Blitz flagged with $20 tag

Midway's unlicensed football game takes pay cut to keep playing; Greatest Hits and Platinum Hits status achieved on PS2, Xbox.

Blitz: The League was the Rudy of sports games when it was released last October. Considered a long shot full of no-names and lacking the skills necessary to compete in the same league as Electronic Arts' Madden NFL series, Blitz entered the season as a serious underdog.

Then something strange happened. The M-rated game sold beyond expectations, propelling Midway to an 84 percent increase in December sales from 2004 to 2005.

Today, Midway announced that the game has achieved Platinum Hits status on the Xbox and Greatest Hits status on the PlayStation 2. The game will now be redistributed with new cover art and will retail for $19.99.

According to Midway, to reach both Platinum Hits and Greatest Hits statuses, a publisher is required to manufacture 400,000 units for each platform during its first nine months in retail. Midway claims to have shipped nearly 1 million copies of Blitz: The League since its release.

Blitz: the League is also in development for the PlayStation Portable and Xbox 360, both editions of which are expected to be released this fall. For more information on the game, read GameSpot's review.

Blitz games were the only sports games I ever loved besides wrestling or Punch-out. Bring on the Wii version!

Lol, too bad EA bought out the NFL license. I just can't picture myself playing with generic teams.

Meh, "who cares", I'm not much into sports games of any kind , really. though I did get All-Star Baseball 2003, from Aklaim, before they went belly up., that was really the last one though.

I may have to check this out. I really wish it had a regular franchise mode. The whole story thing doesnt interest me that much.

The only time Blitz sucked was when they tried to make a Madden clone, and failed. This one is the football game i've always wanted. Don't let the NFL catch you with it, they're all stiff tight asses anyway. If you want a break from the tea and crumpet football and want some real pigskin brutality, now is the perfect time!

Well, thats the power of a good "M" rated game. Go Blitz... You will win.

Why do these publishers always neglect good ol' Nintendo? I can't stand it!

I wasnt impressed with this game. I appreciate what it was going for, but it fell short in my opinion. And what's up with not having 11 players onfield on each side? They try that "This is what the NFL is REALLY like" BS and then short each team.

I loved this game and still play it a lot with my friends. I introduced both my neighbors to it and they went out and bought it too. But I'm a little biased I guess, I even liked Blitz Pro from a few years ago TO on the cover...and that game seemed to be universally hated. Oh well, great to see it sold well, can't wait to see it on the next-gen...

I'm glad they punked EA. I like the Madden games but still hate that EA has exclusive NFL game rights. Way to go Midway.

That's really impressive. I didn't expect the game to sell that well. Great news for Midway and the football fans of Blitz that haven't bought the game yet.

Blitz is a great game... good to see it's been priced at $20.

We need more fun games like this to counter the almost religious seriousness attached to the whole NFL business.

I had alot of fun with this game, I'm glad it sold well because that means a sequel will be in the works for the next-gen consoles.

I wonder if the controls are going to be changed for the Wii version.

It makes it that much harder to decide whether I should wait out for the Wii version or not. I think I'll wait my friend has it for Xbox, he said it was pretty sick.

Platinum Blitz? Time for my cheap ass to finally buy it.

Gotta love the sense of humor Midway put in Blitz. Dirty hits and juicing players? You'd never see that in an NFL licensed game. I just wish they still let you hit guys after the whistle in this version of Blitz.

I don't care about the price or the game

I am hoping for a new one personally, not a port. I can't see why they would not do a sequel seeing as how well this blitz sold.

Nice price can't wait to see it on the 360. Maybe if lucky the 360 and PSP one will be different then the other Blitz game. I liked it on the N64 and can't wait to see where Blitz can go in the future.
