Borderlands 2 DLC out October 16

New Mechromancer character class for Gearbox's new shooter arriving a month after launch for $10; free for those who preorder.

Borderlands 2 does not hit store shelves until next week, but developer Gearbox Software has already confirmed a launch date for the game's Mechromancer downloadable content. The developer said the character class will arrive on October 16 for $10, or as a free download for those who preorder the game.

In addition to the Mechromancer DLC, Gearbox will offer four campaign expansion packs for Borderlands 2. At launch, Gearbox will offer a DLC season pass for the game, which bundles four $10 expansions for $30.

Borderlands 2--due out September 18--is the sequel to 2009's well-received loot-based co-op shooter. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

i love the way you people go mental at the mere mention of a dlc despite the fact that gearbox is one of the few developers to actual put out quality dlc's. these aren't capcom-style dlc's, quit shitting yourselves.

Well that was amazingly fast.

Glad I didn't buy it.

Now I'm glad I didn't buy this game.

Just to keep up to date I'd have to fork out at least another $30.

You know $90 goes a long way nowadays.

Greedy greedy greedy....

Cool, can I use her for co-op? or is she only for offline like the Dead Island dlc?

The issue many are asking and/or complaining about is addressed in the second paragraph:

"In addition to the Mechromancer DLC, Gearbox will offer four campaign expansion packs for Borderlands 2. At launch, Gearbox will offer a DLC season pass for the game, which bundles four $10 expansions for $30."

Note the "In addition to the Mechromancer" part.

The Mechromancer is an additional player character free for those who pre-order.  The season pass is four "campaign expansion packs" (new playable areas like General Knoxx or Dr. Ned) for the price of three. Two separate offers for separate content.

The short answer is that no, the Mechromancer is not one of the four DLCs included in the season pass, all of which will be new playable campaigns.  Pre-ordering gets you an extra character for free.  The season pass gets you one playable campaign expansion for free.

Personally, I'm torn on the season pass.  I liked or loved three of the four main expansions to the orignal, but hated the fourth (Moxxi's Underdome).   Four for the price of three is a good deal, especially given that three of the Borderlands campaign expansion packs had a good 10 hours of quality play time.  The Underdome left me cold, however.

Still, even if one is a dud, you do break even.  That said, I'd really rather have a few well-written reviews to look at before buying an expansion.

So, I am confused. Is the Mechromancer part of the DLC Season Pass? Or is she a separate, fifth DLC pack?

i sure hope the article is wrong and the mechromancer is not one of the dlc packs included in the season pass because that would effectively eliminate any discount incentive for the large amount of preorder customers which i would assume would be the primary demo for the season pass to begin with.

lol its funny to see so many people rant about something that they don't even understand. First off their game is set for a specific date and they had to finish the game by then. So even though they made this new character  before the release date doesn't mean that they can just shove it in the game and have it ready for the release date, they would have to delay the game and that would piss more people off then having the extra character a dlc. Secondly the point of having this dlc free is  for people who pre order is to reward fans who have faith in  game companies. I am tired of all the people complaining that the dlc should be free for everyone. Sorry but game developers dont have to cater for everyone needs.

I see it as a thankyou to all those who made the game a sucess in the first place... most of the pre-orders will be from people who loved the first game. If you think its milking then don't buy it... its called choice.

There's good DLC and there's bad DLC. I count this as good DLC, though the price tag is too high in my book ($5 for a character would have made more sense). The pre-order thing makes sense considering it's not a day 1 deal (it's still under construction and not on the disk).

I will gladly support this , spent hours and hours on the first game looking forward to spending hours and hours with this one.

It's not about the money, its the principal. Bring the DLC out later after the game has died down some. If your going to crank it out and have it sitting already to go at the time of the launch, it just rubs me wrong. I think it would sit better with me if they would just shut up and in a couple of months announce they  have some DLC.

Feel like I am paying for a nice meal I have ate before only to find out that they had cut the portions back, and want to charge me extra for the balance of the meal.

I'll still get the game at some point, but it is now moved to the bottom of my hit list.

10 dollars for a new charaacter that was probably ripped from the game in the first place? i dont understand how anyone can defend this. if it would be 2.99 then ok. but 10 bucks is just a blatant money grab. Not any better than waht EA or activision are doing

Darkmoone1
Darkmoone1

 @Poodlejumper

Uh why wouldn't you? First off  its not on disc DLC, second the new class came free if you preordered so......why not?

Also if anyone remembers it was the DLC that made BL1 so addicting, and I believe it was Knoxx.

Darkmoone1
Darkmoone1

 @erik1116 You would prbobly spend the same amount on FPS multiplayer maps wouldn't you instead of actual hard worked DLC that wasn't on the disk and can give you HOURS of more gameplay.

@erik1116 that's sad. When this game will last you longer than 5 60$ games. You are looking at it totally wrong! Hmm 200 hours of the best coop actions out there for 90 dollars or 6o$ for some 12 hour game.

@blastmaster2k2 Guess you don't have any friends. Your right I suppose gear box should put on the back of the box that "friends are required" to actually truly enjoy what this game has to offer.

 @dlhoff no Only the campaign DLC are part of the DLC Season Pass. She is just a side DLC. Free is you pre ordered the Game.

Tekcor

 @Triton Um... but it wasn't ready to go in time for launch. Borderlands went Gold Master about a month ago, this character only finished days ago. Due to console certification time, there's no way they could add it to the release next week.

The only other option would be to delay release of the game until October 16th. Don't see that option being too popular.

RiKanKiDD
RiKanKiDD

 @edinko It was not ripped from the game. The character was still in the making when the game was released. If you wanted the character you should have pre ordered it. A simple 5 dollars Is all it takes to pre order a game and get all the bonuses including this DLC. There is no reason to complain! What have gamers come to...

Landsharkk
Landsharkk

 @edinko To be fair, we don't know what all is included in the DLC.  There could be more than just a new character.

Hairygrim
Hairygrim

 @edinko The character is not ripped from the game or on the disk already. The game had went gold a while back so the team started working on dlc. If you watch the Now Playing of it Randy Pitchford shows the character for the first time & it's obvious that she's nowhere near completion. The early predictions were that she'd be finished 60-90 days after launch (I think, might've been from after they started work on her) but they were progressing quickly with her so Randy said she may be released earlier - now they've decided that she'll be finished within a month after launch.

Also making DLC in the first place was Gearbox's choice - they want to go ahead & continue making content for the game because they love doing it. They weren't being pressured by their publishers (EA & Activision being your examples) to crank out DLC after DLC.

As for the price - each character plays very differently from the others so adding a new one is a big expansion. Certainly far more worth your money than a map/skin pack.

TTDog
TTDog

@edinko: It can be defended easily... it's free if you pre-order the game, a sort of thankyou. At the end of the day with all DLC... if you don't want or agree with it... don't buy it.

Triton
Triton

 @edinko Agree, If this was EA this would be ripped to shreds by all.

erik1116

 @Darkmoone1 Absolutely not. FPS multiplayer maps are jokes. Also @God_Emperor. I Had the first Borderlands. It was fun, I'm just into spending around $90....

edinko

 @Hairygrim

1. Well if its a big expansion like you said its impossible that they would make it in the short time so its cleraly cut or witheld content from the game just not realeased on day1 cause it would be too obvious even for blinded fanboys.

2. If its not a big expansion and they made it really in the short time then its somethinf superficial and not worth a 10 dollar price.

YOu can choose whoch version you like more but both are rip offs

edinko
edinko

 @TTDog

 wrong pal. Its not a thank you. Its forcing people into a preorder of a product they know nothing about. You should try to be less gullibe and less of an apologist fanboy. THats what they are exploiting with this unethical business method

edinko
edinko

 @Triton

 exactly. DOnt misuderstand me. I really love the first game. And the DLC very mostly very good. BUt its different to pay 10 bucks for a new 10 hour campaign like it was the case in part 1 and to pay 10 bucks for a character class which is basically nothing in a game where you dont even see the character.  few numbers changed for the passive skills and 1 active skill graphics and model. thats it. there is no more probably. 10 bucks for this is exploitation. ANd dont start with the "its free for preorders" apolologism. ITs even worse. CAuse they are forcing people in a preorder of a product they dont know if it will be good.

Hairygrim
Hairygrim

 @edinko Okay, I was hoping this would be a reasonable discussion. I was also hoping that you'd actually bother to read what I posted. I'll try to spell things out for you:

-It's a big expansion because it's a new character. The character plays very differently from the others.

-It's not been that short a time because the game was finished a month early & they started working on this very soon after.

-It's not impossible to make in this space of time because it's 'only' a character ("oh you said yourself it's only a character not a big expansion not worth money ragragrag" - don't do this please because it'd be stupid). They do not need to write a plot, create new maps, create new enemies, etc.

As I said, if you look at the Now Playing from a couple of weeks back you can clearly see that the character is nowhere near being finished.

TTDog
TTDog

@edinko: Then you're a bigger fool than I took you for... Exploitation indeed... 1stly its only milking if you buy it and you're not being forced (in any way) to download it. 2ndly there were videos posted only last week that still showed the Mechromancer in a half completed form. If you think this is all an elaborate game to try and get a few more coins out of the gamers then you can probably see a conspiracy in a bag of sweets. The only "unbeliavble" thing here is that you're allowed on a computer without a supervising adult...

edinko
edinko

 @TTDog

 ANd thats why we will be milked more. People are willing to believe anything casuse of gullible nad ignorant fanboyism. Well what you see as a thank you i see as exploitation. THey force you on a subconcious level of course. THey are selling you a full price game with a feeling that you are missing out something.

Like I said i really liked BL1 but this is wrong. I dont believe also that this was developed after it went gold. It sound like a big fat lie so they dont get the negativity comming with day1 dlc. FOr me its just witheld content for extra nickel and diming. Its very very unbelievable what they are saying that they are making it right now

TTDog
TTDog

 @edinko Forcing you how? Have they marched you to your console and forced you to buy it? Don't be so feeble... man up for goodness sake.

Chances are most pre-orders will have been from fans fo the first game (you did spot it's a sequel) and this is a nice touch and a thankyou to all those people who made the first game the sucess it wasn't.

If you can't see that then you have my pity.

Leeric420
Leeric420

 @edinko  @Triton If you dont know if its going to be good? Okay...its simple pre order it if you want it for free, you people need to quit complaining just for the sake of complaining
