Blizzard announces Diablo III expansion Reaper of Souls

New Diablo III expansion will include a new character class, a new act, and new loot mechanics.

Blizzard has officially announced the Diablo III expansion Reaper of Souls at Gamescom 2013.

Game director Josh Mosqueira introduced the new expansion during a Blizzard press conference at Gamescom 2013. Mosquiera said the game will feature a brand-new fifth act to pit players against new villain Malthael, a fallen angel. The expansion will take a darker tone than the original Diablo III campaign, Blizzard adds, and will be set in the gothic environment Westmarch.

Blizzard did not mention a release date for Reaper of Souls.

Reaper of Souls will introduce a new class, the Crusader, and increase the level cap to 70. All of the game's classes will get new skills, passive abilities, and runes. The Crusader class is a descendent of the Paladin order and includes a version of the Fist of the Heavens skill seen in Diablo II.

Mosqueira said Diablo III's end-game content would also be improved with a new feature, Loot Runs, and an upgrade to the Paragon system. Loot Runs will be entirely randomly generated dungeons designed to take between 15 and 20 minutes to complete, and the Paragon mechanic will now be account-wide, will have no cap, and will allow players to modify the base stats of their characters.

Blizzard says it wants to change the game's philosophy towards loot, with the expansion now dropping less but better loot. Using the example of a playthrough in Act III, the Reaper of Souls expansions dropped 73 white items as opposed to 256 in the original game. The Act III playthrough also dropped six legendary items, as opposed to one in a Diablo III run.

Legendary items in Reaper of Souls will also now tailor themselves around character builds, adds Blizzard, such as a wizard weapon that has a chance to summon a hydra when killing an enemy. The mystic artisan will also return, allowing players to transmogrify items and tailor the look of characters. The mystic will also be able to enchant items.

The company had previously hinted at the expansion with a teaser website and the promise of a "special announcement" at the European trade show.

Diablo III launched on PC and Mac in May 2012. Blizzard will be bringing Diablo III to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September, and to the PlayStation 4 in 2013.

Got to give it to them, Blizzards still makes some of the best cgi movies.

Anyhow, I didn't buy the PC version due to the online DRM foolishness, but I'll look at the X360 version once it gets bundled with this expansion in a game-of-the-year edition.

Zyamaman is awesome, I just heard him quoted on Feedbackula. Also, I should go back to D1 and D2 to enjoy this franchise. Jesus, how did I get swindled out of $60, at $20 I wouldn't have been as annoyed, except for them somehow ruining this awesome series.

Hopefully this will be free or at reduced cost for those who had to suffer through the first year during the reign of Jay Wilson the destroyer of worlds! Rofl! Seriously though, discount.

Blizzard save your game with 2 things:

1) New itemization that narrows the gap between same items power so the best possible roll is at best 20% better than the worst possible rool for the same item.

.

2) Create a new server without auction house.

Thank me later.

That's fair enough, at least you identified a definite, specific issue with it. For the record, my cousins, who are much more into D3 than I am, had the same complaints about it. My issue is with the folks, like the other guy who replied to me, who just said "plenty of reasons" with some insulting words and assume everyone has to agree with them.

Seemed like a piece of crap honestly. Does blizzard think its still 1996?

seems this expansion fixes most d3 problems, like useless loot or cheesy backgrounds. too bad the latter will only be true to act 5, I'd like to see all acts more gothic and dark.

Is the expansion PC exclusive or will it come to PS3 & Xbox360 too?

Minecraft is a much better buy, and it's more fun.  Plus, you can create content.

Have the original D3 and will def buy the expansion. The sheer amount of fun ive had with D3 is immense. Yes the RMAH and AH system in the current D3 are very broken because the economy in D3 alltogether has gone to s**t, but with new content and a new loot system things will get a lot better...for some time...

The amount of idiotic comments on this article are simply pathetic. I agree people have the right to express their opinions, but all I see are childish nostalgic assholes whine and bitch about how D3 isn't as good as D2. I'm sorry, but it's just a game, stop acting like the faults of this game have devastating impacts on the human race. We've heard the same god damn whining comments a million times now, no one seems to give  a shit so please shut it and try to create a more constructive comment. I for one don't think this game is the most perfect thing out there, but I still have fun with it. Yes, the RMAH is kinda lame, and it feels a little more linear, but it's still incredibly polished and fun to play with your mates. I can tell the developers really do care about their game, and want to fix what people were complaining about, so please calm the hell down, and stop making comments that are no better then a raging child.

Don't expect much of these. But my only wish towards Diablo III is that I could play the game with English voices, portuguese voices are so crappy and dumb. Diablo didn't even sound evil when I first met him in the game

Think it's curious that ever since Blizzard teamed up with Activision, they suck now. Just like EA used to suck (now Battlefield is better than COD and so on).

Play first (especially since they have fixed and added a lot of new stuff, for free like they always do) and see how good it is.

I think i'm gonna wait for the GOTY edition of this game.

fail and fail.

Blizzard should concetrate creating movies than games.

Those stupid kids that they have hired for game developing are worthless piece of garbage and of course fags

I'd be much more excited if they just announced the next WoW expansion as well. :I

Guess I can wait 2 more months for blizzcon...

This is amusing Blizzard said Diablo 3 took years and years and even more years to make if I am correct and when it finally came out it was shorter then 6 hours long which is pathetic for any form of rpg action or otherwise and that many years any other company could have shot out a 100+ hour long game easy. This has a whole new act OMG and new tank class whoopee ..(as we know how they screwed up the two they got already)  so I see this expansion which will probably cost nearly as much as the retail release lasting a good maybe 30 min to 45 min long. I love D2 and its expansion made it shine but I don't feel it will save D3 as one act isn't nothing in a already short game.

IN OTHER NEWS: Elder Scrolls Online will cost $15 a month on top of initial game purchase.

I can't believe that some people still defends the damn RMAH, i'm not talking about the people here i'm talking about other sites with tons of blizz fanboys like mmo champion, damn even Jay Wilson said that the RMAH will hurt the game even before release.

@MigGui

Without itemization changes and auction house removal, this expansion is as worthy as Superman64 for the N64.

VarietyMage

@Badw0lf1993 No, I won't quit complaining about how D3 sucks compared to D2.  And until I get a D2-like Diablo game (which D3 isn't), D3 will still suck in comparison to D2 and to pre-rewrite D3.  And Blizzard said nothing about single-player offline being in the expansion, so the expansion is still a no-go for me because my internet connection sucks.  Way to go, Blizzard.

Murissokah

@SupaTrupa At this point, the only way I see for Diablo to return to its former glory is if they ever considered selling the franchise. Activision-Blizzard lacks the vision that Blizzard North had.

floridadragon67
floridadragon67

@Wrathesoul Wow. Did you even play I? Took a lot longer than 6 hours. The best anyone did was 12 hours, and to go all the way through Inferno takes a lot longer. 6 hours, ha.

Seifer24

@toakr yeah fuck that.

I wanted to play eso but im not giving them a dime except if their game hits 11 score in gamespot.Which i doubt.

VarietyMage
VarietyMage

@aovannor @VarietyMage Why not?  You fight mobs, you farm loot, you can play multiplayer if you want, and you can create your own content (which you can't in D3).  Minecraft has just as much story as D3 does (none - the story is horribly written), and you don't need a Real Money Auction House to survive.  Also, Minecraft is $26, about half as much as D3.  Why bother with D3 at all?  D3 isn't Diablo, it's a beta for Titan that they sold us for some flash cash.  I won't waste any more money on that crap - I'd sooner buy Torchlight 2.  And Minecraft *is* more fun than D3.

Badw0lf1993
Badw0lf1993

@VarietyMage @Badw0lf1993 What about Torchlight 2? I heard that's the closest thing to the D3 you people wanted. I personally loved D2 as well and T2 was the closest thing to that sort of gameplay. I honestly think people are wasting their breath and come off as immature by all this non constructive criticism, but hey cry away I suppose.

macaque12
macaque12

@Murissokah @macaque12 I bought the physical version, so it's limited to the portuguese version. And it's crap anyway (engraçado que estamos falando em inglês, sendo que ambos falam português hahah)

talonsgrave
talonsgrave

@Murissokah @SupaTrupa actually its Activision that lacks the vision to create good games they just see money and try to grab at it and choke it to death till they get every penny out of it they can. Look at the Call of Duty franchise they hadn't had a good Call of Duty since CoD4 MW.

@VarietyMage @PutU2REM @Mogzsnet gg, compare random sh*t together and start an argument just to prove a messed up point of view of comparing sandbox with diablo or whatever.

VarietyMage
VarietyMage

@PutU2REM @VarietyMage @Mogzsnet And you're both missing the point.  You can have a lot more fun with Minecraft than D3, and for cheaper, and without having to buy an expansion in order to access the updates.  The fun is the operable word, something that D3 terribly lacks.

PutU2REM
PutU2REM

@VarietyMage @Mogzsnet  What Mogzsnet is saying (and what I'm agreeing with him about) is that comparing Minecraft and D3 is like comparing CoD and ArmA, or Civilization and Starcraft 2. They have superficial similarities, but in the end they're incredibly different and non-interchangeable experiences.

VarietyMage
VarietyMage

@Mogzsnet @VarietyMage @aovannor No, I'm quite intelligent...except when I bought D3 thinking it was a better D2.  D3 isn't fun, especially with its (soon to be even more) broken economy, lack of single-player offline gameplay, poor itemization, and numerous other downgrades from D2.  As I said, Minecraft is more fun, and cheaper than buying the D3 expansion, which will result in even more disappointment in the Diablo community.

Badw0lf1993
Badw0lf1993

@VarietyMage @Badw0lf1993 True, I actually 100% agree with you, but can you honestly tell me that complaints you see are mature in any way? 90% are simply people saying "I hate this and this and this" in the most rude way imaginable. Then again this IS the internet, but I can dream. Honestly at this point considering how long the game has been out, is there really any reason to complain about the same things when it released? Stop kicking the dead horse and move on...

VarietyMage
VarietyMage

@Badw0lf1993 @VarietyMage You are entitled to your own opinion.  However, if everyone takes the crap ActiBlizz and other supposed game developers are shoveling, and no one complains, then the devs have no reason to change the crap they give us.  So I will keep complaining in case people forget how awesome D2 was, and how crappy D3 is and will always be (now that the expansion has been laid out for us).
