Borderlands 16-bit de-make released

Gearbox releases browser-based, overhead arcade-style shooter "The Border Lands" for PC.

by

Gearbox Software's Borderlands series did not exist in the 16-bit era of games, but thanks to a new browser-based de-make of the franchise, gamers can see what such a game could have been like.

Shoot and loot like it's 1989 in The Border Lands.

The developer has released "The Border Lands" for PC, an overhead arcade-style shooter that has players enlisting as one of four characters and surviving waves of oncoming enemies. As in the contemporary version, gamers can level their characters and collect loot.

Development recently wrapped on Borderlands 2, with Gearbox now working on postlaunch support for the game, including the mechromancer class. The game is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on September 18. A recent game guide writer's playthrough of the title took 58 hours, with Gearbox calling the game a "hobby." Perfect..... This reminds me of my Childhood(well actually I'm still playing some even now on my console and I love it). Put this on a rom, I'll play it on my 16 bit console.

Like it. Maybe it should have been called Super Borderlands or Borderlands 2000 though?

Will we ever see a de-make of Mass Effect 3, DLCs included..?

16 bits are all rage these days, huh?

Fantastic way to fuel the hype train! I'd love to see more developers do this, but fear that it'd lose its uniqueness. A bit like when Bulletstorm made Duty Calls, it was fantastic.

What were Gearbox meant to be working on when they made this? :P

Still, I always love to imagine what current games would look like if they were made as 8/16bit titles :)

In what world is that 16bit? barely passes as an 8bit game. It still fun, tho'. Back to it now.

I had more fun playing this browser game for thirty minutes than I did playing Spec Ops: The Line for three hours.

The 16-bit de-make reminds me on how gaming has quickly evolved in the last twenty years.

This should be on PSN and XBL for $5. What would CoD look like as a 16bit game? lol!!

..See what you modders missed, a chance to clone the big bad game in 16 bits of wonder (and to make it better by removing or replacing the annoying quirks).

Does it have co-op?

Yeah, so THAT is a ton of fun.  Played up to level 20 and made myself stop.  Fun little time-sink... Love that they included a lot of the "weapon effects" in the loot chests.  :)

Nerds will complain about anything: "Um well, you see now, this is more like an 8-bit game as opposed to a, um, game from the 16-bit era." Just enjoy the game and quit whining. And now I'll probably get lots of comments about how I'm complaining about the complainers. On a more positive note, I can't wait for Borderlands 2! My social life is going down the toilet on September 18th.

I ran into glitch on first level. One of the enemies got glitched to off screen and just couldn't shoot him, so level1 never ended.

Just played it. Pretty fun. But it looks more 8bit than 16bit. My only gripe is that I wish they'd use WASD for movement.

Just 26 more days until we can play Borderlands 2! The wait is torture!

been playing this today - good fun. Borderlands weapons and enemies with a Smash-TV style of gameplay.... all in glorious 16-bit blockiness. Great fun. And free to boot, can't say fairer than that

I thought that I was playing a ps3 powwa uv da cell exclusive there for a minute. But then I realized that the over priced internet ready blu ray player couldn't pull off this kind of detail without a 10gig M A N D A T O R Y install.

With the lack of any kind of co-op, Realm of The Mad God will hold my pixel-based-PC attention !

the nostalgia implied by those graphics practically has me sitting here imaging the screech of tape-drive loading screens, and the rubber keys on my ZX Spectrum. awesome

@buying1999 Wow, it's been a while since I've seen you trolling. The other guy who thinks Ipads are better than 360s still wins though. Sorry.

@buying1999 wow you have a mean hate for the ps3 even though all 3 systems have there issues. but on a side note not all ps3 games have a mandatory install.
