to better leverage future game developers and new technologies?  Which company do you think will take more risks?  Which one is more likely to be here in the long-term?

@COPMAN221ISBACK I generally don't pay for than $30-35 for a year of live (Amazon has a good deal going now), but yeah, it aggravates me to no end that paying subscribers to XBL are bombarded with just as many ads as non-subscribers.

Toysoldier34
Toysoldier34

@PayneKiller @Toysoldier34 I know, I have only paid for the 3 month two times so far and had like a month off in between since I mostly game on PC. I just didn't have a full $50 to sink into it at the time.

I may end up getting this deal though.

Toysoldier34
Toysoldier34

@svaubel @JukedSolid If it is free content you loose access to it. But if you buy games that are discounted through the service then you still keep them. I have made back my PSN+ subscription in savings alone. The free games are just a great bonus.

@Landsharkk Microsoft may be better off financially in the games area right now. But at the rate the two companies are going, Sony is going to beat MS by a long shot. I mean there have been more ps3s sold worldwide than xbox 360s now, and the ps3 started a year later. Sony is really stepping up its game now and making its customers extremely satisfied. It's not my fear that the playstation brand is going to die out, but quite the opposite. If microsoft keeps doing what it's doing, It's not going to have many loyal customers left.

Meta-Gnostic

@Landsharkk Which company is currently delivering the most exclusive core games? Which company also has a handheld console available? Which company just added a webstore for their online service? Which company just completely redid their digital store on the console? Which company has better and more open policies for developers?

Tabain
Tabain

@Landsharkk This is wrong on so many levels in regards to business plans, so I'm just going to go the sarcastic route and state that all publishers on Steam are about to go bankrupt because they regularly have wide reaching sales.

COPMAN221ISBACK
COPMAN221ISBACK

@SlimeSwayze @COPMAN221ISBACK  Oh I too am on live "Enforcer266", but I'm not going to kid myself and pretend like it's so much better than PSN. Microsoft really has nerve to place ads they they are charging companies for on a service that WE are paying for. At least give us something like PSN with free games as long as you keep the subscription. Oh wait this is greedy microsoft we are talking about.

COPMAN221ISBACK
COPMAN221ISBACK

@Tabain don't waste your time trying to explain it to the one system fanboys. They will defend Microsoft no matter how blatantly they get ripped off. My favorite reply is "I don't mind the ads". I guess the same idiots would not mind if they purchased a car or house and the seller placed ads all over it and made money off of  them. SMH!!

@bizuit @SlimeSwayze @COPMAN221ISBACK Even being little boxes, they are distracting and the area could be used for more important stuff instead of those ads. They could have more of the stuff you own available to you without having to go through extra menus just so they can put ads in your face.

@SlimeSwayze @COPMAN221ISBACK The adds on Live don't bother me because they never get in the way, until they MAKE me watch them before I can move on to something else is when I will find them annoying, but until they quit being just a few little boxes on each page I could really care less

SlimeSwayze
SlimeSwayze

@COPMAN221ISBACK @SlimeSwayze I agree.  The XBL dashboard is an abomination.  One of the big reasons I won't be supporting MS next gen is because of how they've turned the 360 into an ad revenue box.
