Brutal Legend cranks out heavy metal setlist

Judas Priest, Motorhead, Black Sabbath raise hell for soundtrack of Double Fine Productions action game; 75 bands signed on for 100 songs.

by

Last week, Double Fine Productions put its legal dispute with Activision behind it, agreeing to settle the dispute over Brutal Legend out of court. While the terms of the settlement weren't disclosed, today brings the first official confirmation that Brutal Legend is still set to make its October 13 North American debut.

Eddie Riggs gives a command performance.

Double Fine and Electronic Arts today announced the full soundtrack for its upcoming action game Brutal Legend. Given that the game follows heavy metal roadie Eddie Riggs (voiced by Jack Black) on a trip through the underworld, it's no surprise the audio accompaniment is uniformly hard rock. The sheer abundance of metal is more noteworthy, given that Brutal Legend will feature more than 100 licensed songs in total, pulled from the catalogs of 75 different bands.

In addition to obvious selections like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Black's own Tenacious D (all of which had their lead singers serve as voice actors during the game's development), the Brutal Legend setlist digs deeper into the genre. Double Fine also signed on once-forgotten Canadian rockers Anvil (subject of a recent critically acclaimed documentary), hair metal acts like Skid Row and FireHouse, and more current acts like DragonForce and Cradle of Filth.

While there are horrible, horrible things in that list, is good to see bands like Manowar, Cradle, Children of Bodom or Motorhead, still, sometimes i think, Motley Crue? seriously, where is Helloween, Nightwish and Iron Maiden? but no, they have Motley Crue, oh well, despite that and the annoying Jack Black voice, i'm sure this will be a very sweet game, another classic of good ol Shafer.

Killer setlist, shame no Wintersun or Ensiferum, which are my favourite bands, and I know Metallica are weird when it comes to liscensing, but nevertheless, a really good soundtrack

"i'll buy the beatles rock band instead of this garbage" They're both completely different games. I'm sure they'll both have their positives and negatives.

Pretty good list... needs some Metallica to make it a great list though. Most of these bands wouldn't be around if it weren't for what Metallica has accomplished for metal music. Of course, knowing Metallica... they probably chose not to add their music.

Great setlist! I'm really not big on Mastodon, and I am surprised Iron Maiden isn't on it, but otherwise very impressive! I'm glad to see 3 Inches of Blood getting some well-deserved recognition.

Awesome list! My only complaint is Marilyn Manson is on the list, but I don't hate that song, and it's 1 out of 100 winners, so I'll let it pass. No Metallica or Iron Maiden is a little surprising, but they are bringing out some underrated, but just as tallented bands. Can't wait for Rocktober \m/!!

I love metal, but for some reason this game hasn't really piqued my interest. After seeing this setlist, I'm definitely a lot more interested in it now. Bring it on.

This songlist is way way better than Guitar Hero 5 song list. Well done Double Fine.!!!!!!!!!

@ deleterguy: "My god stop talking about Metallica, these bands are 10 times better." *Sigh* Yes these bands are "10 times better" - hence why Metallica has been one of the most influential bands in metal for the past 30 years. GG.

Wow, this setlist is brutal. They pretty much bent over GH.

I am enthralled with this play list. Destroys any of those stereotypical Guitar Hero play lists. The fact that the only "In Flames" song they have is from the Jester Race, and it's "Goliaths Disarm their Davids" proves that the people behind this really understand the actual metal scene. I am just bummed their is no Arch Enemy or Opeth. Oh well....sequel! Adding King Diamond, 3 Inches of Blood, some Black Metal, RACER-X, and the little unknown NWBHM band Saxon is awesome. This game is going to really introduce many people who thought they knew metal, to what metal really is.

EMPEROR! THEY HAVE EMPEROR! And Enslaved too! Two songs from Enslaved! The first two off of their second album, no less; Loke is brutal... And then you've got other great bands from other arenas of metal like Iced Earth and *gasp* KMFDM. I'm not nearly as excited about the gameplay as I am about the track list.

@ necronaux Big deal, the man is the lead star of the video game. I'd think it should be expected to have some of there songs in the game, not to mention it's 2 songs out of a hundred.

Nice soundtrack. Where can I buy it? BUT... for Tenacious D to include themselves in the list? What a freakin' joke. Black must be stoned or stupid to include himself in this list.

Stone the crows, that's quite the list! No Maiden in there feels like a bit of an omission, but that might be due to licensing or something. Still, my anticipation for BL just went up another notch. :)

So this is why Activision wanted to kill the game, This setlist DESTROYS anything Guitar Hero ever did, just the number of songs is mind bogaling!
