Last year, 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive announced that Borderlands 2 had shipped 7.5 million copies and was on pace to become 2K's best-selling game ever. Now, that milestone has finally been reached.

The 2012 shoot-and-loot action game is now the highest-selling game in the history of 2K Games, the company announced today, though it's not clear what title Gearbox Software's game took down to claim the throne. 2K Games president Christoph Hartmann announced the news today in a news release for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. He described the Borderlands series as one of 2K's "premiere" franchises.

2K Games did not reveal a specific sales figure for Borderlands 2. However, Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford said recently that sales of the game are greater than the number of Xbox Ones (3 million) and PlayStation 4s (6 million) sold to date, which would put the game's sales at around 9 million or more.

Other breadwinner 2K Games properties include BioShock, Mafia, NBA 2K, and Civilization. The Grand Theft Auto series, meanwhile, is published by Rockstar Games, not 2K Games. Grand Theft Auto V alone has shipped 32.5 million copies to date.
