Brat Designs shines light on SOLAR

The developer behind BREED announces a dark sci-fi spin on Battlefield 1942.

Just over a month before the release of BREED, UK-based Brat Designs has revealed it is working on another sci-fi PC war action game, named SOLAR.

In what appears to be a cross between Battlefield 1942 and Blade Runner, the first-person PC shooter drops players into a future that's been ravaged by a war between the Eastern Collective Democracy (ECD) and the United Western Alliance (UWA). Each side will have its own technology, including weapons and ground, air, and amphibious vehicles that are capable of carrying multiple crew members. Players will also be able to call in artillery and air strikes, which can feature chemical, biological, and radioactive weapons of mass destruction.

Adding to the chaos will be a third side--the Necros--who are an army of heavily armed corpses that have been reanimated by the toxic waste that soaks the ruins of tomorrow.

SOLAR will also feature three campaigns--Moon, Mars, and Earth. All three celestial bodies have been ruined by decades of pollution and conflict. According to Brat, these regions will have fully interactive environments that feature buildings and other incidental scenery that can be destroyed by gunfire and explosives. Each map will also sport changing weather patterns, including fog, snow, and acid rain.

SOLAR will allow up to 32 human or AI-controlled players to battle it out in a variety of modes. Cooperative multiplayer modes will include interdiction, retrieval, assault, VIP escort, search and destroy, recon, rescue, and sabotage. Last-man-standing, deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture-the-flag, assault, and king-of-the-hill will be among the game's standard multiplayer modes.

Brat's announcement did not give a release date for the game, which has yet to find a publisher. GameSpot will have more details on SOLAR as they become available.
