Borderlands patched on 360, PS3

Console versions of 2K Games and Borderlands' action RPG get updates to address bugs; some issues with PS3 edition remain unresolved.

After years of anticipation marred by delays, the "role-playing shooter" Borderlands shipped out for consoles on October 20, with the PC version arriving this past Tuesday. But while both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions received high marks from critics, players of both reported numerous bugs. While most were minor, the PS3 version of the game had persistent friends-list issues, which were part of the reason it was rated slightly lower than the 360 edition by GameSpot.

As it was dealing with reported Borderlands inventory shortages at retailers, Gearbox was also readying the first comprehensive patches for the game. Today, major updates for both the PS3 and 360 versions arrived and will be automatically installed the next time anyone with an unpatched version of the game plays it on Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network.

Gearbox is hoping its bug fixes will ease players' frustrations.

GameSpot editors downloaded the PS3 patch to see if it resolved the friends-list issues. While the 53MB patch now lets players join others' ongoing games without any issues (before, it often locked up), some issues remain with seeing whether friends not playing Borderlands are currently online.

A full list of the issues addressed by the patches can be seen below. Gearbox is also compiling all known Borderlands problems on its forums, along with updates on the status of their respective fixes. They range from the minor (digital audio skips or stutters) to the character-crippling (weapon proficiencies disappear upon leaving a co-op game).

PS3 PATCH NOTES:

Hey, what about all the PC owners who keep getting "General Protection Fault" errors like me? I have seen dozens of pages reporting that problem and as far as I know, there is no patch in the works to address it. Maybe I should just return the game and call it defective.

Fixed a bug that caused the digger elevator to be unusable after completing the Find Tannis mission. I bought this game yesterday, when I put it in it updated but I still ran into this bug. Hopefully it will work later...

@metroidprimer I had that same glitch. I looked at my challenge record though, and for the "How Much for the Planet?" challenge it said I only had like $500,000, yet in my pocket I had $1.3 million. After earning another $500k I did end up getting the achievement, but I was pretty bummed to see that happen. Now on the same character though I have more money than the ticker can handle. If I'm to guess I'd say I have...... $1,012,000,000?

"Glad they are looking into bugs. I've had a great experience, but was playing with a friend who stepped on "the boat" the same time as I, yet only I got the achievement. He rightfully wtf'd, but thankfully we live in an age where console games can be patched too." @Oloryn Yeah we've been able to patch console games almost as long as... Achievements have been around?

I noticed that when i was playing, bosses would re-spawn at times but i still enjoyed fighting them and getting loot. Lag was a slight issue especially in some areas crawling with enemies.

Nephariouson, that respawned Mothra-type monster is actually intentional; most (or is it all?) of the bosses respawn after some time, just so you can go back and kill them again if you feel like it.

The biggest and most annoying bug I've seen on the PC at least is where your clip on your gun would randomly change to not being full whenever you enter into a menu or shop screen and come out, or when you enter and come out of a vehicle. I thought maybe it was a quirk with the perks of the extra ammo clip, but the amount was random from time to time when I had it. Also, there aren't missing parts on the weapon scavenger quests, some are just very hard to find and the quest compass would make it pointless, so of course it doesn't work.

@J0J023, Im also trying to complete the 'Revolver' quest, and am also 1 part missing. Note that 1 part is in the 'Skagzilla' layer, and before you enter the arena ensure your ammo is full on all weapon types.....trust me!

Done the 'Moth to a flame' quest and the damn thing has respawned! AAAARRGGGHHHH! Still love the game though.

I have been playing ton of borderlands lately, and experienced a few bugs that were mentioned in this list. The worst was a bug that caused me to loose my lvl 35 sirens weapon profs and talent points. It was pretty lame but I enjoy the game so much I ended up getting a second siren to lvl 50 glitch free this time lol. Now that theyre taking care of the glitches i would recommend this game to shoot n loot fans.

This is a bit off-topic but when do they release "the zombie island of dr.ned"? Read somewhere that it would be available 30th oct.

What's funny is that I had the game sitting unopened for about a week, thinking it would just be an "okay" game. Now that I've been playing...I'm completely addicted to it. One of the best games I've played this year!

Wow, Lilith's Phase Strike didn't work properly before? I'm glad I left her class until last, then. :P

Hmm.... I just think this title smells of the "success" of XIII those few years ago.... similar art style game too, funnily enough. I reckon we'll see a shedload of copies of this in bargain bins in January, no matter how good it seems to be. I'll buy mine then I think....

No PC patch? More and more PC titles are relegated to the role of simple ports of Xbox games (yes, Xbox - notice NO game requires what the PC or the PS3 can do better because everything must play perfectly on the xbox). Now even technical support comes later for the PC. And the companies blame piracy. I blame the companies for piracy, noone likes to feel like a 4th category consumer after paying for their products.

good job gearbox, now if 2k could look at how thorough they fix the bugs in the game right away everything would be much better... *cough*nba 2k10 *cough*

People had said Lilith's Phase Strike was broken, good thing they fixed it. It says at the forum that Lilith's 'Silent Resolve' ability isn't working properly. Hope it get's fixed.

this is good, i got my update last night/this morning at about five. This is how a company should do it all the time, not wait like two months or more to do one update.

I'd really considered getting this for PC, however once I learned of the whole Gamespy thing, that really turned me off from that version.

ChoiMein

and what about the pc version?? I should not have to forward a metric butt-load of ports and do all this stuff (like creating a static IP behind a router) in order to allow friends to join my private game... not to mention why the hell do we have to dig up our 10 year old gamespy arcade account info?? who does that?? GBX really dropped the ball on this one... I AM having fun with borderlands however (whether i can play with or without my friends...)

how bout fixin the bug that keeps me from getting the pandora-dog millionaire achievement. I currently have 1.6 million bucks in the game. not that gamerscore matters or anything, its just that i've earned 50 g which i have not recieved. I also got the spinning dollar counter the other day and yeah it was pretty funny

@GodsPoison Probably not. Most review sites and magazines review the retail copy and post release patches aren't factored into scores.

Talk about bad timing. I got booted off Live as I was playing last night because the game needed to update. I kept playing offline and reached level 50 with Lilith, then installed the patch. Now that I am done with the character, I now learn that her phase strike has been fixed. Oh well, the game is still amazing and I still have three other characters to level up. :)

I LOVE this game- good to see Gearbox making the required adjustments to improve the game experience. I want to see another Borderlands sequel in the future. Keep this series going.
