Blacklight: Retribution, Primal Carnage: Genesis coming to PS4

Sony confirms new games from Zombie Studios, Lukewarm headed to next-gen platform; Spelunky coming to PS3, PS Vita.

by

During a media presentation this evening as part of the 2013 Game Developers Conference, Sony announced that Blacklight: Retribution and Primal Carnage: Genesis are headed to the PlayStation 4.

Developed by Zombie Studios, Blacklight: Retribution is a free-to-play title and the first game from Sony's Pub Fund for the PS4. The game launched last year for the PC.

A trailer for Primal Carnage: Genesis was shown, depicting a Tyrannosaurus rex escaping from a laboratory. The game runs on the Unreal Engine 4 and is described as a "story-driven" experience that will be released episodically.

"It was a difficult decision for us, given the relative newness of episodic storytelling," game director Ashton Andersen said in a statement. "Ultimately, the episodic method ended up being the clear victor due to the versatile nature of creating a story episode by episode."

Sony also announced today that Spelunky is headed to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The game launched last summer for the Xbox 360 and PC to a positive critical reception.

Lastly, Sony also confirmed earlier reports that The Walking Dead and Limbo are headed to the PS Vita, though no release dates were divulged.

TRexes are like "special" dinosaurs with their puny hands. Its amazing people consider this oddly shaped dinosaur the king of the dinosaurs when its so freaking handicap.

Could care less about those 2 games. Already have Spelunky, Limbo and The Walking Dead. Nothing really here for me.

That Bokeh DoF is really amazing looking,, though.  That alone is gonna add scads of realism to games.

I'm starting to get tempted by the Vita. I only got a PSP last year and couldn't believe how good it was! Wouldn't mind getting a new piece of hardware with a growing library of games I've been meaning to play (even if most of them are ports)

Still waiting to see a game use this engine in a larger capacity.  It's so easy to create emergent gameplay with all this physics-processing power.

Like Deep Down.  Watch the 20 min. Unreal Engine 4 demonstration from Epic, then watch that trailer again, and it's easy to see that that was all real-time.

Or even better, go watch gameplay footage of the Warframe PC 7.0 Update, with Nvidia's new Apex physics patch, and you'll see things that will make your jaw hit the floor, I kid you not.

Because of those things, this felt a tad bit underwelming.

Not impressed with these graphics, honestly...................... and a point and click dinosaur thriller?  not very thrilling.

PS4 is already looking great with the titles being announced, to think I was worried about not having good choices in the beginning.  Primal Carnage is exactly what I've been wanting since Dino Crisis wasn't quite as great as I wanted, and that itch to be in a story similar to Jurassic park with suspense and action in a top notch game. and a free to play game, I'm also hoping for eventual Minecraft 2.0 for PS4 and vita maybe!? maybe maybe

I'm beginning to think the PS4 might be an early purchase for me, just itching to upgrade

Oh, shit. The U4 looked great. Wasn't a huge fan of U3 with all the blurry pop in textures, but hears hoping this next engine fixes those problems. The sound quality was amazing as well. Definitely excited to pick up a PS4. Can't wait.

Primal carnage, there you go, a proper Unreal engine 4 demo! Unlike the one they showed at the PS4 conference....

Could care less about Blacklight. Awful series to begin with. Another Sub-par title in an over-saturated genre to begin with.

That said, Primal Carnage looks like it could be amazing! This past generation I can't help but feel like there's been way too much focus on Zombies and I've always felt the one thing videogames haven't truly taken advantage of yet is Dinosaurs. Maybe the PS4/720 will be the age of the Dinosaur. I would be ok with that :D

Curious to see if it'll come out for the 720 as well as the PS4. It seems likely the only reason they didn't announce it is because MS still has a Non-Disclosure Agreement with it's developers not to discuss the 720 publicly until it's official reveal in April.

I should have run away after reading episodic, but no, I had to continue and read free to play. Painful, call me when games are announced.

If dinosaurs could somehow be cloned in a lab and set free they would die from a simple flue. I mean they missed 65 million years of evolution so they are not even fit to breath our air!

Surprised they haven't yet announced Planetside 2 for PS4, since it is a Sony IP, and the PS4 should have the hardware power to handle it

this is amazing i enjoyed playing Blacklight retribution on PC more the reason to get it on Next gen PS4 as well now it would be amazing to see what sony does as far as getting Planetside 2 on the PS4 since they own it

i already posted about this on ps3trophies. while the dinosaur theme is very interesting. the trailer is cliche as hell. the camera zoom, eye suddenly opening, off course the dinosaur was going to break free from the chamber and lastly the deep pitch horn sound effect used in every action/horror movie trailer in the past 2 years. seriously this "horn" sound effect is in every trailer these days, i understand it gives a sense of being epic, but its freakin everywhere !!!

This game is like the newer COD's but better. It has much deeper customization, non-cheap melee,  a reward system similar to Halo 4's ordinance system, plus some cool stuff like mechs.

Good for Sony fans, its a pretty decent FPS.

Man I just posted on the Limbo announcement that Sony is going nutzo with the indie support lately. They are on a rampage mission to get every damn person with a game on there resume.

Love to see this sort of thing happening now. Its a win win win in my opinion. It gives Sony the positive press it needs and also helps out good game devs AND the consumer.

If this is the kind of initiative Sony has in store for the PS4, man they are going to steam roll the competition.

The Unity support is so HUGE a lot of people might not understand. Think Steam diversity and support but on a console! This is another great move to further close that gap between console and PC.

Xbox wants to be the ultimate multimedia device in the home for their next gen. Sony already did that, now they want to be the ultimate everything in your home. Finally their commercials and ads speak truths.

@PlayStation4k I agree with what you said  and that this game will bring back the times of Dino Crisis and boy this is exciting! My wanted games are Killzone 4 and Primal Carnage. I'm looking forward to good times with PS4 already..

@NexApex I'm guessing the blurry pop-in textures were a hardware issue that the engine was just dealing with, it's not something you'll be likely to find happening on next gen consoles.

@ShakyMonkey Actually, I expected more smoke and debris.  I've seen better in current games.  Also, the water didn't splash.  Not even a 2D texture image of water spray.

@DarkImpact2021 Blacklight is just a futuristic CoD clone... but it is of AAA production quality and free to play. Whether you like it or not games like Blacklight are what we need in the industry, because if F2P games start matching the quality and mechanics of purchased titles then publishers and devs are going to have to step up their game and deliver higher quality, more intuitive products if they want to make sales. This is something all gamers will benefit from

@milomell Why? Both of these games will more than likely be on the next Xbox also. So far Killzone, Drive Club and Infamous are the only next gen games that have been shown/talked about that will be Playstation 4 exclusives.

@Spartan_418 I reckon PlanetSide 2 for PC is just a beta... It was probably always going to be made for the PS4. If indeed it is a PS4 title, the fanbase of PlanetSide should definitely leap ahead. I've been excited to play the game, but my PC can hardly run it. The world is way to massive.

gamespotgunners
gamespotgunners

@Arab_Spring I kind of agree in a way after watching it again but what made the trailer exciting for me is the fact the game is drawing comparisons to 'The Walking Dead' and I loved me a bi of hat experience, so it can never be bad having another story to play through on the PS4. Well, I'm assuming they can implement it hopefully as well as TellTale.

gamespotgunners
gamespotgunners

@WingChopMasta Agreed. For me Sony have adopted a very good, well-rounded attitude towards devs and this is both helping the PS Vita and also will help the PS4 in its lifecycle. If they can kep up this approach they will be the preferred platform which is always good news for a a console maker. I think if Xbox want to do well with gamers that have to adopt a similar attitude and go in for the games, although commercially I think Microsoft know how to be at the epitome of sensaionalism with odd accessories which might steal some of Sony;s intial thunder to casual gamers or families.

NexApex
NexApex

@MurderMode @NexApex  Yeah, could be, but never the less it still kind of bugged me while playing Gears and Batman. In truth these were on consoles (X360/PS3 respectivaly) and I'm not to familiar with the PC conterpart, so my comment can't be geared toward that direction.

@JayQproductions am more of a playstation guy i don't like the path xbox is going with lack of exclsuive and pay to play a game online i strongly believe if i buy a console and a game cd i should have the right to play it free online because am already paying for my internet bill no need to pay another extra fee just to play online free with frens and if xbl wud cover the cost to get free game now and then like psn plus i wouldn't complain

Arab_Spring
Arab_Spring

@gamespotgunners oh yeah it is episodic, so it is similar in structure to the walking dead. i hope it is as good too. the dinosaur theme hasn't been done that much at all. actually the only dino game i know of is dino crisis. if this is good itll catch on like wildfire i bet. if they succeed, dinos will become the new zombies. if they dont itll be a shame. hope it turns out good

@baxwam @Mr_BillGates F2P is a happy future. If most games have to survive off a regularly returning consumer base then we are just going to get better and better titles as each company fights to earn it's market share.

MurderMode

@NexApex Yeah that sounds like a hardware issue to me, the consoles probably couldn't load the textures fast enough the engine renders placeholders til everything has loaded in. PS4 tech sounds quite high end so you won't run into those issues again. Unreal 3 was great, it was well optimized so it could run impressive games on even the weakest of systems... U4 is even more impressive, so with suffcient tech behind it games are going to look amazing
