Black Ops First Strike DLC crushes XBL

Xbox Live Update: First volley of add-on content for latest Call of Duty hits marketplace; Fight Night Champion demo now available; Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 hits Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow; Dark Void added to Games on Demand.

It's a busy week on Xbox Live, as the first batch of post release content for Activision megablockbuster Call of Duty: Black Ops is available alongside a demo for EA Sports' first M-rated Fight Night title, as well as the latest Bionic Commando title on XBLA.

First out of the gate this week is the First Strike ($15) downloadable content for Call of Duty: Black Ops. The content packs in four new multiplayer environments ranging in locale from the Berlin Wall in Germany to a North American hockey rink. The add-on also bundles one environment for the game's zombie mode dubbed Ascension.

Players can fight with guns, instead of fists, in the hockey rink in Black Ops' DLC.

Gamers who prefer hand-to-hand combat can now download a demo for EA Sports' Fight Night Champion. The first M-rated title in the franchise's history, the demo for Champion lets players fight as Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Manny Pacquiao, and Miguel Cotto in three-round fights. The demo also includes online play, but only for the next two weeks. The game itself is due out on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 1.

Arriving on the Xbox Live Arcade download space tomorrow will be Capcom's Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 ($15). The title is a direct sequel to 2008's well-received reboot of Capcom's 8-bit platforming franchise. The game picks back up with Spencer, who this time is sent after General Sabio. To thwart Sabio's technologically empowered attack on humanity, Spencer will again make use of the grappling hook affixed to his arm.

Switching to the Games on Demand hub, Microsoft added Capcom's Dark Void ($20) to the download space today. The action adventure game thrusts players into a world bustling with a hostile alien race known as The Watchers, where players will fight both in midair and on the ground.

These COD vs BF arguments are nonsense; where is it written in gaming law that you cannot enjoy both?

pakcerfan you fail because not only does CoD have terrible shooting mechanics and is a garbage game...but you are also a packers fan

@pakcerfan, not everyone who disagrees with you is whiner and crybaby and gets owned. who cares if CoD continues to be a success? I don't care. even Paris Hilton has fans. there is no surprise CoD does. BFBC2 is not free from faults. you get the base spawn kills, the parachute spawn killing..etc, but BFBC2 has some sense of struggle and teamwork. CoD? teamwork? almost none. just run and shoot or camp and shoot. and then the random spawn glitches. no vehicles and small maps and less destructive environment. and no, I get owned on BFBC more than I get owned on CoD..

Gamespot, you need to stop with the idiotic attempts at word-play in the headline of every news story: the headline suggests that the release of the First Strike DLC brought XBL to a halt due to demand, but no it's just a really lame pun that makes no sense.

Oh, and for the Battlefield fans. I was in your ranks earlier this year. I hated (HATED) MW2. So, I decided to put 2 days (48 hours) into Battlefield MP. I did enjoy it, but please, it is not COD. The shooting mechanics of COD are infinitely better than Battlefield (as are the graphics). I do wish Black Ops had larger maps like WAW (for sniping), but that's a small complaint. Again, you probably enjoy Battlefield because you're not getting owned as much as you do in COD.

Would you whiners pleeeaaassseee stop crying???? Ohhh, I'm not buying it, it costs too much, black ops sucks, etc. etc. etc. As of last night, there were over 1 million people on live playing black ops. My assumption is this... all of you people crying about the game (and how bad it is, how bad treyarch is, whatever) just flat out SUCK at it. You get owned at every turn and then want to blame your poor play on how bad the game is. Get over it! I've played it on PS3 and XBOX and like it on both. $15 for hours of gameplay is actually a very good investment.

Who is still playing Camper of Duty? let alone pay $15 to get few maps. when you can buy BFBC2 and play a fun game except when you get base spawn killed.

Vietnam expansion is by far the best option. Please go download it instead of this heap of poo poo. Pretty please! I'm, supporting EA all the way just because I want to see the COD franchise blown into smithereens.

Yet another rip-off from activision. I loved the free dlc for AC brotherhood and after the whole DRM thing with ubisoft I have more faith in them as publishers. But with BLOPS coming out broken on the ps3 and bug ridden on both consoles and pc, they should have given this map pack for f**king free. Especially when they have tried to patch it twice on the ps3 and failed. Failed so much that about 9 people on my ps3 friends list traded it in for LBP2, including me.

I could care less for the MP maps, I just want the new zombie map

I spent my ten UK pounds on the First Strike Pack and the Ascension Zombie map is sure worth the price on its own. It can be played offline and the map itself is huge and much more open with lots to see and do. My favourite moment is the floating elevator pod. Oh and those lil zombie monkeys are funny.

$15, what a joke. In the time it took Activision to release this ripoff DLC Ubisoft managed to release 2 Multiplayer DLC packs for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood with new maps and game modes, and they were FREE.

@ amaan4ever, you can't judge unless you own the game and have downloaded the map pack. Basically what you've done is notice a news bulletin about a game you don't like, and decided to let everyone know that you don't think the game is very good. You offered nothing constructive on the subject. @ Jurassic85, it is a good point you raise, but if you play Black Ops a lot (as well as the brilliant Nazi Zombies), then you'd understand that it is worth the MS points :) @ wetcardboard, in what way is Halo: Reach 'not nearly as flawed' as Black Ops? When I went online, I was booted for playing unfairly. Apparently I kept quitting games. Not true. I was in games with large parties that left, automatically closing the lobby. I got a bad 'rep' and found it hard to join games. And Halo is stupid easy.

Maps used to be free, now they are charging for it. But I won't complain too much, I will just avoid the ones that I feel are rip-offs.

Jurassic85

Price aside, one issue that someone raised is that this divides the Black Ops community. Those who don't have the new maps can't always play with those that do because when everyone votes "Random" if the map that is "randomly" chosen is one of the new maps, those who haven't bought them are screwed. As I said in a thread earlier today, if they are going to charge 1/4 of the game price for these maps, it should increase play time by 1/4. I don't feel that 4 new maps and a zombie level does that.

amaan4ever

why people why waste your hard earned money on these maps. I feel bad for the parents that actually go through the pain of buying this trash for their kids

only a few people on my FL still play this game, iv gotten bored of call of duty in gernal but i find my self playin cod 4 and even WaW sometimes because if fun, black ops if full of try hards and the kind of people that made fun of gamers a few years ago, some guy i knew at school was on the attack everytime he heard the words video game, now when black ops came out he was 3rd presteige in 2 days

Scatilicious

I've paid for it. 1200 MS points is steep, but I still think charging is reasonable, as much as everyone hates to hear it. Maybe 800 points is more the price they should be charging. It's a FAR better quality map pack than MW2, and the sheer amount of game time Blops gets is definitely worth it for me. No one does anything for free. They've clearly spent a lot of time and manpower developing these maps, and in the business world 'time = money'. So I don't mind helping fund the games industry if they provide quality DLC. Not regurgitated crap *stares at Infinity Ward*.

sorry, was including gas and a bag of Twizzlers. lemme try this: 2 pints of good beer at a bar, with tip and tax = 15 bucks. since i drink 6 pints a day, this math is easy! ;-)

Daian
Daian

@ferntfactor 1/4 of a full priced game for just a handful of maps? how is that reasonable? PS : U pay 15$ for a movie ticket? it's less than half of that here...

ferntfactor
ferntfactor

ps: 20 million in sales does not = 1 billion in profit for the game makers. however, it would be a nice gesture to give the loyal buyers a free map, like they did with "Makin Day" in WAW.

ferntfactor
ferntfactor

15 bucks? uh, lemme look... should have that in change in the couch cushions. seems fair considering the work put into it from programming through to marketing. will get many nights of fun out of this, or could go to one 90 minute movie. should have combined "hockey rink" with an NHL 2011 mini game though. just sayin...

D1zzyCriminal
D1zzyCriminal

Map packs should be free! Especially when the game has sold 20 million copies and racked up 1 billion dollars PROFIT! Activision should be thanking it's customers by blessing them with content for their best selling games, not milking them further. I'm not paying that price for it that's for sure.

"Compared to Bungie's $10 for 3 maps on Halo, this is golden." Yeah but Halo: Reach is not nearly as flawed as Black Ops, and none of that money is going to Activision. Just to spite Activision I'd probably pay twice as much for any Halo or Gears related DLC.

Wickerstunna
Wickerstunna

It is called INFLATION guys. Do not complain, just don't support it. Complaining about 15 dollars makes you look petty. The DLC for Black Ops is solid forgetting the price, and it is in my opinion the best DLC for any COD game released yet. And anyone who is saying "Infinity Ward has some work to do if they want to catch Treyarch." You are obviously not keeping up with current gaming events. Sledgehammer, and Raven are collaborating with the remnants of Infinity Ward on the new MW. MW2 is now being maintained by Treyarch, and eventually Infinity Ward will completely disband and be integrated into either Treyarch or Sledgehammer.

Kind of pricey, I will wait to see when it comes out on PS3, since I don't have XBox. They could have added a few weapons and ancillary items as well. Either way, I will be a wary buyer.

-Vietnam Expansion(New maps, new weapons, new vehicles, new music, new character models)-$15 -First Strike(4 maps, 1 zombie map)-$15 You guys must have no brain to figure out which one is more worth it.

Ok, I do think Xbox should have gotten the DLC first for the mandatory pay-to-play online. BUT, for NO other reason, the fanboy below me should just marry his Xbox for what he is saying. The DLC is $15, better than the MW2 DLC's combined, and includes 4 interactive online maps and a sick zombie map. BFBC2 Vietnam is very good and worth the price, but I still will get this DLC for my PS3 and I fully regret buying the map pack 2 for MW2.

i got it yesterday... It's pretty awesome all maps! But that 1200p for it is a little over the top. Black Ops is just so damn good! Infinity ward has alot of work to do if they want to compete with Treyarch Would of been the best COD game, but it was missing Co op campaign and any other real co op.WAW just gave that little bit extra... But for Competitive online Black ops is king!

@Sk8rlink Hey bro I have vietnam DLC and have all achievements for BFBC1, 2, 1943 and Vietnam sooo. Let me tell you a little bit about CHOKE points in Vietnam. Yes it is good but man players cannot even join after a certain time has passed after the match begins. I am by far a BF fan but dude Vietnam is flawed big time and not as good as 1943. This DLC for a COD game is good, nuff said!
