Bungie wants your Destiny characters to transfer from one console generation to the next

Investment lead Tyson Green says studio is "really interested" in making sure your PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 character will migrate forward to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

by

If you're planning to buy the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version of Bungie's upcoming shooter Destiny this September but hope to upgrade to the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 some day, here's some good news. Bungie investment lead Tyson Green told GameSpot that the studio is hoping to allow players to migrate their characters from one generation to the next.

"We're really interested in making sure that a last-gen character can move to next-gen just because there's gonna be a lot of people that buy Destiny on, say, a PS3 or a 360 and then they get a PS4 for Christmas and it's like, well, 'Don't tell me I've just wasted my last hundred hours there.' We don't want to lock people in," Green said in a recent Q&A session with GameSpot's Carolyn Petit during a trip to the company's offices.

It's unclear if such a character migration would be supported inside the console family exclusively (i.e. PS3 to PS4 or Xbox 360 to Xbox One) or if your character's stats would move forward regardless of which platform you play on. We'll have to wait to find out.

Green also teased that Bungie is keen on the idea of introducing an in-game player economy for Destiny, but pointed out that this feature won't be there at launch. "We're really excited about doing a player economy," he said. "But for launch, we're going to be restricting it to trading items between your own characters. We have a lot to learn about the way the economy works, and also the security situation, both for our own systems and platforms."

For more on Destiny, be sure to read GameSpot's just-published preview of the game. A beta for Destiny begins this summer first on PS3 and PS4 (but not because Bungie favors Sony over Microsoft), before the full game is released across all consoles on September 9.

Microsoft won't allow it unfortunately.

Go ahead and release this game on PC AT LAUNCH already. Cause nobody wants to buy a next gen console which has like 2 games thats exclusive (and they both suck) and then pay $50 a year to play your game online.  I know some morons is gonna buy it for Xbox 360 and PS3. But yeah smart people want it for PC and this game is pirate proof since its 100% online.

Since its not coming to the PC, Im staying away from this game. I am sure it will do great

sigh... I think another year must pass till we are done with last gen and devs start to produce some HQ stuff.

Would be smart if characters could transfer between console families

A lot of 360 players are switching to PS4

Game also doesn't look that impressive. Still looks like a last gen game, so I'll grab it for last gen, because I'm not paying a monthly fee on my PS4 to play a multiplayer game. I'll just play it for free on my PS3 instead. Fuck PSN+

I'm sure Bungie hopes for many things, but it's Activision that makes the decisions. Will they allow this? Not without paying extra, I bet.

Yeah the chances of me buying the game a second time is slim. It would have to be EPICALLY awesome to make me want to anyway.

all i want is an option to remove lensflares. i tired of games with lensflares without the option to remove them. i don´t understand why devs or any player would like lensflares, they so dam annoying. games like bf3/bf4, dying light...have a retarded level of lensflares.

I was planning on trying this game when I get the PS4 anyways. I never saw the point of releasing this on last gen consoles. I think Destiny will be a system seller and one of the few must have games for next gen.

I have it pre ordered for the Xbox One but I might also get it for the 360. Only a few of my friend's upgraded to an Xbox One so I figure that I'd still hang with my friends on the 360. If I can use the same character between both consoles that would be great. I still wish there was PC version buy oh well.

I could see from PS3 to 360 or x1 to PS4, but enough with last generation.

This wouldn't possibly be a tactic to get users to purchase the game twice would it? Do users  even need to purchase the game a 2nd time?...I suspect they would.

Are any discounts being offered to migrating consumers?

The comments regarding 'holding back potential'  of games such as Destiny to make them still come out in this generation, and labeling that as bad decision making, I utterly disagree with.  Remember these are huge AAA games, they take many years of development, long before developers would have had anything tangible & concrete to work with regarding the next gen consoles.

These developers couldn't just put a halt to new projects near the end of this console cycle and just chill a couple years, waiting for the new technology to exist, then start working again.  They have to produce to survive.

And people worried about the limitations of this generation?  Have you played Skyrim, Rage, Fallout, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Gears of War, and the list goes on and on?  What, are last gen caliber games no longer any good, next gen is so amazingly different?

I seriously must question the potential of this game if it's going to be restricted to the confines of last generation consoles. The architectures are completely different.

Aaaand I'll be getting it on PS4.....

honestly game should have been targeted at PS4, X1 and PC.....

As if holding back this games potential to satisfy last gen gamers wasn't enough.

Even though they've been making all of there always online games free in terms of online..... If your gonna troll about ps+ at least use something valid.

Honestly, that's what I'll probably do if I even get this game.

@KamuiFei The point is that there are over 10 times more last gen console owners than current gen owners, and that will remain so for the next couple years.

@rasterror  From what i understand, Destiny is cross-platform with psn and xblive.  I just read that from another article somewhere.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@rasterror   I hope seanwil545 reads your comment, it sounds like there's a consumer that wants to buy Destiny not twice but 3 times... :)  Unless you work in Bungie's marketing department, and are trying to subversively convince people to buy multiple copies of the game.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@seanwil545 Yeah, it seems weird to assume people would throw out their 360 immediately after getting an Xbox One, and would desperately need a data transfer.

Rage looked AMAZING on consoles & it ran at a smooth 60 frames. I wish the story was GOOD or should I say NOT non-existent.

Mbrans25den

@spacecadet25  Those games you mentioned didn't even look that great when they were current, especially Bethesda games. To answer your question though, yes next gen should be different. Not just in respects to visuals and graphics but also in design and key elements of gameplay. I think having a "ported" experience cheapens the concept of the next gen consoles and anybody that has invested in them.

@MJ12-ConspiracyThe quote, "honestly game should have been targeted at PS4, X1 and PC..."  I don't get that sentiment.  You wanted a game targeted at PS4 & Xbox One when the game's development started long before these consoles even existed?

seanwil545
seanwil545

@MJ12-Conspiracy

I have to agree...if only for the fact you gave PCs a nod. Previous gen over consoles over PC is pretty lame.

Looks like I'll be playing on PS4 also.

rasterror
rasterror

Yeah but there are far more PS3's and 360's out there which means more money for them to make.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@wookiegr   or they could be holding back a really good and polished 360 version, but are diverting time to making an obligatory port of the game for the Xbox One as well, a console that didn't exist when they started making this game.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@delta5931true, MS wouldn't allow it, though perhaps Sony would allow PS3 to Xbone transfer, Sony isn't rigid that way

LOL...read it...and migration does make for some good marketing for Bungie. Nothing happens by mistake in this gaming industry.

rasterror

Lol. No, not all. I just want to play with my friends. I know I sound stupid for wanting multiple copies but a lot of my friends aren't upgrading yet.

seanwil545

@spacecadet25 @seanwil545

Agreed, especially seeing the previous gen consoles are still going strong with new titles...Titanfall, Watchdogs, Destiny...etc.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@Mbrans25den @spacecadet25  I agree next gen games should have new design elements and types of experiences, but name one that does?  Even ones that are exclusively for the new consoles (with no last gen to "hold them back"), none of them have anything groundbreaking (that I know of).

And the games I listed didn't look great when they came out?  Gears of War back in 2006 (or whatever year it was, I was totally floored by the visuals), Rage from a few years ago?  And I hear Last of Us was amazing visually.

And again, keep in mind the next gen consoles were not finalized around when many of the games coming out now started development.  Are they supposed to scrap those games entirely after years of development and start over b/c next gen is here?

@rasterror

Their not really held back...in a way it's a good thing. They would have felt overwhelm if there was no limit.

Trying to be creative in a limited environment is a good way to improve creativity.

At least that's the way I see it.

Mbrans25den
Mbrans25den

@spacecadet25 @Mbrans25den  Some may disagree but, Infamous: Second Son had different mechanics I had never experienced. In particular with the use of spray painting. Albeit a simple game mechanic I can see other developers utilizing and expanding on different concepts involving the touch pad and motion controls. Also, with the added horsepower I would suspect to see more expansive worlds, physics, intuitive a.i. and lifelike npc's.

The initial releases of GOW and Mass Effect were revolutionary, I agree. However, the PC counterparts, in regards to Skyrim, Fallout, and Mass Effect 2/3, were less so.

I certainly understand their marketing strategy. They will be able to cover a larger market including both gens. I am, however, biased toward the consumer's view of this strategy. It is possible they could have made some additions to the gameplay mechanics and environments. Or even revamp the engine and have it geared specifically to allocate resources towards an x86 systems and their hardware. At this point it is difficult to ascertain the differences between the two generations. The upcoming beta release may give insight on the differences.
