Bungie discussing Destiny at GDC

Creative leads will open up on design process from concept to production for action game during Game Developers Conference in March.

Bungie will discuss its all-new and still-unannounced franchise--believed to be titled Destiny--in late March during a 2013 Game Developers Conference talk at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.

Presumably, a more formal announcement for Destiny is planned for sometime prior to the talk. Neither Bungie nor Activision had returned requests for comment at press time.

Bungie writer and design director Joe Staten and art director Christopher Barrett will lead the discussion, titled "Brave New World: New Bungie IP." The talk will focus on Bungie's design process and world-building techniques, running from concept to production.

Those in attendance will get a glimpse inside Bungie's new world, though it's not clear what state the game will be in during the briefing. Additionally, the event description suggests the next ten years of games from Bungie will be based in the Destiny universe.

To date, Bungie has released just one piece of artwork (above right) for Destiny, but speculation has run rampant. A leaked marketing document in November described Destiny as a "fun and accessible" game with a "deep, tangible, and relatable" universe compared to Star Wars. The game is also described as "social at its core."

According to the document, Destiny's plot revolves around an alien ship bent on destroying Earth and the "knights" tasked with defending what's left of humanity. The document also shows images bearing the Destiny logo along with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 icons.

Destiny is Bungie's first project as part of a 10-year publishing deal with Call of Duty company Activision. Legal documents from May suggested that the game will be released for the Xbox 360 in 2013, with a 2014 release slated for the PlayStation 3.

The game is reportedly "quite like Halo."

Article is incorrect, all prior reporting stated the Alien Ship was a mysterious protector

As long as there's an obligatory Marathon reference, I'm cool

I'm kinda pissed they went to Activision. That is all.

Looks like Lost Planet meets Killzone meets Halo. I wish they could give the new IP a different, darker atmosphere to scare the 10 year olds away.

Oh crap!!!  Bungie rebooting Lost Planet?  Awesome.

there is way too much hype and high expectation from Bungie and that a recipe for dissapointment, the bar have been set way to high

Bungie will always have my support in anything that they do. Halo 3 is one of my favorite games of all time because of it's multiplayer. I'm sure this will be a great game.

The more and more I hear about this game the more and more I keep picturing the game becoming what Huxley was attempting to bring the the FPS genre before was cancelled.

Just a correction to the plot summary in the article, the alien ship isn't bent on destroying earth, it is actually protecting earth - and they presumably don't know why

Since Halo, I trust Bungie and will continue to be interested in what they make.  I believe this to be a pretty good company the works well on their stories while trying to always improve.  I can't wait to hear more about this game!

I remember the first time I crashed landed on Halo... surrounded by dead marines and the faint jet screams of approaching Banshees.

No game Bungie makes now will beat halo 1 or 2,

halo 3, and reach were amazing 9/10 games and even they are no where near as good as halo 1, 2, but i really do think this game could be better than halo 3 and reach but i could be wrong.

I will always thank Bungie for the great times i had with halo and i will follow them no matter what game they make,  Bungie are legends to us Halo fans and i can't wait to see if they kill of Halo, but i really doubt they will but they do have the means to achieve this.

I would really like to know more about this game, looking forward to GDC.

I doubt they'll reveal anything big like a gameplay video or trailer; game developers are usually pretty particular in regards to how they reveal their game, and I doubt a smaller venue like GDC would be deemed a fitting place to release any in-depth info or media.

any news if this is going multiplatform or is it still gonna be xbox exclusive?

Huehuehue I can't wait to see what this game will bring :)

Bring it on.  Bungie has proven their quality to me through their previous games.  I'll gladly pony up a pre-order for any of their titles.

It seems like Bungie has written a CoD-like contract with Activision, only making games from one franchise, just like Treyarch and Infinity Ward only makes CoD games. If Destiny is good, then it's not a big deal, but I principally don't like a developer being tied to only one franchise. It doesn't seem to be coming to PC, which makes me indifferent to its quality, since I won't be playing it.

About time! Of course, Bungie.net is going to get the first look. But I'm glad we have a time frame.

I wonder if Activision is going to be pressuring Bungie to make each Destiny game exactly the same and spit a new one out each year...

@YYankee one of the innovators that stated "Sure, we could make an FPS work on a console."  I just have to disagree with you on Halo 3.  Hands down Halo 2 multiplayer was better.

@WTA2k5 It wouldn't be good for an official reveal. Which is why I say watch for news in the next month or two.

@theteacher7 Look at the top right corner of the page. You will see the title: Destiny, and under that will be PS3 and Xbox360 links.

So yes. It is multiplatform.

@PixelAddict

???  343 studios was able to make a better halo than bungie ever was, and it was their very first game as a studio.... how is that quality?

@weapon_d00d816

I seriously doubt it as Bungie pretty much had their choice of publishers (yet still chose Activision for some reason) and still are independent (ie not owned by a publishing house). Given what went down with Halo and Microsoft, I am sure they kept a good deal of control over the important details in their contract. Plus this is Bungie we are talking about, they would not even let Microsoft employees into their area while they were working on Halo.

Maxd76

@weapon_d00d816 I'd like to think that Bungie wouldn't enter into a deal like that and would maintain a good quality for any games they develop

@Geminon @PixelAddict

Umm Geminon - only delusional people would seriously think Halo 4 was better than Bungie developed Halo games. 343 has killed Halo MP with the glitchy lag fest that is Halo 4.

I've already decided I'm not buying Halo 5 and 6 after seeing how horribly they have coded the MP component of Halo 4. The Halo 4 online auto connection search and bandwidth detection is the worst on XBL.

Compare hit detection off host in Halo Reach with that in Halo 4 and then try to tell me that Halo 4 is better than a Bungie made Halo game.

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@GeminonYou realize a good majority of the 343 folk are directly from Bungie, right?  They were handed the keys of a pretty nice sports car and added some nitrus.

Halo 4 was a solid game, but Bungie did the heavy lifting of the franchise.  343 did a fine job in carrying on an established tradition.

@Maxd76 @weapon_d00d816 Oh please, Bungie is the same company run by a feministic woman CEO who wants to permaban people for simply making sexist jokes. You think that Bungie has integrity??? LOL

only fanboy idiots think halo 4 is bad.

been playing halo 4 2-3 times a week since release, and have never had a single laggy match. sounds like you need to pony up for more bandwidth.

uh... no. sorry. it isnt. halo 3 was easily the worst in the series for singleplayer, and halo reach was easily the worst in the series for multiplayer.
