Bungie founder reveals new game

Alex Seropian and new studio Industrial Toys take the lid off Morning Star, due for iOS devices in spring 2013.

Bungie founder Alex Seropian has big plans for his first game with new studio Industrial Toys. The company today announced its first game, Morning Star, a sci-fi shooter for iOS devices that aims to "raise the bar for mobile graphics" when it arrives during spring 2013.

"With Morning Star, we're looking to change expectations for what kind of experience core gamers get from their mobile devices," Seropian said in a statement.

Morning Star was built from the ground up for touch-based controls and is billed as a "complete reimagining of the shooter."

It is set 120 years into the future (around 2132) and brings players aboard the MSRV-Joplin, a research vessel equipped with heavy weaponry. Players seek out a mysterious signal, and as is often the case, disaster takes hold and gamers are thrust into the middle of an intergalactic war.

Morning Star runs on the Unreal Engine. For more on the game, check out its first screenshots below.

Lets face it, this game is going to sell million cause no matter how we can say console are vastly superior to the stinking Iphones; Ipad, Tablets and Smartphones, a lot of you will be tempted to buy it regardless, cause I hate Need For Speed Most Wanted on smartphone previously, but now I'm playing it, cause it offers the most challenging races compared to the Xbox 360 version..... and its a few dollar....... while pact more difficult races than the console version....... and brag in front of my friends that my smartphone can run the game..... despicable me! Some of the most interesting game are sadly no where even on the innovative 3DS but on Android, iOs and now Window 8(still young)

looks like another marathon or halo already.  but plenty of casual people will download the free version and not pay for the $1.99 version.

I'm all for casual gamers getting their piece of the pie, but Bungie seriously? Thank god for 343.

Neat. Though zero points for story originality.

Next we will see Angry Birds GOTY. Not long after that droves of inarticulate quasi-gamers will flood the streets, bumping into one another, because they are too sucked into their "SMART"phone games to pay any attention to the real world.

sounds like the zombie apocalypse to me.

Ill ride it out at home on my consoles and PC fully immersed in my quality gaming experience.

Do any proper gamers actually enjoy games on smart phones? I find them nothing but tedious, especially the "touch screen joy sticks". I hear about how there's so much profit in these smart phone games yet I've not found someone who genuinely enjoys them. I had a quick go on GTA on the Ipad, and I thought it was awful, just frustratingly difficult to control. Touch screen is definitely not the way of the future, I sure hope companies start realising that. I can type about 5 texts, on a blackberry keyboard, in the time it takes a person to type one on say an Iphone touch screen.

Step 1: Abandon multi-million dollar game series.

Step 2: Build mobile phone game.

Step 3: Profit?

A Sci-fi shooter...?  No way!

Not really surprising thought because Bungie hit the big time making one of the few good games for Macs.  Pretty ironic they ended up an MS in house studio.

MS is pushing tablets in a new direction with Surface. the pro tablets are basically legit PCs in your hand.... i see most tablets going that direction in the future.

not saying Surface tablets are good, just the idea behind them is.

After all this time and wait to hear what bungie has come up with....it ends up being an iOS Game? Are you F'ing kidding me?!?!

@joshphillips It is not Bungie. This is Industrial Toys, a development house started by the founder of Bungie(he left Bungie in 2002).

However, iOS?? When will developers learn that gamers hate using a flat piece of glass as their input device??

@GamerMani Translation:' PC gaming is dying because iOS and Android are where developers are putting their priorities.  But the PC has a much more appropriate control scheme for gaming than touchscreen devices.'

I totally disagree with the first part of your statement and agree with the second.

@residude they do sell well, its gaming for people who arn't core gamers, its a handheld console where the user isn't picking at graphics or any really detailed tec specs, and because so many people have smart devices these days, any game or app is avaliable to such a huge market, the way I see it, people will look at an app, be conviced that it's worth spending a few bucks so they don't get bored on the train, they don't necessarily sit there at home playing them for hours on end and that's a reason why they purchase them. For me personally I do agree mobile games suck, they are terrible (for the core gamer)

NeonNinja

I enjoy them.  A lot.  They are what's keeping from purchasing traditional handhelds.

@residude Of course "touchscreen joy stick" will suck. Games designed for touch, on other hand [c wat i] will work better. Typing is a relic of past and will become redundant going forward when voice recognition is built into every phone. It is like saying I can cover 5 blocks in my Porsche in the time it takes a 747 to make a 180 degree turn on the runway. But yeah, they haven't figured out how to best use touch devices, yet. I got a feeling touch devices will become redundant too, pretty soon.

@malec_1  @joshphillips When iOS  games stop selling so well.  Face it, everyone and their mothers has a smartphone or tablet.  The casual gaming market on these systems is massive and it's not going to change anytime soon.

@NeonNinja  @residude yep, 3DS and psp 3000 was the last handheld my siblings owned, when HTC One X came, I was stunned that they are lots of quality games found on smartphone, when Iphone 5 came, Infinity Blade came, and I played more of these games simply because I had more time on bus than at home...... and people tend to look more interest on what I'm playing then looking at me funny holding a PSP cause they themselves are holing a smartphone.

I guess you guys have lots of free time, so lucky you...... T-T

@Jedilink109  @residude That is cool. not that I am defending games on mobile devices, but this does seem to quell the argument from crappy controls.  thanks for sharing
