Black Panther Director "Obsessed" With the Character and Story, Will Be His "Most Personal" Film Yet

Creed director Ryan Coogler is known for his films that deal with the emotions and decisions his characters have to make, but you might be surprised to hear that Coogler believes his Black Panther film will be his "most personal movie to date."

In an interview with Fast Company, Coogler revealed that he's "obsessed with [Black Panther] and this story," and although it will be his most personal film, it will "still fit into the overall narrative that [Marvel is] establishing."

"I grew up as a comic book fan, and the same things used to happen in the comic books," Coogler explained. "You'd have Wolverine's books, and they'd be so much darker and more brutal than the X-Men books, but they'd still fit in when you open the pages of the X-Men book. It's new to movies, but it's not new to storytelling."

Coogler also talked about the obstacles that he faces as a director. He says he looks at challenges as blessings and mentioned his previous work on Fruitvale Station, which was a movie he wasn't sure he'd even be able to finish, let alone have it shown at Sundance and in theaters.

"With each step, it's a huge victory, but the finish line was getting it out to the world. To work on a movie where before you're hired, you know it's going to go out to the world is really, really cool," Coogler said. "It's daunting, and it’s intense, but Creed was the first time I worked on a movie I knew would come out, so with this, it's actually something that I'm looking forward to.

Coogler seems to have a great cast to work with on Black Panther. Captain America: Civil War directors Anthony and Joe Russo called Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman "remarkable." Additionally, there are reports that Oscar-winning actor Lupita Nyong'o will play the love interest, while Creed star Michael B. Jordan will portray the villain.
