Brenda Romero to teach at CA university

Cofounder and COO of Loot Drop the first game designer in residence at University of California, Santa Cruz Center for Games and Playable Media.

by

The University of California, Santa Cruz has appointed Brenda Romero (formerly Brenda Brathwaite) as a game designer in residence at the school's Center for Games and Playable Media. This is the first such position on any University of California campus.

Romero is cofounder (alongside husband John Romero) of Loot Drop Inc., where she also serves as Chief Operating Officer. She will continue working on games at Loot Drop while spending time at the university.

UC Santa Cruz's new Game Designer in Residence program sees a leading game designer come to campus to teach courses and serve students, researchers, and faculty in an advisory role. Romero will spend one year at the college and her appointment begins January 1, 2013.

Prior to cofounding Loot Drop, Romero spent time with a range of game companies, including Atari, Sir-tech Software, Electronic Arts, Firaxis, and other mobile studios.

And this article has to do with what?

Does she have John Romero's hokey enthusiasm for the devil? Because that's about as much as I associate with the Romero name at this point. That and Dai Kitana, which makes me sad.

So she's worked on the 'Playboy' game.. interesting lol..

i'd like to think i'm rather informed about the industry, but i do not know who Brenda Romero is. I do know the games her husband made though.

Might of helped the article for some of us if it stated some of the games she lead.

As for the story at hand, good for her i guess. Someone of her pedigree in the industry would make a good teacher (i'm assuming, since she got her own article even though i don't know what games she's made in the past).

Is that really the picture they want to use for an unheard-of person to be taken seriously? Pathetic.

Hmm, if my title was COO, I'd put an L on the end. So, it'd be COOL. Then I could be like, "Yeah, I'm the COOL of So-and-So Inc. I'm the only COOL dude there."  Of course, my favorite title is simply BOSS.

It's always nice to see industry focused curriculum for industry focused majors.

She worked at Sir-Tech? That gets a thumbs up from me!

A lot of people on here have no idea about people in the industry, people with actual talent, and people that pioneered the gaming medium while they where in grade school.

A lot of the rest are just rude and sexist.

Mrs. Romero has a stellar background across multiple successful gaming ip's and developers. She was lead design at Sir-Tech for the latter games in the Wizardry series for crying out loud. She is also the wife of John Romero. If you don't know who that is, then you don't need to be posting on a gaming website.

Grow up people.

Here's a little nifty thing that everyone who might be a fan of Romero should check out. Lots of old pictures of the id days, along with the wealth they plundered from Doom. http://romero.smugmug.com/

She has kind of bounced around for years, we'll see what happens. She should be able to impart a great deal of experience in that field.

Apparently she has promised to teach "a class that will be awesome that will make you great!" Please pay tuition two years in advance. No refunds, please.

Sooo... A game designer in a has-been company with no good games to it's resume?

Great choice.

You know one of the key designers of Morrowind used to do this teaching stuff? We need guys like him.

So she's the wife of one of modern gamings pioneers who has basically disappeared into obscurity in the last 10 years and I've never really heard of her before now either.  Interesting gig, although I'm not sure why a major university would consider such a position to be of real value.

@rann89 How is it pathetic? It's not like she's nude or in skimpy clothes. I like it, she's a game designer, she probably has a fun side and likes to show it off a little. Nothing "unprofessional" about that.

@GH05T-666 dude keep it in your pants, she's not hot at all, just Google her name and you'll get an old blonde hag.

@evilross Makes you wish for the days when gaming wasn't so popular. Really hate the community sometimes.

Was sad to see that the Shaker Kickstarter was canceled and probably wouldn't have met its goal.

@AuronAXE Thats really cool, a lot of that stuff I had never seen before.

Anyone out there that wants a good read about the industry and some of the greats in it should check out the "Masters of Doom" book.

"Masters of Doom" was required reading my first year in Simulation and Game Design, and its a great book. Well written, funny, and full of information and cool stories about the PC gaming explosion and the developers that were behind it.

look up the Wizardry series.  Shit is a masterclass in game design in of itself.

Brathwaite was the lead designer on Wizardry 8.  Arguably a much better RPG then Morrowind.

@hushed_kasket This is real news. In fact, this is probably some of the reali-ist news as it involves real people making an actual impact on the world.

@endorbr It's not of real value. It's a money-drainer from people who think playing video games makes them experts.

WantYouBad - Totally agree. What happened to the days when gamers just wanted to game and weren't made up of stuck up elite-ish snobs. Now folks act like you have to know the history of what went on behind the controllers just to be able to give an opinion on a game.

uncle5555
uncle5555

@Legolas_Katarn  @evilross It was a stupid name and a stupid game, plus they asked for $1 million, and Romero thought if he played in the background no one would notice him (even though he's dead center in their video) and also believe he had enough capital from fans for them to back the project.  I pointed out every reason it failed on another forum, and their attitudes towards fans was not an insignificant part of that. It was a major part of the failure.

They came ill prepared to the presentation thinking that people would throw money their way with a flimsy campaign, they were lucky to break $300k or whatever it was.

Lastly one work for Romero - Daikatana.

(which will haunt him till he's dead and buried.)

hushed_kasket

@Giancarlo @hushed_kasket Look at the comments of this story... On average, does it look like people care about the content?  Or just whether her picture is "hot" or not?

Right.  Because nobody cares.  Well, somebody does... Mrs. Romero's family and friends.  But an online gaming reader?  Nah.  Impact?  Give me a break.  Exactly 7 people (out of nearly 7 billion) will be impacted personally.

My degree in journalism helps me sniff out interesting news... and as my original comment noted, this is not it.

And did you mean "realest?"  Or is reali-ism some kind of cultural movement I'm not familiar with?

uncle5555

 @Aphyosemion  @Suikogaiden where you getting that from, put her name in any search engine look at images and walaa...she's in the pictures with John Romero for Fk's sake.  If you can't tell that's the same person (the forehead should be a dead giveaway) the you DO NEED glasses. O_o;
