Bungie 'actively engaged' in new IP, Halo sequels

Now-independent studio tells <i>Develop</i> magazine its dev teams are "running full-speed" on new projects, as planned.

by

Shortly after Halo 3 went on sale in North America in late September, much of Bungie Studios' staff went on a long-overdue vacation. Only a few were on hand when the developer dropped the news bombshell that it was amicably separating from Microsoft. The unprecedented deal made Bungie a totally independent operation, a status it had not enjoyed since the 1990s, when it released Myth and the Marathon series.

However, the agreement didn't mean that Bungie was walking away from Halo, the series that made it a household name. "Bungie and Microsoft have forged a deep and long-term development and publishing relationship focused on the continued success of the Halo franchise," the company said in a statement. "It is also the intent of both parties to expand their partnership to include new IP created and owned by Bungie."

Now, with Bungie employees snapping back into position, the plans laid out in the Bungie/Microsoft separation agreement are apparently proceeding apace. After largely shunning the US media, Bungie studio manager Harold Ryan told British-based Develop magazine that "We're actively engaged with the senior staff here on a couple of new IPs right now, but the team that can generate cool Halo games is still running full-speed as well."

Although hard details on any new Halo games were hard to come by, Ryan did sound optimistic about the franchise's future. "Both I and some of the more senior guys from the original Halo game have deep piles of game designs for the Halo universe that we are excited to build at some point," he explained. "If the stars align and motivations are good, and the platforms are right, we'll do them... We don't have a shortage of people happy to make Halo games." So far, the only Halo projects on the horizon are Ensemble Studios' real-time strategy Xbox 360 game Halo Wars, and the mystery-shrouded Peter Jackson-produced project set in the game's sci-fi universe.

However, as the split indicated, Ryan said Bungie is suffering a degree of Halo fatigue. "Obviously there are guys that have shipped Halo games for 10 years, and they are definitely ready to work on new IPs or create new things." He did not elaborate on what said IPs might be.

they should bring back marathon. and leave halo alone for a little bit, at least until the next xbox but for 360 they should bring back marathon or make a totally new IP.

I didn't think they would make another halo.Even though Master Chief doesn't die, the battle is pretty much over. Although if they manage to make it good, I'm all for it.

They should take a break from Halo and bring it back in a couple of years with a BANG! As long as it comes out on the 360!

i love halo but bungie but seriously they need to do something non related halo is awsome but i think they milked it enough for now and i dont blame them for being burnt out they have done nothing but halo for years now its time for something new and since they are sticking with microsoft ms will most likely fund their projects bungie is a very talented developer thats at least on par with bioware

They are making a Halo movie, but from what I heard and researched on it's going to take place in the first Halo game....I would have to agree with most people who say games shouldn't be made into movies like DOA, Doom, Tomb Raider and so on but these guys have done there homework. I mean they have a great Director and the script was even writen by Bungie itself so you know it will stay true to the Halo Universe. Thats why the movie was put off for so long because all the sponsores that wanted to make the movie wanted to change things but Bungie wouldn't let them, lol all Bungie did was let them read the script (supervised) then took it away so they couldn't even mess with it.

"From what I heard, Tomb Raider was miserable, even with the Taco Bell promotion going on (heehee)" The first movie did well in the box office, and in my opinion the second movie was better than the first. Paramount blames the 2nd movie's bad box office on the poor quality of the Tomb Raider game that was released close to the opening of the movie. Regardless, I would welcome a 3rd Tomb Raider movie.

i hope they don't make a halo movie; it would probably suck. but a gears of war movie... that would be awesome!

Halo Wars is a prequel to Halo 1. It takes place between the books "Contact Harvest" and "The Fall of Reach," and I'm sure you would know this if you actually did your research. As for the movie, I say skip it. The Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive pictures were a flop, and Doom didn't look that special to me. From what I heard, Tomb Raider was miserable, even with the Taco Bell promotion going on (heehee). I may sound pessimistic, but video-game-spinoff movies just don't seem to work.

I wonder what will happen when sony tries to buy them. You know they did try Halo 1 on the ps2 at first, but it couldn't run on the system ?

If the new IPs are just more shooters, then they really aren't doing anything different than Halo.

I am happy to hear about the split of Bungie and Microsoft. They have worked together long enough and it is time for Bungie to have its own territory back without the need of the "tyrant" Microsoft. This split will allow Bungie to work with competing companies of Microsoft and it will be able to produce new games.

Hopefully Bungie can accomplish something on their own. The Halo franchise has been good but really who was Bungie before Microsoft? Hopefully they can be someone new.

i love halo and play 3 online quite alot, but if they make another game related to the halo universe it needs to be something other than an FPS and different from 'halo wars' maybe an actionRPG or adventure game (maybe racing for a laugh... or not). or a squad based 3rd person game prequel to the halo games with origin storylines.

Bungie was meh before Microsoft bought them.

Sounds good, just not another halo. The story was good at the end of the first game, and now we have our mediocre trilogy. I want something fresh and tasty, with weapons that do weird stuff and some innovative gameplay :D

Mario is like a child-hood friend, thats why no one bashes him. I remember playing Mario on NES when I was 5. I cant hate the man that made me like games to begin with. On topic though its cool to see that Bungie isnt going to do just Halos for the rest of thier life.

Amen, OnlyTbone, you're right about no one ever bashing Mario. I would add to that list the dozens of different Final Fantasy games, which hardly anyone ever complains about. If you love a game universe, you want to keep playing in it, simple as that. If you don't like Halo, then stfu and don't play the games. I don't like Mario or FF, but I don't go into every Mario or FF thread and whine about how we don't need anymore of their games. And Larry7, you're the naive one: MS is still Bungie's publisher, and they would never let Bungie make multi-platform games, except for PC and maybe the DS (they let Rare make Viva Pinata for the DS because MS doesn't have a competing handheld).

I would like to see Sony take advantage of this split and pay Bungie to develop a game for the PS3. It doesn't have to be Halo. It should be a new IP. If Sony comes with enough money, I am sure they could pull it off. However, I am sure that MS would put up a fight with financial offerings for the developer to stay exclusive to MS products.

I am sick of halo 3, to tell you the truth you cant compare with Unreal tornament 3 on PS3 verison with halo 3 and gears of war because the developers have said that they were impress with the PS3. And they understand the power of the PS3!!!
