Blizzard celebrates eight years of World of Warcraft

Popular MMORPG marks eighth anniversary next week; Blizzard giving away Feat of Strength achievement and Celebration item.

Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft marks its eighth anniversary next week, and to celebrate the occasion, the developer will give away in-game items and achievements. All who log in to World of Warcraft November 18 and December 1 will receive a special Feat of Strength achievement and a Celebration Package item.

This item will shoot off fireworks, apply a cosmetic tabard to players' characters, and grant an 8 percent bonus to experience and reputation from any enemies conquered with it applied. Additionally, Blizzard has produced a video to mark World of Warcraft's latest anniversary that documents the evolution of the game over the years. It is embedded below.

World of Warcraft launched in November 2004. It has since added four expansion packs, the most recent of which was Mists of Pandaria, which launched in September. The game currently boasts 10 million subscribers who pay $15 per month to traverse Azeroth.

This game is a testament to MMO gaming.  Despite the belief that its two latest expansions "dumbed" down the game, WoW was and still is a fantastic gaming experience in which so many people love to pass the time.  I can't wait for more Blizzard games to come.

a nice gift/surprise would have been model remake for the old races... not some shitty fireworks

8 years and the community has degraded to the sort of people that you wish you could just punch their face with your fist. I hate you WoW for creating stupid people. =(

I still remember when this series was a RTS/RPG hybrid kinda game. Way more fun back then lol.

For their 10th year anniversary they should release Warcraft 4.

And still not wanting to play it....

Though in all Seriousness, Well done guys. It's a milestone.

I remember running Karazhan with my friends laughing and betting who was gonna drop from the staircase before the final boss (and there was always someone). I also remember farming Black Temple just trying to get a Zhar'doom (the coolest-looking staff in WoW IMO) for my mage but it never showed up. I hate to be overly nostalgic, but those are good old days.

Let's celebrate 8 years of World of Warcraft by making Warcraft 4 and forgetting about all of this MMO nonsense.

You also get a letter that talks about killing DEATHWING. Blizzard is so lazy they send you the same letter from last year.

I guess I can can celebrate 8 years of not playing it.

Watching the vanilla footage took me back to some great 40 man raid times. The memories were awesome and trying at times. Grats!

I wonder if Doritos and Mountain Dew will be doing some sort of promotion around this anniversary?

PetJel

Is this the same as the 7yr anniversary where the tabard is only showing during the anniversary itself? Also gz to Bliz, even though I don't play anymore I still had some great times in the game.

Congratulations to Blizzard; it speaks volumes that nothing else can touch WoW in the MMO market.  Love or hate Blizzard, this game is the highest echelon of the genre and is mostly uncontested for that spot.  You can lie to yourself and pretend something can, though.

Do wish they'd have given us a pet though, and not some crappy, temporary buff.

I have many fond memories of my time playing WoW.  Met some of my best friends in game, The sheer epicness of finally defeating that boss that you spent weeks and months working on with 39 of your friends and hearing the collective cheers and screams through vent/teamspeak...god I miss those.  Great times were had.

Love it or hate it, any one game that still has a strong following gets my hat tipped to them. My own memories of WoW are nothing but memorable. There were plenty of frustrating times, but I can honestly say... I only remember the good. Heck I still check up old EQ news =P

Why is this news? They've done this literally for the last like 4-5 years.

Blizzard is giving away achievements? That goes against the whole nature of achievements.

Anyway, 8 years old and 10 million accounts, that's quite an achievement (in the proper sense of the word).

only noobs who suck in the game are complaining, noobs who never get what he/she wants in the expansion and when another is out it get really pissed,

go play the gererics then like GW2, SWTOR and the other BOOM things, things that in ONE little year must go free because the gamers get tired of it, WoW is here for so long and still have 10 million how is that shit?

For the Alliance, For the Horde!!!

And here's to one day it will die along with Diablo 3.

How great a day it will be.

Everybody is saying that Mists of Pandaria is bad and WoW is losing subscribers, i dont see it.

Before Mists of Pandaria was launched (like 3 months before) WoW had like 9 million subscribers, and with the launch of Mists of pandaria , it climbed up to the 10 million again.

I really like World of warcraft, its great and before anyone says that mists of pandaria is crappy and that wow is losing a lot of subscribers, go and inform yourself.

DragonRift
DragonRift

Once again, a random WoW article gets posted, and out come all the ex-subscribers from the woodwork... complaining about something so incredibly pointless.

You guys are more concerned with this franchise than the people who still play it.

@wyan_ maybe you can also celebrate for not playing hundreds of other mmo games, unless you did play them all including the most shittiest one.

acelogan1989

@grahf92 so you still believe that wow still got 10 mill subs . LoL.. and dont call anybody 'noob' just because he/she play other mmo ..

@Truth_Hurts_U Wtf you're butthurt because people enjoy a game you dont like? Thats pathetic.

gufberg
gufberg

@mariopedroti People have said that since WoW came out. Check any wow-news commentary section in recorded history. Its filled with people saying "GW FACTIONS IS OUT! WOW IS DYING" then "VANGUARD IS OUT WOW IS GOING DOWN NOW!" then this same shit with Lotro, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Aion, Star Wars and Guild Wars 2. WoW just seem to be uniquely capable of attracting non-WoW gamers who are butthurt because its a popular game.

 @DragonRift

And once again someone complains about people complaining, making your post even more pointless

kawaiiflonne
kawaiiflonne

@DragonRift I agree, it is cool to see it is still around, what is the big deal. I know it isn't as good, as it use to be, but there is still 10 million people who still love it.

DragonRift
DragonRift

@Gamer3344 Being that Mists caused their sub levels to climb back up over 10 million, the chances of it dying anytime soon just got slimmer.

grahf92
grahf92

@acelogan1989 our beloved GameSpot here is the one to blame about the 10 million pal, and no i did not call them noobs because they play other MMO, I call them noobs because its ridiculous that people who dropped the game for any reason start talking shit about someone who still enjoy it,  if you don't like ok, but you cannot joke about WoW achievment, 'cause in my view this is something that a fanboy from another MMO franchise who is jealous, so don't get me wrong please, i just get mad at people who like to piss on one's taste, thats all!!

s4dn3s5
s4dn3s5

@acelogan1989  @grahf92 even if WoW had 5 million subs, that would still be more than any other mmorpg in history. GW2 is a failure, people played the first month and dropped when they found out there was no endgame, SWTOR is dead and WoW is still the king 8 years after release.

northArrow

 @gufberg

After reading your posts, you have an unhealthy obsession with butts hurting. You might want to lay off the Goldshire for a while.

Hurvl

@northArrow  And you're complaining about somebody complaining about people who are complaining, so what does that make you?

northArrow

 @DragonRift  @Gamer3344

Cataclysm caused their sub levels to rise in the first few months after release too, but at the end of its life cycle WoW was down 3 million subs. I think it's foolish to expect anything different. Blizzard will enjoy its little bump in sub numbers for a few more months and then everyone will eventually hit the wall, run out of content and move on

@GamerMani  @carlitoqc No, Activision owns Blizzard Entertainment.  ActivisionBlizzard is a subsidiary of Activision.  Sorry to make you sound stupid but...you are.  Get your shit straight before you start running off at the mouth about something.

gufberg

@northArrow So? I'll gladly replace it with synonomous words if you have any you're more comfortable with. Also i dont play WoW anymore. The pandas didn't appeal to me.

DragonRift
DragonRift

@northArrow  @Gamer3344 My point of the reply was that they're not gong to go "okay, time to pull the plug" when their numbers are still healthy.  Even if they dropped down to 4 million, they're still the MMO with the most subscribers. When people go all like "Oh man, they need to kill it!", it's like asking Apple to stop making iPhones.  :|
