Black 3DS XL launching August 11

New version of handheld gaming system to arrive in North America next month alongside Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

Nintendo will release a black 3DS XL on August 11 in North America, the company announced today. The new version will join currently available options, including blue, red, and pink.

No mention was made of a release in Europe or other regions.

The black 3DS XL will arrive on the same day in North America as 3DS game Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. The role-playing game arrived in Europe earlier this month.

The new 3D XL color option was first revealed via a Canadian retailer leak earlier this month.

I prefer the regular sized black one for some reason :S, tried both out.

I could swear there was a black one available when I got my blue XL, just like the launch of the original 3DS. I do have a terrible memory, though.

@tightwad34 Maybe you were thinking the DS?  I got my XL a little after they first came out and a black wasn't available, I know cuz that's the color I wanted lol.

@devild0ogwhite @tightwad34 No I'm thinking of the 3DS, I never had an original DS. But like I said my memory is pretty bad so I try no to use it, LOL. It looks like everyone else is saying pretty much what you are so I will go by that.

Damn it, and I just bought the blue one too cause they didn't have black. I don't get why they don't just come out with all the colors at launch.

I love my 3DS, but when I get some money coming in I'd love to get a 3DSXL.  It would just work so much better with my hands.

I suppose then have to do something....after all the Wii U is tanking bigtime.

For those who own both a 3DS and a 3DS XL, do you feel that it's worth it to buy a 3DS XL for a current 3DS owner like myself? The two things I'm most concerned with are screen pixelation and portability. Does the resolution look noticeably worse than the smaller screen?

@Meesho Dude, just go to a Gamestop or Best Buy or something.  They usually have the XL up for demos rather than the normal version of the system.  That way you can not only see it, but try it out and everything.  As for what I've heard about the screen, they're both the same resolution, but it depends entirely on the game as to how it looks.  Some of the newer games are better optimized and look even nicer on the XL than some of the older games.

Either way, I just want to get the XL because I'm an adult and I find the XL much more comfy for my hands than my regular 3DS.  But it's up to each person as to whether they feel it would be worth it.  I think it would be for me to work better in my hands, plus the much larger screen would work out great, but some people don't think the jump from 3DS to 3DSXL is worth it.  Just check one out at a shop and you'll know.

@Meesho I have both, and the resolution doesn't look worse. I thought it would, but the screen actually looks much nicer. It's brighter and sharper looking.

@charliezard @Meesho Hmm that's interesting. I'm certainly leaning toward buying one. I guess I'll check out the demo in stores as well. Thanks :)!

@Meesho of course!!! I just upgraded from the original 3ds to the XL and it's worth it. After I played on mine my niece wanted me to download a demo for her on her original pink 3ds and my hands felt like a giant. The screen is beautiful. My hands don't do the "claw" while holding the XL. To sum it all up. YES

@lawliet1277 @Meesho How do you feel about the screen resolution? Do the graphics seem more pixelated on the larger screen? Also some people mentioned the colors not being as bright/vibrant on the xl, what do you think?

lawliet1277

@Meesho @lawliet1277  I don't find any change with the screen resolution. Nor with the colors. I am now currently replaying Zelda OoT and It looks SO much better!

Look everybody, it's a new color! Hurry! Buy Buy Buy! Don't add another stick, make those fools pay for it themselves. Just change the color and keep that boat a'float.

You're a joke Nintendo.

@david60639blah blah blah.  like really you think every single gamer already own a 3ds? I am looking forward to buying a 3ds and would definitely prefer black over red blue and pink.

if there's a joke it's your comment because you sound like a whining fool.

@troll_eat_troll @david60639 You buy a console based on color?

They've had plenty of time to implement hardware improvements the community has been clamoring for yet they instead focus on appealing to people who care more for the pigmentation of a plastic shell than sensible improvements.

You're only weighing them down.

@david60639 @troll_eat_troll You clearly have no idea how the world works. Hardware improvement? Adding another thumbstick? Really? That would isolate anyone with an older version of the 3DS, splitting the market and probably tanking the whole system.

Really? You actually suggested that?

Big deal...where is the second stick. Thats what I a waiting for.

Looks nice, black is always stylish, I still love my red one though.

Great! im thinking of getting one now that the new Pokemon games are coming out. I'm an adult gamer but I have been playing the main Pokemon games since Red and Blue came out but for the one looking for more adult games I guess Fire Emblem is pretty good. But do keep in mind this system is more family directed, if you need blood and M rated content on your games well the Vita is more up your alley.

As an adult gamer who mostly enjoys well thought-out and mature storylines; is there a reason to buy a 3DS? last nintendo handheld I owned was the original gameboy.

@fatee I'd actually like to know the same thing.  I did enjoy many games on the DS, does the 3ds have its own bunch of great games?

@Samslayer @fatee

I am also an adult gamer.  I really try to be open minded about new games.  My latest attempt was Luigi's Mansion... It is a very well made game but honestly I couldnt get through more than a couple hours of it because its just so incredibly skewed toward kids.  I would say sit it out honestly or pick one up used...

Shin Megami Tensei IV just came out, a challenging and deep JRPG. There's also games like Project X Zone, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, Code of Princess, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. Even Kid Icarus: Uprising, despite its seemingly childlike appeal, has a lot of humor adults would enjoy and also very challenging. But when it comes to well thought and mature storylines, Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward easily stands as the best story in videogames I've ever experienced (but you also have to play the first game Nine Doors, Nine Hours, Nine Persons for the DS).

Although if you're looking for grand epic scale games, then handhelds really aren't the place to go.

@fatee Worth it just for Fire Emblem: Awakening imo, i also got it for the isometric Zelda titles, you can get a second hand normal sized 3DS for about £80 - £90 now, so not too much of an investment compared to the XL.
