Blue Shell's Tyranny Ends in Mario Kart 8

Fear not the blue shell.

by

Mario Kart 8’s May 30 release date is just a few weeks away, and as we near the finish line for this upcoming racer, Nintendo has been kind enough to drop a few new details about what’s coming to this long-running series. What excites me the most is the Super Horn, a new item that can destroy incoming items--including the dreaded blue shells--by emitting a powerful shock wave around your vehicle. This is a rare, single-use item and is one of two new items announced for the game. The other is an upgraded version of Lucky 7, aptly named Crazy 8, which adds a coin to the item rotation. Nintendo also announced two new characters for Mario Kart 8: Baby Rosalina--you knew that was coming--and Pink Gold Peach, the Princess Peach equivalent to Metal Mario.

When you're not on the racetrack, you can use the game's tournament mode to create public or private online matches that can be set to automatically re-create themselves on a regular basis--such as every Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. You can also share replays with your friends. The game will automatically save your last 12 races; you can post them in full to the Miiverse or generate a highlights reel that can be posted to either the Miiverse or directly to YouTube.

Wario knows how to put the Super Horn to good use.

Last but not least, Nintendo also announced that if you register Mario Kart 8 with Club Nintendo before July 31, you will be able to choose a free download code for either Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, Wii Party U, or The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD to add to your collection. If you want an early peek at Mario Kart 8--including some of the new courses--be sure to check out the videos below.

good luck finding and keeping the super horn in time for when a blue shell arrives...rare to say the least.

I'm calling it NOW: The Super Horn is, OFFICIALLY, the BEST ITEM EVER!!! It can destroy Spiny Shells! Although, most of us, including me, are hypocrites for liking the Spiny Shell when USING it, but hating the Spiny Shell when BEING A VICTIM of it's tyranny! But when playing Mario Kart Wii online with a bunch of Spiny-Shell-POW-Lightning-spamming hackers... ANARCHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANARCHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRCHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most people don't know that the Blue Shell could actually be dodged in Double Dash...so it's not really tyranny. lol

I've pre-ordered this bundle from Best Buy and can't wait, but it's shocking to see the realistic lighting and high definition textures in the context of this game.  Very strange mix of realism and cartoonish settings, but Nintendo usually delivers on the gameplay so no worries!

It seems like Nintendo is the only one of the big three that really care about party games.

Another Baby Character and another Metal (Gold ... whatever) Character instead of something more diverse like Boo, Diddy Kong or someone unexpected like Wart ... that stings man.

Let them please be secret characters or we'll have to pay out of our nose for DLC...

On top of the free Wii U game I effectively get Super mario kart 1 on vc for free as there was the deal where if you buy that within a certain time frame the price of downloading mario kart 8 is reduced buy the cost of price of the vc game.

Downloading to take advantage of the Deluxe program, and I get a fee game? Do I keep the free game, or give the code to the kid as a late/extra B-day present.....

Nice!  This is the sweet spot!  Remotely locate, start, charge your kart!

I can't say I'm pleased to see the motorcycles are returning, but overall Mario Kart 8 is looking pretty good.

How many people play Mario Kart alone?

I'd say that's the main reason I lost interest, but maybe it's not.  I played it with friends way back on SNES but then in the Wii years when people were playing it I never wanted to join them, though I was forced a couple times :).

I'm really happy for that new item it's the thing I'm MOST excited about. I like especially that it's still a random item so it doesn't completely count out the blue shell...but the menace isn't as big either. I'm really stoked for this new Mario Kart game...and that's saying something (the last Mario Kart I really enjoyed was Double Dash).

Best MarioKart news ever. You can now destroy the blue shell. Thank the F*** for that. If I had a penny for every time I have lost a race to the dreaded blue shell, I would have been able to buy Oculus Rift before Facebook. :)

I cant speak for anyone else but I've played the game and it was awesome. Personally, I can't wait for it to come out.

@redskinsdrool you could dodge it but it was very hard to do so,, you had to boost at the precise moment, i think i only ever managed to do it once or twice

@H0M3RC1D4L  Mario Kart 8 does look realistic, but in a more colorful and lively way, with the dynamic lighting and ads of characters and items and ads of MKTV everywhere, even in Retro tracks. The vehicle and character designs and animations are detailed, too. Honestly, in my opinion, video games of this generation should be colorful and lively, not those dark, brownish shooters. Mario Kart 8's mix of realism and cartoonyness is awesome! I think that after this game, upcoming Super Mario games may look JUST as realistic, although 3D World is very colorful.

@jark888  True to a degree, although the definition of "party games" has changed some in the industry. Now, playing online is just a version of a "party game", and in a lot of shooters (e.g. MW3), you can play split screen. They're just for a much different audience, and aren't what we would consider the "classic" party game we're accustomed to.

Also...it's hard to really view Nintendo as part of the big three anymore. I have a Wii, but I have not been interested in getting a Wii U at all (I've barely heard anything about it), until they come out with Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. for this generation. They've done very little with their hardware for years, so unless they come out with stellar party games and/or Mario-type adventures, they can't compete very well with the other systems (IMO).

@hystavito Play online then, I've spent far too much too much time playing online by myself.

@hystavito  Played the SNES game with my brother and some friends, N64 version was constantly on deck in college after the union closed, pretty much have payed the rest by myself or with the wife. Online is going to be fun.

@gannon27  Gawd all the dominating, lap time record breaking races I would have with my friends on Double Dash and Kart Wii RUINED because of a final lap blue shell hit me 20 meters or less from the finish line.

Finally something that protects me from being screwed me off into space on perfect Rainbow Road runs.

@Metallicwolf29  32GB is plenty of space. Besides...getting an external isn't that hard. I got a good 1TB for 30bucks and it works like a charm. I own all but 2 of my 10 Wii U games digitally as a result (not to mention all the VC games too).

Bowser05

@dadlm  Out of curiosity have you tried NSBU yet? I hate the New Super Mario Bros. series...but I really enjoyed the Wii U version.

Still, I highly recommend you check out Super Mario 3D World, NintendoLand, Sonic Lost World, Edge, Mighty Switch Force, Nano Assault Neo, NES Remix 1 AND 2, Rayman Legends and Wii Sports Club (just going through my library and adding to what's not already on your list).

I never got a chance to pick up Wonderful 101...how is it?

@seven7swords @gannon27 Hahaha, tell me about it. The worst thing was hearing it launch and know that it's coming for you and there is nothing you can do. :)

@Bowser05

Where'd you get a $30 one? The cheapest I can find is $60, just ordered an $80 2TB for my computer (I feel like it's going to melt down soon so I want to make sure everything's backed up, lol).

@Bowser05 @dadlm  yes I tried it but didnt really like it, i'm not a huge fan of mario to be honest and thx for the recommendation.

Wonderful 101 is good, pretty good story, it's orginal, good concept, the game isnt easy which I like but lack of explanation, poor control sometimes like when i'm trying to draw a weapon I want to use it's really hard to get it...

I'm not really good to give the good and bad point about some games lol but it's really fun to play

@Metallicwolf29  Bayonetta is the best action game ever made gameplay wise. Not even up for debate on a pure technical level. Everything else about it though will vary from each individual.

abHS4L88

@Bowser05

The 2TB is for my computer though, unless there's a way I can split the memory between my PC and my Wii U, I need a smaller (500GB would suffice) for my Wii U.

Bowser05
Bowser05

@abHS4L88 @Bowser05  It was on Newegg back at launch (near holiday time). The chepest decent 500gb I was able to find right now was 40. That being said...you should be happy with 2TB :).

Bowser05
Bowser05

@jedinortd_basic @Bowser05 @Metallicwolf29  Anything will work. Keep in mind if it doesn't have a dedicated power source you need to purchase a USB Y-cable and use two ports on the back for it. I got a high-rated Touro drive...I don't know the model...and my mistake it's a 500GB I have...which is still plenty. I've only used up like 70 or so. It was not one they recommended, by the way. Been using it since launch with no issues yet.

@Bowser05 @dadlm  but I'm telling you sometimes you will want to throw the controller haha

@dadlm  Fair enough (about Mario).

And if it's fun to play that's all that matters. It looks awesome I just forgot to buy it at launch and kept skipping over it.
