Black Wii holiday bundle launches later this month

Nintendo's new hardware bundle comes with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Nunchuk, and Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack.

by

The Wii is gearing up to face its final holiday as Nintendo's flagship home console with a new black system bundle. This new bundle includes a black Wii system, a black Wii Remote Plus, a black Nunchuk, and a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It also includes a soundtrack with selections from Super Mario Galaxy that will be exclusive to this package.

The new Wii features a horizontal orientation.

One of the more unique aspects of this new bundle is the Wii system itself, as Nintendo has made a few tweaks to the hardware. The new configuration gives the Wii a horizontal orientation, rather than vertical, and GameCube software and hardware are no longer supported.

This newly configured bundle joins the still-available Mario Kart Wii bundle at retail on October 23 for $149.99.

lol its just Wii without the vertical stand base (save some $ of plastic) & no GameCube support (neutered)...talk about marketing BS at work "oh look new Wii with HORIZONTAL orientation" Isn't this only from NoE? ...NoA didn't want it right?

they should put on the front of the box that the system does not have gamecube support otherwise they might tick off a few people who want the wii and thought it would play gamecube games too!

Don't wait for WII U cos i have read in one article that Nintendo will released WII U in the end of 2012.

If it isn't obvious enough already, Xenoblade, Last Story and Pandora's Tower will be HD'd and released for the Wii U soon after the Wii U launches. That way, around launch, the Wii U will seem like it has a robust library, and buy Nintendo some time to develop more software. Anyway, $149 is far too expensive for a Gamecube that doesn't play Gamecube games.

@Megamandrew Saying Nintendo refused to release games for the Wii is a major stretch, considering that without them, we wouldn't have gotten Mario Galaxy, Donkey Kong Country Returns, or Metroid Prime 3. Heck, Skyward Sword wouldn't be coming out if that was the case. Just because NoA refuses to localize those three games (Xenoblade, Last Story, Pandora's Tower), doesn't mean they refuse to release anything else.

Isn't it awesome how Nintendo continues to release different Wii bundles, but absolutely refuses to release any games for it? That's a sound marketing strategy right there.

I could waste my money on this but i know if I wait for the Wii U it'll be worth my while since it's comin out next year

They could've at least added a HDMI port so I could play on my computer monitor or something. But then again I wouldn't be playing very often without GameCube support. No dice.

No GC support, no deal... sorry Nintendo.

"The new configuration gives the Wii a horizontal orientation, rather than vertical" ...ok? I've been having my Wii horizontal since forever.

The boundle looks nice but i don't want to get rid of my GameCube support (sold my GC a couple of years ago) i'm planning to sell my Wii so i thought this bundle would be nice...but nop, gonna get the other one instead with Mario Kart Wii.

Nintendo probably thinks the casual audience won't notice the lack of GameCube support and buy it anyways. They are maximizing their profits at the expense of anything possible.

why would you want this? no Gamecube support? WTF?

lol pass on this one. No BC? I don't think so. Glad I bought one a few months ago to be ready for Skyward Sword. Honestly I think the Gamecube was more successful than the Wii in terms of game quality and competitiveness graphically. My opinion though.

I thought the new version of the Nintendo Wii that no longer has Gamecube compatibities was a Europe only Release? taking out Gamecube controller ports/memory card slots/and the Wii vertical stand will save Nintendo $10.00 at this point in 2011. Since this is the final last harrah for The Nintendo Wii (Nintendo's greatest Videogame console in terms of Sales numbers, anyway) Nintendo could have at least included a second controller. Since "New Super Mario Brothers Wii" is at least a 2 player game. (up to 4 people at the same time. But most people will play the standard 2 people at the same time routine. This will help Nintendo reach the 100 million consoles sold sales mark. I guess Nintendo figured out that people lay their Wii console flat, and very few people ever bothered playing gamecube games on the Nintendo Wii. MS and Sony have given up on Backwards Compatibilties. So Nintendo is last to join in on current videogame market trends. So this is an "offical redesign" for the Wii Since all versions of Nintendo videogame consoles have 2 versions, even the ones that Nintnedo didn't do so well in sales numbers. The Gamecube (Panasonic Q Gamecube) and The Nintendo 64 (Smaller Pokemon Pikachoo purple edition) So looks like the Wii "wins" the 7th Generation Console sales War. 78 Million consoles sold thus far. So this will help Nintendo Reach the 100 Million mark? Something only Sony has done with Home videogame consoles. Twice.. Can the Big N do it?

what is the point in getting this? why not just wait for the Wii U

If Nintendo wants people to buy it, then they need to release it for $129.99 in Gold with the Wii port of Zelda Collector's Edition.

No GCN support is awful. Sure, the GCN lets you play GBA games too, but I love playing Naruto and Smash Bros with a GCN style controller.

Holding out for Wii U, personally. I don't believe the Wii plays Gamecube games any differently/better than the GameCube did so I'll stick with my GameCube. But by the time Wii U comes out I have around 16-20 Wii only games I need to catch up on... @theJBlounge Thank you! I love Klonoa and Nights!

A nice little package for the holidays, I guess. I don't know why people are complaining about a lack of backwards compatibility for the GameCube - clearly, this is aimed at people who couldn't care less about that feature. It looks pretty and comes with Mario, and that's enough for who it's intended for. Could probably use an extra Wii-Mote, I suppose.

EasyComeEasyGo

I have to say that Black Wii looks sexy but do you really need this? the Wii U is just around the corner, if you have a Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you cannot use the Gamecube controller on the Black Wii, and I anybody can find a used Wii for cheap that has the Backward compatibility. I'm only saying that there are better option if you want to get a Wii for the first time and there really is no differences from the Wii and the new Black Wii.

This would make sense if the price were lower....They should have sold it at like $119.99 or something.... It kind of makes sense to take out the gamecube since the Wii has most likely already absorbed the gamecube owners plus anybody buying it now (mostly the casuals) won't even know or care for gamecube.

Black humor joke!! No GC support anymore and BIG N sweet talks you with CD and Mario nostalgia!? Plz..! I'm happy with the white one although is getting dust in my shelf.

I have to say...why would anybody even want this? Considering how many wii's have already been sold then there is no reason for anyone to want to purchase a wii that hasn't already done so by now, anyone who hasn't purchased a wii after 5 years probably isn't too interested to begin with..not to mention the fact that this is basically taking away more than it is giving (and who really cares about horizontal gaming more than gamecube compatible?) and is rather crudely teasing those who are putting cash up for the wii-u with yet another exclusive cd. I think letting wii rest with Skyward Sword,Kirby wii,and a couple 3rd party titles should be enough of a good end for the wii,I personally am not overjoyed to see the end-of-life span of wii milked like this.

The Wii is already towards the end of it's product life cycle. To make a new offering at all seems strange to me. To make an offering that has fewer features than the original (No Gamecube compaibility) is down right dumb. Fewer features for the same price? Nintendo has really lost its way.

I want to see the Wii sales figures for this year... Everyone bought one initially - but then a lot sold them. I'd be surprised if they're even selling any more? I'm not hating by the way as I love Nintendo, I just feel the new bundles are a waste of time..

Um,no Gamecube functionality? Glad I already have my Wii! My next home console purchase is likely to be the Wii U.

One of the positives of already owning a GCN is that I already had different compilations of older games (Sonic, Mega Man, etc.) so I don't have to keep buying them on VC, PSN, or XBLA. Too bad BC is being taken out this late in the console's life cycle (even though I'm sure consumers can still find the original Wii easily) and I'm willing to bet that the Wii U will end up having GCN games in the VC. EDIT: Actually someone from NOA confirmed that GCN games would be on the Wii U VC. Go figure.

The nice thing about the Wii was that I don't need to waste the extra space that I don't have keeping my Gamecube out for whne I occasionally wanna play a Gamecube game. Nintendo's been really disappointing lately, and the Wii U may be the first Nintendo console that I don't buy.

theJBlounge
theJBlounge

I'm disappointed it's still $150. I would like to get a Wii at some point to play Mario Galaxy 1-2, the Metroid Prime series (I gave up on MP1 too quickly), Paper Mario Wii. There are also some obscure games like Klonoa and Nights 2.

Freezezzy

The old Wii features a horizontal orientation, too. Seriously? Did Nintendo learn nothing from Sony when they removed BC from the PS3? People are still complaining about it to this day, yet Nintendo decides to do the same thing to the Wii anyway. Where's the logic in this? With this new change, I have to wonder: how would the Wii have fared if it never had BC at all? Is the Wii's library really strong enough to sustain it, or did the extensive GameCube library have something to do with its continued success? I guess it's pointless to ask such questions now that the deed has been done.

Shinobi120

@blackace: I agree. I don't see the point in taking away BC for Gamecube when the upcoming Wii U doesn't have BC for GC games, either. You might as well buy a used Gamecube & save enough money to buy a Wii U (in which there are some people like myself that doesn't own a Wii yet).

nintendoboy16

There's a plus side, there will be a lot of used Wii's with Gamecube support (if you know where to look), and will more than there will be used PS3's with PS2 support.

ROFL They removed some features. And tries to present working horizontally as the new replacement feature. Which is... total BS! I was so confused from reading this article because I already use my Wii horizontally...

Save your money. You can get a Wii with controllers for $50 or under.

tmorri603

I feel that they should have lowered the price to $99. One reason is that the system has very few games that is going to come out the rest of this year and into next year. You have very little to look forward to. Also, everybody knows (or should know) that the Wii U will be out next year. Hello, you lower the price of old hardward to make room for new hardware. I don't see this working.

Taking away GameCube support means lower cost to manufacture? Where's the savings then? New horizontal orientation don't mean anything as I'm currently doing that with my Wii anyway. Last ditch effort by Nintendo to milk the Wii one last time.

doidasso

Nintendo can`t be serious with that. why the hell would someone buy this "Horizontal" bundle with less features? At least the 3DS is good.
