Bungie coy on real-money options for Destiny

Developer dodges question about microtransactions for new shooter, but says in-game rewards will be earned.

Bungie has dodged a question regarding how real-world currency will be used in its 2014 shooter Destiny. In the developer's latest Mail Sack feature, a user asked what impact real-life money will have on the in-game world--if it is used at all--to which Bungie offered the following response.

"What we can tell you right now is that the rewards you will gain by playing Destiny--and playing it well--will be earned," Bungie said. "You will carve them from the hides of your enemies, after you stomp them into the ground of your favorite destinations."

Destiny publisher Activision is no stranger to microtransactions for its major online-focused franchises. The company recently introduced micropayments to Call of Duty, while Diablo III and World of Warcraft both support real-world money through auction houses, among other features.

Elsewhere in the feature, Bungie explained that Destiny is in a pre-alpha state of development, meaning, "the game is alive, but not fully grown." The studio added that it continues to explore new ideas for the game and said "there's a lot more work left to do."

Destiny is officially due out in 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Though the game is cross-generational, Bungie has said all versions of the game will contain the "full vision" of the gameworld.

I wouldn't mind microtransitions I could always use a suit or some new parts until I unlock new better looking gear

No real money...Bungie, NONE! Only in-game money, which cannot be bought.

AS long as its not P2W and they don't pull that random card BS like the ME3 multiplayer, I'm down to buy vanity gear or mounts.  Pretty much as long as I can opt out and not impact my experience playing the game.

im a loyal XBOX customer, also have a PS3 so shutup, but you can't count me out of this game AND XBOX ALTOGETHER if you start pulling this microstransaction crap like the pc! i might as well buy lottery tickets!

They're providing a free, persistent online experience self described as MMO-like in nature.  In this day and age if you think there won't be micro-transactions in this game you're just fooling yourself.  Plus those types of things are known early on, I mean how the game will generate revenue is something that is answered before the publisher cuts you a check so just by them trying to dodge the question you know the answer is yes.  If it was no that would be a positive for them and they'd just come right out and tell you.  So if they say anything other than an unequivocal no, then the answer is yes, there will be micro-transactions.

I'm so excited for this game but microtransactions and pay to win would probably be a deal breaker for me. It ruins the very core of the experience.

Well, until they announce this for PC, I will not support it in any way. Microtransactions, while silly, is slowly becoming the norm. You can try and boycott it, but there will always be people out there that will go for them. Which is why they are becoming a trend.

Shit guys, I REALLY HOPE that ppl send a message like they did to M$ and the "XBone180"

Simply put, do not support any microtransaction feature at all, please guys im imploring you, dont support it, and hopefully in the future they can scrap these bogus ripoff scams

Keep your wallets closed, we have gotta send a message to the industry about these shitty business practices

$60+Microtransactions (gear or xp boost) = no bueno

If 100% cosmetic then ok have fun

Unless the game is gonna be Free To Play (it isn't), no friggen micro-transactions FFS.

I sure hope any micro-transactions that make their way into the game are relatively insignificant. If I feel like my progress is hampered simply because I'm not willing to splash the extra cash then Destiny will be destined for the used games shelves. You know, because we can. :-)

And there goes any appeal I had for the game. At least now I don't have to choose between this or Division.

MadMike2869

I may buy their game but i will not participate in micro transactions, but i will only buy the game if i can play without microtransactions. I hate games u cant complete or progress in without buying this or that, or hey u need another lvl to do this buy the exp u need here. If bungie goes that route i definitely will not participate.

BlueRaptor7

A real money AH is palatable. But microtransactions? Even if they are purely cosmetic, it's still a complete sham that we churn out $60 for a game, and still are withheld pieces of said game.

I will seriously consider other options for entertainment if this is their route.

I would rather call of duty black ops 2 continue with a model of releasing maps every two months, or halo which Ive supported all along also, than have to buy a new 60 disc every year for minimal upgrades than can be accomplished through dlc updates? Ive yet to see DLC live up to its name and truly extend a game. They could still be making maps and updating Black Ops one, or Halo, 2, or Three...When they want to complain and come up with new revenue streams because devlopment costs are too high, why do they choose to stop devolpment on a finished product? Did Black ops four DLC sell so badly they had no money left to invest in DLC5? All i hear now a days from game news sites are publishers defending their shady ethics, and doublespeaking about their invisible problems. I support continued devolpment of known blockbusters, not trying to force the next big one down our allready saturated throats.

I hate to say this but Microtranscations are most likely going to be used in this game as it a free to play MMO (from what we know). MMO's need to keep their servers up constantly which costs money so they need a way to make sure that they keep getting money to keep the servers up through either Microtranscations or some sort of subscription fee. I just swear that the only Microtranscations in the game (if it has them) are cosmetic only and don't give players a better fighting chance (like Guild Wars 2)

Play-Pretend
Play-Pretend

Its just a rumor, and I really hope its false... I love Bungie, but Micro-transactions are no good for this type of console game... It would just make the game unbalanced, and I love Bungie for their balanced gameplay...

jack00

There was a list of all the micro transaction codes they intened to put in the game, some dude posted it here like a week ago. Just man up Bungie and tell everyone you intend to fill this game with microtransaction.

I was interested in Destiny before I saw those microtransactions announcement. I guess this is one game i'll skip, i'll just go play the other 44 games on my tracked list that doesn'T fk me in the ass when I play it.

jayjay444

Simply put if there's Micro Transactions I don't buy the game, I refuse to buy any game with them init, i'm a big halo fan and i love bungie but I will not support rip off scams like this.

@DemoKnight10656 The thing is, 10 years ago, those suits or new parts would have been unlockable in the game. It's annoying how a lot of these so-called "bonuses" have to be "unlocked" by spending real money these days.

ApocaLeepse
ApocaLeepse

@SpazldNinjaDude To be honest, I won't mind them putting in the ability to buy your ranks, much like Assassin's Creed III does, as long as it doesn't interfere with people like me who actually enjoy ranking up the good old fashioned way.

RighteousWoman

@idestroycensors Like PC? Not sure where you have been the last 2-3 years but micro-transactions are already everywhere you look on the Xbox. If that is a deal breaker for you then trust me on this one, don't buy next gen consoles as its only going to get worse. I don't like them either but unfortunately a LOT of people do and they wind up making serious coin on a lot of these transactions. More profits = more micro-transactions and more micro-transactions = more profit. Its a vicious circle and until people put their foot down and stop buying them, your only going to see more and more of them released.

OldKye

@Geminon Or it could just be the usual extra costumes and gun skins that you don't need and don't effect the game, that almost every shooter or maybe even so far as almost ever game has.

I'd wait to see what it is first before you pass judgment most games have some kind of add on you just may not have noticed cause the game had all it's bells and whistles to begin with.

Thankfully no, good old gaming has gone to www.gog.com.  DRM free to boot.  I can't believe how many new-ish games are on there alongside the well... actually old ones that are still good imho.

LesserAngel

@derrick5277 Even cosmetic is BS if you still had to pay $60 for the game, why should I have to pay $2 just to change the color of my armor?

Redrivar

@PolyboticTheif  What about DLC's like Borderlands 1 + 2, where DLC's are massive new maps, storylines, and quest packages that do extend the life of the game?  I'm totally against unfair and overpriced DLC, but when its done right, I do believe in supporting it.  That said, only time will tell with a game so far from release.

santinegrete

@jack00  You see? that's why they dodged the questions about this. Not to question your opinion, it's just a fact that people hate Microtransactions. If it was in my power and I really wanted the game this wouldn't matter very much... but damn I still can't believe it's not coming to PC. What were they thinking?!

SpazldNinjaDude
SpazldNinjaDude

@ApocaLeepse @SpazldNinjaDude Ok, buying your ranks with in game money, you have to earn through playing the game...then maybe. But paying real money, no, bad idea and stupid, never worked before, people hate it, and lots of gamers will just not buy the game if they do that. What else? Umm....everyone tell Bungie this is a bad idea, and you will boycott (even if you won't) if they put it in, it will stop Activition trying to make Bungie put it in (even though Bungie can just tell them where to put it).

@LesserAngel @derrick5277 If you're buying the game you should be getting cosmetic items.

Regardless, any game with microtransactions is a no-buy for me.

@LesserAngel @derrick5277 True i know there are more like you that feel this way.Me coming from ffxi where we min/max stats in mmo= our gear never matches lol, so I'm used to it.I do understand where you are coming from.

@SpazldNinjaDude @ApocaLeepse if it's done right, meaning unlike other microtransaction systems that pretty much force to to P2W, and the game's quality is high; I don't see why the game won't be successful.  I think this game is going to be a true next gen experience.

@OldKye @idestroycensors @Geminon

last time i checked, it is being published by activision... and next to EA, they are about the worst perpetrators of abhorrent micro policies.

i absolutely expect there to be guns for sale, armor for sale, cosmetic costumes, XP boosts, skill boosts.... there is just no doubt in my mind after seeing this.

OldKye

@idestroycensors @OldKye @Geminon Did I say "buy it" or wait and see what it is? lol if they got a hundred skins lined up to sell they would be lying if they said "No what you buy is what you get".
