Bleszinski: "More developers need to be known"

Former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski says industry stands to benefit if "rockstars" like Ken Levine and David Jaffe get more mainstream recognition.

Outspoken former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski believes developers should receive more mainstream recognition for the products they create.

"I think more developers need to be known," Bleszinski told CNN. "I think Ken Levine is a total rockstar game designer. More people should know who he is because BioShock Infinite is genius. David Jaffe; all these folks."

Jaffe was a principal designer on the original God of War and Twisted Metal games.

"And I want to get to know them and I remember as a child I wanted to know more about Shigeru Miyamoto, who's the genius behind Mario," he added. "I just think it's common sense to put these developers out there."

Bleszinski is no stranger to the public eye. He has graced the stage at various E3s throughout the years, has appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and most recently gave the keynote address at PAX East 2013.

He left Epic Games in October after 20 years with the Gears of War studio.

Cliffy B wants to be the 'Rockstar' now that he's on the outs with former fans and colleagues.

Devs just need to make a good game and without drm, and they will be known i no time. Cough *CDRP* cough.

I agree with him but Cliff is only saying this because it would benefit HIM. He just happened to find another example outside of himself, somehow rearing his head out of his arse.

fame is a disease that eats at your mind and soul, who the F***K would want that????

NO fame breeds arrogance and later despair, its just another path to the dark side

Cliffy B. is still the man. Been following him since he joined Epic Games. I remember reading a magazine where they introduced him as a prodigy.

Can someone shut this guy up??? He thinks people care about his opinion and want to see him. The only reason people knew him is because he took every photo op he could while making Gears of war. He's no longer at Epic, so who cares about what he does now anyways?!?! I wonder if the others at Epic also thought he was annoying like most of us gamers do.

What gaming needs is new blood every year making low budget games new IP's and giving us the gamers an alternative to Gears of War Judgment or God of War Ascension.I don't need Bioshock 4 or Gears of War 4 from Levin and Clify.

I'm quite sure Jaffe and Lavine are perfectly fine with their low key celebrity status.

But I can't say the same for this guy. I've been hearing way too much from this Cliff B.

Cliffy my boy you are absolutely right!! Great developers should have a place among the stars, although, the real question is do they want to? We all know you do.

He has a point. How often do you see "a game by" on a video game box as compared to other mediums?

So many bright people behind the scenes making magic. A lot of them deserve the spot light but then many of them are not so socially capable that they'd sell the product they represent.

Am I the only one here that can't fucking stand this guy??!!??

Hes been flying WAY too high in the air after the success of the Gears Of War games....what the hell does he think of himself??

Sorry Bleszinski but you're not the God of the gaming industry and the gaming industry doesn't revolve around you..

Wow how funny just the other day I was talking to a friend how I wish gaming use to be like when we were kids.  I didn't care who made the game as long as it was fun it didn't matter.  Sorry but game developers aren't rock stars or pro athletes.  Sadly i know more than i would ever want to about developers and publishing companies

Most gamers know who Ken Levine is from System Shock and they know Jaffe from GOW and especially twisted metal. Cliff just wants to sound like he cares about the industry, despite him being on the forefront for DRM on consoles...

It probably wouldn't hurt to have people associate games with people rather than faceless corporations.

I'm not saying game designers don't do any work... but damn, can we get some love for programmers?  They're the ones that actually make the games function.

Programmers are wheels.  They're by far and away the most important component of a car(even with no engine, it'll move if you find a nice hill), but at the end of the day they're also those things that dogs piss on.

Nyet nyet nyet.

The less seen or spoken developers the better, developers live in a fantasy reality and some really think their biased self-serving ideals save their companies.  If I have to hear more BS ideas from folks like David Jaffe or that Volition douchey with his feeling used speech about used games (consumers can't feel used, m I right? dear self-serving Volition guy).

It is always in everyone's best interest if they only are their being mouthpieces about their games, last thing I need is to hear more of their crap these days.  Shiggy at least gets his role, which is why he has survived so long.  Some of these western guys ever since the John Romero incident, they all typically come off as arrogant know-it-all douchebags.  They only know how to run someone else's company to the ground it seems.

hahahaha

the music industry doesn't have many rock stars left these days, not real ones.

What kind of dues will these gane rock stars have paid?  Made a game within a 2 year time frame or less?  WOW.  Rock stars were built on releasing 2 or 3 full length albums a year for several years (even up till the late 70's), grueling tour regimes and living a life that balanced excess self destruction with life-changing-creative-inspiration for others. Advocating free spiritedness too

What do AAA game designers do? Work late for a guaranteed salary, 401K package, benefits, etc... delay milestone after milestone because the recreational gaming sessions around the office keep eating into too much work time (if you don't think this happens.. it does, way too often)? Rush out inferior products that require further patching that still don't cut it for the bloated budget pumped into the title?

This from a man that advocates taking AWAY your basic consumer rights with DRM so you can't even borrow/rent games anymore to make sure you're not pissing your money away on yet another piece of shit overglossed AAA title?

Besides, there are designers that have already achieved the game version of rock star status. Carmack still holds the crown... what about Molynuex, Chris Roberts, etc.

Fuck, even that hipster Minecraft dude has more class than this clown!

His best option is a new reality TV show. Maybe he can host M$ executives and EA executives on his yacht. They can all sit around and bitch about how the 30 million a year they make is preventing them from doing anything original. Curt Schlinning, may luck favor him after his failed 38 studios, has more balls than the lot of them put together. KoAR was a better game than anything this cry baby put out.

@skornedwarrior Nope. They still value him. He is the main reason their studio succeeded. Unreal Tournament and Gears of War were his creation.

Yeah if the devs got more credit it would just create more sales for their games. Just like with movies, anytime I see Chris Nolan's name associated with a film I'm going to see it 9/10.

@jinzo9988 amen. Thinking up great ideas is easy. I did it when I was 10 and I still think of great game designs and ideas today. I have handfuls of them. Many would be hits imo.

Now, actually building the game? THAT is true talent...

jecomans
jecomans

@jinzo9988 Directors are the most important part of that machine. Most programmers are highly competent these days. That's not to shun the individual efforts, but that's why a bad director can produce a crap film from a great script even if they have a top notch cast and crew.

EddieDominguez
EddieDominguez

I'm going to have to disagree. Programmers do great work but it really takes a great creative mind to come up with a concept like Bioshock or Skyrim.

@SpookyHoobster he's been pushing his idiotic opinions for awhile, he's just been ignored because he is... an idiot.

But now that E3 has made the XBone DRM fiasco THE talk of the gaming industry, Cliff finally has his moment to shine, because he's probably been the most enthusiastic arse wipe trying to encourage a DRM centric change for consoles.

He's one of these idiots that still pushes piracy claims about overall gaming (but he has pointed to PC in particular a few times) without realising more people are starting to crack on to the fact that all those so called studies into piracy have been so inadequately executed AND skewed that they are nothing more than pro-DRM propaganda.

He's clearly let the success of the Unreal 3 engine go to his head.

skornedwarrior

@MERGATROYDER He may have had some unique ideas, and support of a multi-million dollar studio...but he's still a cocky annoying attention starved human being. Who cares what he has to say, unless its unveiling a new game?

@eriktkire why is he an idiot, hes been game designing since he was 17. hes in charge of a billion dollar game, he knows more than you moron kid who doesnt have 1/10th success as he does, shut ur mouth

eriktkire

@JustSignedUphaha... fanboy huh?

Firstly, money does not = success or brilliance. That logic would place Kotick in a greater position of importance than all the major influential designers in the industry combiuned.  And his games are not known for being revolutionary for their game design. Epic is known for the Unreal Engine, Gears was not a grass roots success, it has had massive amounts of marketing put into it from day one.  Max Payne, Doom, etc... those are games that were remarkable for their actual design at the time.

Secondly... hehe, I ain't no kid, and you don't know what my success is in life.  But let's pretend for a second I am a snot nosed gamer... how does that change the fact that this dude is talking out his arse about things the gamer community at large is LOUDLY against.

I've got a job, a well paying job, you don't need to know what industry because I don't need to validate myself to you, all you need to be aware of is I am one of the strongest voices in the games community.  I am an adult that can afford to buy games without a thought of "budgeting"... money from gamers like myself define the part of the industry that is well supported for it's quality, not because of media hype and bloated advertising campaigns.

Your mom might be the reason why 'you' helped to fund things like CoD and Gears of War... I'm the reason why something like Star Citizen is being made.
