Borderlands 2 coming to PlayStation Vita in 2014

Iron Galaxy Studios bringing first-person shooter to Sony's handheld next year.

Gearbox Software's well-received 2012 first-person shooter Borderlands 2 will arrive on the PlayStation Vita in 2014, Sony, Gearbox, and 2K announced today at Gamescom.

According to Gearbox Software product manager Adam Fletcher, in the past year the studio has been "inundated" with emails, tweets, and forum posts asking for a PS Vita version of the game.

"You spoke, we listened," Fletcher said.

Borderlands 2 for PS Vita is a collaborative effort between 2K, Sony, and Iron Galaxy Studios, the independent developer being fighting game Divekick.

The PS Vita version of Borderlands 2 will feature "all the unique benefits" of the portable, Fletcher said. It is not clear if any of the Borderlands 2 downloadable content will be available for the PS Vita version.

Speaking at indie game event Rezzed in July 2012, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford said he wanted to see Borderlands 2 on the PS Vita.

"One of the things I wish Sony would do is get behind Borderlands, because I'd love to see a Vita version of the game," he said at the time. "I want to be able to have the character I'm working on with my PS3, and then when I'm on the road with my Vita I can just keep developing that same character because it exists on the cloud somewhere."

Sony announced a price cut for the PS Vita today. Both the 3G and Wi-Fi models are now available for $200.

I never really got into either  game on console but I can almost guarantee that I will buy this for my Vita. It's nice to see that consumers are be listened to. Killzone Mercenary and Borderlands 2 will sell Vitas. Couldn't be happier :)

I've never been able to get into the console version of B2 but a Vita version actually makes me want to buy a Vita. I've been waiting for a compelling reason, this could be it. Not gonna Vita bash and 3ds bluster tho I love my 3ds I'd really love to own both.

Just bought my vita today, Sony won me over in the end. Plenty more big games like Borderlands to coming to Vita will definitely get more people interested quickly.

Better LATE then never i suppose.

Sad part is VITA could of easily handled the online 4 player mode just fine too. Borderlands 2 isn't so graphic intensive honestly.

This is seriously surprising news! However, I can't help but think an exclusive Borderlands entry on Vita would've been a better system seller since so many people have already played the second one and sure some people will rebuy it, but I can almost see the reviews now comparing it to the console versions and how it falls short.

HOLY SHIT

it finally gets a decent game?

hmm still i wouldn't pay more then a 100$ on a vita (and i have to pay another 100 for a memory card)

Lol, I'm not sure if I have the vision to play a game like this on a handheld. Pity, it would be nice to have a time sink like Borderlands for my train commute.

I cant wait to play this on my Vita :D

Talk about a bitter-sweet announcement.

Personally, I find borderlands to be nothing spectacular. It's ok... but god it gets annoying (and so do the diehard fans)

However, I am always happy to hear about a game as popular as this getting Vita support. The system just needs to be more in the public eye because it is miles above and beyond the 3DS's crap.

Is the 3DS capable of such a title?

Having Borderlands 2 on the Vita is good and all but would they really make much of a profit from a game that already came out last year? We want more of the Bioshock game for Vita or any other new exclusive game that has potential on the platform.

Port-a-mania is running wild on the Vita, brother...

Great another old port game. I can't really knock it but once again why do I wanna play this on my Vita when I can buy it on the big screen? It looks good to add to a library but if I already owned and beat Borderlands 2, why am I gonna buy it for the Vita? The Vita needs handheld games, not ports of console games. This is why I enjoy the psp and 3ds more than the Vita.

Nice. By the time it actually comes out I'll be about ready to replay Borderlands 2 anyway.

So what's in it for the people who own a vita and finished Borderlands 2?

This is a pretty good move. It's a pretty good option for a handheld game, even if its a port. Add the Rogue Legacy announcement and the Vita becoming a more enticing proposition.

Still I don't know why it took them so long to get these games on the system. Sony should have coughed up some dollars to get games like this on the system some time ago.

Here's hoping for the Vita to rise like the phoenix and finally fulfill its potential.
It probably won't outsell the 3DS but hopefully it will sell enough to encourage developers to utilize this awesome piece of hardware. I think a Vita Bioshock is becoming more and more likely now. It looks like Mr. Levine is still keeping the faith.
Crucial shopping season coming for the Vita.

Awesome game, I will definitely get this for Vita. My question is, how well will it run? I know the Vita is powerful, but will this test its limits!?

@gosushi If a developer really cares about porting a title, they'll make it work.

odimusprime

@DaneGamer There's not really a lot of dev work involved, unless they decide to rebuild the game for the Vita. It's just a port of the console version, with some changes made to compensate for the lack of four shoulder buttons and some possible touch-screen control.

MegamanX97

If Obilivion came on Ps Vita I would buy that!! Would be awesome.

@digitaltiger It is more games, except they aren't strong exclusives the Vita needs to stay in the game. Killzone Mercenary and Bioshock Vita (Whenever they begin production!) are looking to make that step.

gamerboy100

@DaneGamer So it's underpowered compared to next-gen, yet they still make Xbox 360 and PS3 games.

@grbolivar a overpriced Wii-emulator. After 2 years it'll transform into a console of it's own, when Zelda or Mario get released.

gamerboy100
gamerboy100

@grbolivar Yeah, but consoles don't sell unless games are made for them. That's the problem with the Wii U.

grbolivar
grbolivar

@gamerboy100 @DaneGamer 360 & ps3 have 80MM users each, those are some sales devs dont want to miss while the new gen takes over, we will be seeing games in 360 & ps3 for at least one year more.
